Attempt at a protection build (yes, I've just watched debo's vids). This is the furthest I've ever got with one. Getting seriously messed up by those Krem Rs and anything that breathes. Only found one forge >2 since the opening one which is kind of annoying.

Been using the sword and kite shield except when needing Glend for serpents, but just subdued a deathblade so wondering whether that should be my primary approach.

Also just added the =Damage. Not sure whether the =Dex gives this build more benefits than the =Protection (1d2).

And having just survived an epic battle against a Krem (or two), a whole army of cat warriors, Tevildo and his partner and an emerald serpent (thank goodness for Herbs of Rage!) and then followed up by troll guards, I have a whole pile of xp to invest.

Suggestions please.......?

Decided to pump will and take the point of Con. Made the FeanorianBrightness at a 2 charge enchanted forge. Still no 3 charge forges...

Deathblade didn't seem great, but found Dagmor, so have discarded the former. Longsword still seems better in the main for now though.

Decided =Dex better then =Protection. In desperate need of rFire. Hard to avoid fire breathers with no stealth!

Have built another pool of xp, so thoughts still welcome.

Finally stood on a four charge forge! I found an enchanted one earlier but was pursued by the unique troll and friends, an ancient serpent and a young fire dragon, so had to leg it!

So what to make...

Weaponsmithing gloves of course!

Just noticed in the notes that the Elfbane died - the ancient serpent or the dragon must have got him with splashback!

Ran out of _Revelations, so had to make something to help in combat rather than an extra smithing hammer incase I don't see any for a while (if at all). Have I got enough will to not need FA now I have changed boots?

I would have guessed the ring of protection slightly better, but hard to be certain.

I'd think Song might be a good investment for you, as there are several you might make use of. The main two I have in mind are Staying and Sharpness, which you could reach via Slaying or, perhaps more usefully, Aule and the Trees.

Lucky to find _Recharging followed by another _Revelations. Made my other Hammer and now stood on another enchanted 3 charge forge in my smithing kit.

Ah, had the page open from earlier and crossed with your last four comments.

You have a good amount of Will, and crucially enough health that you can cope with failing a save now and again.

By the way, do you know you're still using damaged gloves?

On 4.8.2012 15:20 Psi wrote:
Not any more...!

Still not sure where I am going with my final build for the throne room yet though. I'm sure I should be taking crowd fighting and various melee options etc and maybe critical resistance. I've never used exchange places but I guess Morgoth will show up early and I may need something like that?

On 4.8.2012 15:35 Psi wrote:
Now on presumably my last forge - how many turns is it before I am forced down?

If this is the last then it is time to make a weapon, otherwise a nice shield or cloak...

On 4.8.2012 15:42 debo wrote:
You've made it as far as I ever have. The build I copied from elliptic involved taking less evasion, though -- just enough to buy Heavy Armor Use. It's neat to see how few abilities you've taken overall.

The only melee character I ever played in the throne room basically dashed for a corner and dug a tunnel a-la Vanilla so that monsters could only reach me one at a time. That was when I thought I could kil V. Turns out that I was wrong :)

On 4.8.2012 16:04 Patashu wrote:
You are never 'forced' down - the game just checks your mindepth whenever you take a staircase. So, reset 950' every time it's mostly scrounged, and once just before it rolls over to 1000' (I forget the formula but you could source dive to find out)

On 4.8.2012 16:08 Psi wrote:
Well that surprised me! I was just killing stuff in the NW corner when Morgy appeared. I backed up a couple of steps and buffed up and then just stood and traded blows with him. Needed one !Miruvor but with my !Con buffing my HP to 178 it was a bit too much for him. As often I forgot to start singing sharpness. Oops.

First time I've killed him with a sword and shield fighter. Enjoyed that!

On 4.8.2012 16:10 Psi wrote:
@Patashu - Thanks for the response - I'm aware of the mechanics but just wondered what turn the clock moves over on. As I suspected it happened whilst I was forging my sword.

On 4.8.2012 16:12 Psi wrote:
Just noticed that Morgoth's first attack against me caused an earthquake that actually sealed us both in the NW corner on our own! Explains why nothing else joined in the fight!

On 4.8.2012 16:44 Psi wrote:
The ascent was easy - I took majesty and a lot of things just legged it! I took Elbereth ready for the ascent but didn't need it.

The gates were MAD! I've never really stuck around before, but I soon found myself surrounded by Troll Guards, Ancient serpents and of course Carcharoth. I had a couple of herbs of rage, so just went for it. I ended up quaffing a few !Miruvor, but it was quite a laugh.

I took cruel blow on the gloves as I thought that would be good against Morgoth and Dragons - I think I only saw it trigger on a Nameless thing! Waste of time that! My will wasn't high enough to prevent a few Ds giving me fear and one confusing me too.

On 4.8.2012 16:53 Psi wrote:
I suppose if I unequipped the shield then cruel blow would have come into play because of subtlety, however that was against the premise of this build.
