Third time this character has died in the exact same situation. I make it all the way down, scum for a bit, then get killed by that same thing. Anyway, I don't kill monster anymore. That just gets me into trouble when I get to confident.

Ugh, that comment above is ugly. What I was trying to say is that I keep getting kill by these Rauko whose name begins with "Gw". They make this darkness around themselves, and I never see them in dark rooms, where they seem to hang out.

My skill aren't showing again, but I took Disguise and Vanish within the first few turns, then Keen Senses around 200 ft. After that, I needed curse breaking to remove a Lantern of Shadow at about 400 ft. Song of Silence, Song of Lorien, and Unwavering Voice were all taken between 700-800 ft. Finally, I got Lore Keeper about 50 turns before dying, and was well on my way to Lore-master.

Hm, I've never had I problem with them on these type of chars, with listen I think you can tell where they are most or all of the time.

My skill progression is to get sprinting after vanish, and then all the perception stuff before song, as I don't find song useful before the throne room.

Since the darkness Rs have unlight radius 3, you need a light of radius 4 to see them (3 in lit rooms or with inner sight, 2 with both). Maybe learn Song of the Trees?

Yeah, Trees would have given you a total light radius of 5, enough to see most dark monsters in the game, if not all. I can't see how many songs you had learned, though, so I guess it may not have been feasible. Alternatively, Listen would also have been very helpful. Noldor of Finarfin can get Listen very easily; since you're not doing much smithing maybe you can try that instead of Feanor?

I never thought to use the Finarfin house, that would make sense, considering the amount of perception skills I end up taking.

I rarely have a big light radius, though this particular character had 3. That was very helpful, actually. There was a lantern of brightness on this floor, but I went the wrong way in the very first room, and never saw it.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I think I'm getting real close to my first win, just need to survive a bit better at the bottom.

Yes, light radius is very important in Sil, and it sounds like you need more light. Keen Senses, Listen, and Inner Light don't directly increase your light radius but would all help you to spot the Gwathraukar (and similar monsters).
