Another attempt at a non-Noldor win. Taking this one a little more slowly... have had pretty good luck finding forges so far, and just need a few more for smithing to start giving me great stuff.

Things continue to go well, with Anglachel and another couple of forges. Currently I'm sitting on one wondering whether to make another smithing hammer or some stat boost gear. Oh, also there are some mithril weapons lying around the level... I wonder whether it is worth grabbing them. An artefact Feanorian lamp could be interesting...

On 28.6.2012 20:01 debo wrote:
Just an FYI, although you likely know already -- a Mithril Longsword {special} can be an indication that you've found Ringil :)

Having a sharp weapon at that depth is always a huge boon, although I prefer to avoid danger-items past 600' or so. Running into packs of cat assassins is a huge pain!

I'm going to have to try this combination of incredibly low evasion + crit resistance. I've always avoided low evasion in the past because all it takes is one "it hits you!!!" to kill an unlucky character, but I'd never even realized that crit resist was there as a hedge!

On 28.6.2012 20:27 elliptic wrote:
The mithril weapons were identified thanks to the Lore-Master helmet I forged, so not Ringil unfortunately.

Does danger do anything except make monsters spawn as if they were 50' deeper?

I've actually yet to have any serious trouble with cat assassins on any of my characters... they are a little annoying, but they don't deal a huge amount of damage and they die fairly easily after being cornered in a room.

Yeah, I've definitely had the most success with protection-based characters so far. My evasion-focused characters tend to have problems with high-accuracy melee threats like wargs and cat warriors, and I haven't done well with stealth at all. The critical resistance is pretty much necessary against cat warriors, though... one time I dived to cat depth without getting it and it was ugly.

About to enter 1000' and feeling very confident. I might try to kill Morgoth in a fair fight (i.e. no knockback, no disabling).

Holy forges! And holy rings of accuracy!!

How the hell do you recover from all that post-forge stat draining??

On 29.6.2012 00:00 elliptic wrote:
Potions of , mainly, since I didn't find many herbs of restoration until after all the forging. This meant "wasting" a lot of potions of constitution, but clearing 950' a few times at the end replenished my supplies.

And yes, I'm very happy with those rings. :P They didn't cost any stats to make, and one forge gave me both of them along with the Feanorian Lamp of True Sight.

On 29.6.2012 01:31 elliptic wrote:
The character had a very easy time meleeing Morgoth down (213 HP with !Con meant I only had to heal a couple of times), but then it crashed on the way up just like http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=13146 did. I learned from that experience though and did make a backup save before doing 1000' on this character, so hopefully I can replay things.

No crash this time. :)

213 HP!!! Holy moly! That's a record in the books of Sil, for sure!

By the way, what's up with the :( at 450ft, during your ascent?

The :( was something burning my last staff of revelations... the character was in zero danger, but it meant another five minutes spent mashing keys looking for stairs.

This char made gloves of forging, mail corslet of protection, and two rings of +2 accuracy at 100'. When not taking Jeweller so early, I make round shield of deflection and/or boots of speed instead of the rings.

Really? All the character did was start with 5 Con, forge +4 Con, take the +1 Con ability, and drink a potion. It wouldn't have been that hard to get higher, but this seemed like enough. :) With the exponential HP growth it was pretty ridiculous though... what about capping all stats at 10 or so?

On 1.7.2012 04:22 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
I'm not sure if anyone had an extraordinary record on CON. Most of the previous winners focused and relied on getting really high Dex or Gra to win the game. Dex because it helps with Melee, Evasion, and Stealth. Gra because it helps with Smithing, Song, and Will.

On 1.7.2012 04:24 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
But hey, having an HP above 200 is definitely an accomplishment because so few people manage to get it this high, ever! :)
