My first really serious protection-based character. Things have been going pretty well, though I need to decide what to do with xp.

Nice! I would consider hardiness on the will tree if I were you. There's two more points of protection if you get your will bonus to 12 and the added will score will help your save vs. paralysis and other stuff. You already have a great score, and you're not even wearing the protection rings! I think I had 10-38 one time, I rarely got scratched.

That experience pool is crazy. I think Critical Resistance is the most important, followed by Hardiness.

If you get into long fights due to being very defensive (e.g. if you swap the accuracy rings for protection) then Concentration can help. Also, with high enough protection, you don't need much Con, which is useful.

I took the Hardiness/Critical Resistance advice and have been pretty happy with them... I'm less happy with Concentration though, and Focused Attack was probably just a mistake on my part.

I just forged my masterpiece, since I had an enchanted forge on 900'. I have a bit of time left to get more consumables/xp though, and I need to decide on a few more skills.

Hmmn... that was sort of a funny weight to make your shortsword. 2.0lb would have given you an extra damage side from strength, but maybe fewer criticals. On the other hand, putting it at 0.9lb would have made Rapid Attack a no-brainer, IMO, since you wouldn't be getting a damage penalty. What are the odds of you making it to 4 Str before the throne room? :)

Your protection is awesome, but crowd fighting might still be useful to you. Unwavering voice and mixed themes (or whatever it's called) might be good bets as well, since you don't have all that much Voice. Would be great to mix Staying and Este when things get nasty, which they will!

Also, where the heck did you get that protection ring?!?! Did you make it? I think we have a mini-Psi on our hands, here...

On 24.6.2012 07:23 debo wrote:
Why do you say focused attack was a mistake? If you already have blocking, that means you're getting the defense bonus and +6 to melee just for passing a turn... you're already perma-hasted, so it's not like you're losing much by hitting 'z' before every swing.

If you want to see more benefit out of it, put a few more points into perception!

This is a very powerful character now -- I'm impressed!

debo: Yeah, I wasn't sure about 2.0lb vs 1.0lb, and I might have done 0.9lb instead but I didn't have quite enough smithing for that. I do have three potions of strength and will likely find more before I have to go to 1000', so I might still consider rapid attack.

The protection ring was just lying around in a vault... I forget exactly what was guarding it, but I was happy to find it!

Hitting things an extra time seemed generally better than blocking+focused attack for this character, but maybe that will change now that I am perma-hasted... does that make waiting faster?

On 24.6.2012 16:58 debo wrote:
Yeah - you should be able to hit and then immediately block before a foe gets its turn.

On 24.6.2012 17:21 elliptic wrote:
debo: Wait, does that mean that haste also makes attacking faster? I was assuming all this time that being fast/slow just affected movement speed...

On 24.6.2012 17:23 elliptic wrote:
Heavy use of exchange positions made 1000' and the way up pretty easy. I started to try to kill Carcharoth, but he seemed dangerous enough (at least with lots of troll guards around) that I just ran for it.

On 24.6.2012 17:32 Scatha wrote:
Yes, it means you take all actions at three halves of normal speed. This is obviously very good. The mitigating factor is that you can never get faster than that; between Sprinting and Potions of Speed you'd normally be hosted for key moments anyway. But we still think it's a little under costed for Smithing, so making that corslet will be a bit harder in the next version.

Anyhow, good going, and I'm glad to see another protection character; I've always liked the archetype. I don't quite agree with half about neglecting Con: it's true that you can often get through fights without taking *any* damage, but some of the deep monsters have enough variance that you have to be able to absorb it sometimes (I think I've seen 4d21 from a dragon).

Good going. It's funny to think of a heavily protected to the eye-teeth character stabbing away with a short sword, but you sure made it work!
