This is the first time I've been to 1000' with a melee character and well I did pretty badly. My strategy was "have no strategy" and it ended as expected. Before that floor the only things that really did anything to me were vampires, but damn did they ruin me with stat drain (see ending str). Oh well, I feel as though I can get back there fairly soon...

Wow, fighting on with Str drained by 7 is fairly amazing. Anyhow well done on getting to the throne room.

There are a few strategies for dealing with vampires. Basically you need to break the chain somewhere:
- Don't let them attack (stealth/archery/fear)
- Don't let them hit (very high evasion, don't get surrounded)
- Don't let them damage (very high protection)
- Don't let them drain (high Will; sustains)

Sustains work pretty well for the first two types, but for the vampire lord, you need all four which is tough to achieve.

clouded: your melee score is quite incredible there with the song of slaying going, as is your constitution. I'm somewhat surprised you didn't win, even with the draining. That said, the throne room is pretty different to the rest of the game and it can be hard to know how to deal with it. For a character like this, I'd hole up in a corridor somewhere until the first wave of assault dies down. This is easier said than done though, as you don't want to be trapped when Morgoth arrives and you can't handle him. There are ways to deal with this, but they are tricky... Did you burn a charge of Revelations to map the throne room? That can be very helpful.

Oh man... with Delmereth and Angrist, this character was just screaming for high stealth and assassination :D

Scatha: Thanks.

half: I did map the level, but after that and buffing I had gotten surrounded and thought I could handle it with rage... But then Morgoth came to the party. It looks like the left side has a lot of nice corridors to use. I'm not sure how sound and whatnot works in this game, would Morgoth have come to me if I'd ran over there right away?

debo: Yes, perhaps I should have gotten some stealth, though I had somewhat set my stall out with heavy armour use, but exchange places might have saved or prolonged my life in this situation...

Is there anything else I could have done better building this character? At the end I was upping song for regen and sharpness, but I didn't manage to get them. I think it would have been good to get them much earlier, if I hadn't of found angrist serpents would have been much more trouble for me.

My only thought when seeing your character is rapid attack, or two weapon fighting. With your melee score reaching the stratosphere and a good strength, well, before you got drained of course, and Delmereth and Angrist as your main weapons which are both light. The -3 to hit wouldn't phase you, and the -3 to strength wouldn't provide any damage problems. You went the power charge knock back route making this an expensive proposition by endgame though, so I can see why you wouldn't want to plunk down a serious chunk of experience on it.

Crowd fighting would have been nice in this final situation (as would being somewhere like a corner where fewer than 5 enemies could attack).

Were the monsters attacking you when you entered the level, or was there a strange tension in the air?
