Well, I wasn't quite ready to post yet, but I've come across a bug with ironman play. This character forgot to use the 'O' options at creation, but once the game started, before doing anything else, I ticked on all the challenge options, as the game says I can do this. I haven't bothered trying any upstairs, of course, but upon seeing The Dagger of Nargil at around 700', on the ground, I realized something was wrong. I made a save of my character and indeed, I can go upstairs. So, I reloaded before doing so. I guess this challenge will have to be upon my honor, and I won't use the points gained from seeing the artifacts generated... though this is the first one I've seen. Not counting, of course, Glend, which I've mentioned elsewhere, that guaranteed artifact drops from uniques are occurring in ironman play.

Oh Silmaril, how I covet thee. Low supplies made whirlwind a necessity, but thankfully, my battleaxe carved out a silmaril with the song of sharpness. And, looky here, a cornucopia of revelations, and a recharging staff to boot. My adrenaline is pumping. I must.. slow... down, and think.

I'm extremely lucky to survive the throne room. I gambled my resources well. Only one con potion and one herb of rage. Pretty critical for boosting hp. Also, exchange places saved my life when I actually ran *toward* Morgoth when the entrance battle took a nasty turn with unrelenting horrors? the green H's, and fire raukar and other nasties. It took 4, or 5 agonizing swings to get the crown off, and 3 attempts, even with sharpness, to get the silmaril out. I didn't change out of my shield this go around, and managed the deed one-handed.

I'm thinking I should wear the Silmaril, put back on my long sword of raukar slaying, use revelations. How can I not have any alcohol in the house? I need a drink.

How can I not finish, knowing I'll have to go to work tomorrow, and ponder this all day. But, how can I finish without a drink. *sigh* I won't be able to sleep either.

Warning, wall of text ahead.

Wow, have I got a story to tell! Thanks, go to my wife, who simply had to sit next to me and keep me calm. I talked it all out through with her, which certainly saved this character's life. I shaved death many times! Without stairs to flee poor levels from, the escape became a seriously intense escape, with great plotting and planning and sheer luck, at times. Without all those revelations charges, and recharging, and finding another revelations staff, and a staff of foes, I would have been lost also. Wow, where to begin? The deep levels were actually safer, because of all the circuitous routes one could take. As the levels got smaller, and the escapes and possible paths tighter, encounters with Morgoth, and pretty much nil supplies, were deadly. The first major milestone was at 650', where with zilcho supplies and Morgoth a few squares away, I gambled *heavily* on purchasing detect traps/doors, the first time I've ever taken it, and took a point of perception. My last of the experience pool, hoping to get sprinting soon, but it wasn't to be. In the screenshot, pray, you'll see me clawing at the secret door that the mattock couldn't find. I get out in the nick of time. The next big hurdle was at 200ft, where in the screenshot you'll see I had some tough decisions to make on how to get out, with only 1 thing of healing and no speed. At 100ft, I had to draw Morgoth into a path, then turn and run all the way around a big block to make it to the exit... Pacman style. 50ft was a footrace, where I barely one by 2 squares. At the gates, Drauglin greets me, and starts to gnaw me alive. I fight him off, and he retreats. I eat my last healing and start singing slaying and carving things up. He comes back and I fight him off again, and later deal the deathblow. I start exchanging with all the Trolls and find a potion of Con!!!, and I finally meet up with my old FAangband pal, Carcharoth, who greets me with a 22 poison bite. I simply run, diagonally toward the exit, with him nipping at my heels the whole way. I'm bleeding, I'm poisoned, I'm dying, but I'm out. I'm gonna sit on a damn rock and uncork my orcish liquor and savor the moment for quite some time. That, was extremely intense, and will be one of my favorite rogueliking moments for all time.

Yeah, those gauntlets are nice! I think I usually find at least one pretty cool thing per game. My 2nd attempt found mithril armor and a mithril sword early, and my first character found galvorn armor at 250', which I think must be pretty doggone rare.

Awesome story, thanks for the write up.

Seriously impressive, too. Straight down and straight back up is so far from normal Sil play that I'm not sure how I'd start.

Thanks! With my normal characters, I usually skip a bit of the early levels and start repeating levels around the 800's. With this guy, I cleared as much of each level as possible. Since I make mass murderers, finding enough stuff, even without artifacts, doesn't seem to be a problem. I realize now my no abilities & ironman challenge would be nearly impossible the way I play. Perhaps in 1.03 I could cut a silmaril without sharpness, but I think I would need a mattock of belegost in place of swap position, and of course, lots of other things.

The RNG was benevolent, putting great staves right in my path. I had a revelations charge for all 21 levels I saw on the way up. (I hit two crumbling staircases). The crumbling staircases on the way out are very reminiscent of the 'mysterious force' in Nethack that pushes you down levels as you try to ascend with the amulet. I like it and am not arguing for removal, but, I got to wondering... is it a desired and purposeful behavior, or is it a holdover from putting in crumbling staircases to prevent overly abusive stairscumming behavior? In any case, there should be occasional crumbling down staircases on the ascent, if there aren't already, that plunge you down an extra level.

I don't think I've ever mentioned it, but having Morgoth chase you down throughout your entire ascent, is a master stroke of genius.

On 18.6.2012 18:37 Scatha wrote:
The crumbling staircases on the ascent was a side effect of the anti-scumming measure, but we figured it would probably be fun and we could always special-case it if it turned out to trigger too much on the way up. Hitting two seems fine to me.

I think if you wanted to do this without abilities you'd really hope to find some Boots of Speed, since I guess the escape is pretty awkward without any of Sprinting, Exchange Places and Vanish. An enchanted mattock would indeed help too. You could also try with artefacts but straight down and up without abilities. My feeling is that artefacts would help a little, but not that much.
