My second attempt at an all three challenges character with abilities. Apparently, an artistry build is quite powerful. This is the second time I felt like I was just steamrolling. My first character died to sheer dumb play... I strolled around a silent watcher until paralyzed, and a cat warrior killed me. Anyway, this guy is at 950' and the level indicates no decent treasure of *any* sort, and no uniques. I guess I'll make my way to the two unidentified staves and hope that one is revelations, and the other charging. Good thing I have a decent stockpile of stuff. I think I might have to bite the bullet and buy exchange position. I should probably also buy knockback, but I haven't had much luck in the way of weapons. Going two-hander loses a lot of protection, and even evasion too. Hmmm. I'm going to have to rest on this a while.

That is an awesome-looking character you have there. I love Artistry for allowing you a high protection or evasion score relatively early in the game. It looks like your character is ridiculous at both, though!

Cool. Any difficulties with the father of dragons?

Glaurung tranced me one time, but I buffed up so much that he wasn't too hard to kill, though he cost me a healing potion.

Wow, talk about learning a lesson the hard way. I got to the throne room and buffed up and mowed through everything without too much trouble. Took knockback and wielded the great axe to get the crown off, which fell pretty quickly. Enemies were dying left and right and everything was going great, I wasn't even worried. But... the... damn... Silmaril... would... not... come... out! It never occurred to me that this might be a problem, or would've kept 7,000xp handy for sharpness. I tried many times with 4d12 axe, and 5d10 mattock... no dice! I was burning through my reserves, and naturally one of those damn green H's popped up to annoy, and Morgoth was very crafty with his earthquakes, shifting me away from the crown, dumping me in pits and just generally being a nuisance. Apparently I let my Con buff lapse while I decided the best thing to do was buy strength, drink strength, and eat strength, to get to 8, so I could just simply drag the damn crown out. However, as soon as I hit 8, I got killed. Damn damn damn!!! Sigh. I really thought it was going to be cake. Lesson learned. I guess I should've realized quicker to drag the crown out. I loaded up my save before the throne room, dragged the crown out faster, and realized that, wow, it took me somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 attempts to get a silmaril out with the axe or mattock. I must've been extremely lucky to get a silmaril out with a mattock on my first attempt that one time. I usually have a sharp weapon at this point, but of course, no artifacts! Well, next time I will know better.

We're making the first Silmaril easier to get out for 1.0.3.

Yah! I wasn't complaining or anything, but, I simply never realized it had 4d20 protection until I reloaded this character and actually took a look. I had never really had a problem ever before, so I just assumed it was trivial, since I usually make damage mongers anyway. 4d20 averages out to what, about 42 or so... wow!

The nice thing about experiences like these it that it only took up maybe 5 hours, I think maybe less, I can't recall. Now, losing to Morgoth after piling up all your free time for weeks and weeks is soul-crushing. I could reasonably get another one of these up to Morgoth in an afternoon, so the sting didn't hurt too bad!

On 17.6.2012 15:41 half wrote:
Actually, it is even worse than 4d20, it is 20d4, which has an average of 50, and less variance. You need to do one hit point of damage. Then it goes on to have 25d4 and 30d4. For 1.0.3, we are leaving the last two values the same, but changing the first to 15d4 (average = 37.5), which is noticeably more possible. We are less bothered about making it so that you have to plan your character to be able to get Silmarils 2 and 3, but being able to get to the throne room and not cut the first one is pretty annoying. We want it to be hard, but for there to be a combination of gear and potions for 95% of first time throne room character which allows them to succeed within 20 tries.
