Unlike the last time I got to this depth, this character was able to survive quite happily against most critters, the only annoyance being the lack of forges after 100 feet. I found another one at 850 feet, guarded by Tevildo and his guard, a couple of Unmourned, a couple of fire demons, and a Spider of Gorogoth. Russandol killed the Spider and the cat guard, and had Tevildo down to three stars and fleeing before the bloody cat came back and started inflicting some serious damage (Russandol's last turn was eating a Herb of Healing - fat lot of good that did him against that attack).

With any of the cat uniques, you have to be 100% sure that you can kill them if you're going to wake them up... as you witnessed yourself, it's pretty much impossible to run from them without getting cuisinarted, even with Vanish :)

They have crap for protection but high evasion, so Orcrist and the shield of deflection may have been a better choice here. Quaffing !Dex and !Quick would have been a good idea too.

Did you try using your staff of slumber? Your will is reasonably good. I don't think Tevildo is immune to it, nor do I think he has much Will.

Your skills also look somewhat confused... you started with power-oriented abilities and then switched to stealthy ones later -- why on earth did you take assassination if you already have charge? :)

Nice work! Once you get comfortable between 600'-900', a win is almost inevitable :D

PS as a total side note, I dream of one day finding Burkfelek with a 7 Str character w/ Charge... maybe two rings of damage +2... 12d11, anybody? :D

Oh yes, now you're talking my language! My charge!!!! character had just that... very gratifying. Also, my Strongmad character http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=12706 had quite a few 10d20 charges against old Morgoth. I lost to sloppy play, but nearly my first V-killer without charge-opportunist.

You were very unlucky to be killed in one blow after the herb -- but part of the game is hedging against bad luck. I'd echo the suggestion of using potions for buffs. There's a trade off there: earlier in the fight is more effective, but you may not know whether you need them. Orcrist and the shield might also have helped against the cats (but no good against the unmourned).

Well, I was coincidentally looking at the Herb of Healing description and noticed that they only cure 25% of your health which was surprising and counter-intuitive. I've just changed this to 50% so that it is the same as potions of healing for 1.0.3.

Stair crumbling left me at 950 feet. Notwithstanding my Inner Light and decent Perception, some dark critter turned up and started beating me up, so I used a staff of earthquake to kill it. Problem was that I also blocked off all exits, and hadn't found a digger the entire game. Result: starvation, though a post-mortem look at the dungeon revealed that I had starved for hundreds of turns beside a secret door... which is just weird.

Oops. Ended up replacing the previous incarnation of this character (that'll teach me to not reuse character names...).
