My first attempt at a holy-lancer themed build. I used 2 pts in smithing + weaponmastery to make a glaive at the first forge. Am waiting on a second to make a 6.0lb halberd -- the melee penalty is a bit nasty to use one right off the bat.

I worked up to 10 melee and evasion before starting to put points in will. Just picked up Majesty now, and am curious to see how well it works for avoidance.

Not sure now if I should start investing in perception to get lore-master, or whether I should just keep pumping my 3 basic stats. There are a ton of useful-looking Will abilities that I haven't ever tried before!

6lb Halberd? Isn't it worth dropping the weight a little?

Will does have a lot of good abilities. Perception, too: Focused Attack is great with Polearm Mastery.

Have fun!

It's only a rough plan... I was thinking of 4 str as an eventual goal, but I guess I could keep it light and hope for a damage ring :)

As I suspected, I wasn't quite good enough playing an actual melee character at the midgame to make this poor girl viable.

I've never used Majesty before. It doesn't scale as well as Stealth or Elbereth for self-defense/avoidance -- if you invest slowly in either of those, you can usually sneak past/scare away monsters at your min depth pretty easily. Majesty requires a greater investment, and I'm not sure it will ever really pay for itself, to be honest.

I was surrounded near the end there, but I'd already been in 10+ similar situations just before. If I hadn't been so lucky with consumables, I would have been dead long before the situation seen here.

I need to think through this build a bit more. I really want the Will + Polearm thing to work, but I think I need to go either full melee + evasion first, or full melee + will. I think Knockback, in particular, would be a huge boon w/ Polearm Mastery -- but I need to test it out :)

Darnit, I completely forgot Charge as well! Haha I thought I'd bought it, but I guess not! Hmmn...

Knockback and Polearm Mastery work very well together, though they wouldn't help in situations like your final screenshot. Things like Zone of Control, Riposte, and Focused Attack could also be good with Polearm Mastery, as it means you get some advantage out of passing your turn. e.g. if you have an orc next to you and one a square away, you could pass instead of attacking. You will get a melee bonus in your attack (as the new orc closes in) and might also get a free attack on the other orc if it moves or misses by a lot. Charge is always pretty good and goes well with the heavy weapon, but doesn't directly work with Polearm Mastery at all.
