My best yet with the artifactless, ironman, no abilities... and a bit bewildered whether I should be using the Greatsword, the Battleaxe, or the Battleaxe with shield. At least I have the slaying rainbow covered. Heh, slay the rainbow. Um, yes, Nan did Indeed drop Glend. I couldn't help but to try it on *just in case* it was just a special -1, 3d6 Greatsword of Hador's house, or something like that. It was hard to leave it behind.

You might be better off with the 7.9 lb Greatsword. :)

Well, that's what I've been using, but at my wimpy 2 Strength the weight is pretty much a non-issue. This is what I'll be thinking about as I go to sleep tonight...

I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.I actually do the most damage with the battleaxe sans shield at 3d9, but the extra protection from a shield seems smart since my evasion isn't stratosphere level and 3d7 isn't shabby, but then if I simply killed things faster then why bother with a shield unless of course I'm not hitting as much at +15 as opposed to +17 which brings me back to the greatsword.

Heh, if you want to know what *really* happens, I tell my wife the weapons and average values and pros and cons of each -- she falls asleep very fast due to fail save vs. boredom, and I get out of bed and play more angband because now I'm into it and want to start playing again.

Well, that caught me by surprise! I either lost track of my hitpoints or it hit me harder than I thought it could. Treasures pointed out 3 or 4 healing potions and a ring of str +1 that would've pumped me to a satisfactory 3d8 damage output. I really wish I could've tangled with the deep spider and cold dragon that was guarding it... I'd be interested to see my success rate w/o freedom but with a modest will investment. Hmm, oh well. My best to date, and I didn't feel too out of place where I died. This build is pretty good. 2/4/5/3, with a 7/5/3/1 start with ev/me/pe/wi. Put a point in each starting with evasion until pe and wi reach a strong bonus.

They normally hit for 4d10 (when you have fire resistance), so the critical could have hit for up to 43 after armour, but 14 is more typical. Still, they're scary. Do you ever try to deal with them at a distance? (Spears or arrows)

Watch out for the Ururaukar! These guys hard *very* hard, if you don't have fire resistance. But, dealing with them RED Rs at a distance seems like a good idea.

On 2.5.2012 21:10 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
No, I guess they never really troubled me before. Usually, by the time I reach the fire raukars, they just die to the first hit and I've rarely every missed them. I guess one has never really lived long enough around me for me to notice their damage output.

I got to thinking about the disconnected stairs option. Since monsters will sometimes come down from the stairs you just used to create a nuisance, disconnected stairs is actually easier in a "straight down" challenge. Or, at least it seems that way to me. I think for my next try, (probably my 8th or 9th in reality), I'll turn disconnected off and see if there is any appreciable difference in difficulty.

I was in the 20's in hitpoints so oops, I'll know next time. I hate dying with consumables, and the rest of the level didn't look to bad, granted if I could save. vs. trance against the gorgoroth spiders and cold drake. I think they were gorgoroth, whatever those red ones are.
