Another dead elf. Trying to get one that can go past 400 ft. As usual, I got surrounded and died promptly.

Why were you pooling so much XP? At that stage of the game, small investments in different skill trees will make a big difference in survivability.

I'm not sure if your ability selections were dropped from this file, or you just opted not to take any... but if you're not taking any abilities, you really should reconsider :)

Actually, you clearly took some abilities b/c you were singing Elbereth... if you're going to rely on that to protect you in the early game, maybe put 1 less into Con and add more to Grace (and more XP in Song, too).

If you have the slightest feeling that you might get surrounded, sing Elbereth right away and dash for the nearest staircase :)

Right, the trick here may have been to start singing Elbereth a little earlier in the combat to give it a chance to kick in effectively. This is harder because it means you need to judge earlier when things might go wrong, but that's where some of the interest lies.

Good luck!

My abilities, which are not listed here for whatever reason, were charge, dodging, sprinting, disguise, Elbereth, and slaying.

I always try to get sprinting ASAP, but judging from what debo says, should I spread out my abilities a bit more? Take cheap skills from different trees?

My recommendation for starters:
Charge from Melee tree (5 skill points)
Dodging from Evasion tree (3 skill points)
Sprinting from Evasion tree (7 skill points)

This is *always* the combination I use. This works quite well, IMHO. You 'Charge' into enemies for big damage. 'Dodging' is needed for 'Sprinting.' 'Dodging' helps you to evade monsters when they hit back after you 'Charge' into them. Everyone knows why 'Sprinting' is so good. :)

The not showing abilities means that your 'notes file' isn't working. I've removed the 'notes file' for 1.0.3 so this will fix itself soon enough. (Don't worry, the notes functionality is still there, but no more pointless temporary file is generated for anyone).
