I decided to expand my horizons yesterday beyond Chengband and Dungeons of Dredmor, and I must say Sil definitely was a very sound choice :)

I lost four characters previous to this lady, with each character descending a bit deeper. Once I got enough Evasion though, things went smoothly enough, except for the few blasts of fire I took in the face trying to nab some loot or just get passed a corridor blocked by a s, S, d or D. Gosh darn those serpents. Tough as nails they are.

I had found Orcrist at 300' from Gorgol, and that was probably the real beginning of the end. Orcs and trolls fell like grain before a scythe with Orcrist, and Fingolfin some time later gave me more yummy protection along with a much needed boost in HP.

Tevildo was indirectly responsible for the previous character's death at 750', as I was being hotly chased by him (it?) along with a host of other nasties. Anyways, I got my revenge this time, and the reward was a fine shiny blade named Glamdring! By this point, my Evasion was already very strong, and Parry along with Glamdring added another +6 to Evasion. Glamdring was generally the main weapon from then on, with the occasional use of Saithnar. The differences between weapons and tactical weapon swapping really added a delightful depth to combat.

Before long, I found myself in V's throne room, and there was quite a banquet going on, what with orcs, trolls, spiders, raukar and vampires all invited. What I couldn't quite figure out was the method to tease a blessed Silmaril from from its hideous prison of iron. Maybe there was a stealthier way that would've been more fitting to my habit of sneakiness, but with a lack of other visible options, I just whacked the durn crown off of his head, and brazenly lopped off one of the divinely glowing gems off of it. Good thing I somehow found both Anglachel AND Anguirel just before hitting 1000', not that Saithnar wouldn't have served as well.

As this was my first actual endgame, I decided to play it safe, and leave the other two Silmarils to their imprisonment. At least I escaped with Carcharoth's hide as an additional souvenir from this adventure ;)

Now that I have a better feel of the mechanics and possible builds, though, you bet I'll be chasing after those other two Silmarils, and perhaps Morgy's head too! If I could only figure out how to REALLY damage him, but that'll come with time.

Peace out!

Congratulations. A win with your fifth character is pretty impressive!

Just carrying Anglachel around with you will have made things a bit harder for the throne room and the escape, too.

I'm amazed! Loremaster early is impressive too considering this is only your fifth try. Congrats.

Winning on the fifth try is really amazing. Do have fun playing other types of character, there is a lot of variety. The different races add a difficulty component, as well as biasing things towards certain builds, with the Sindar and Naugrim being noticeably harder than Noldor and Edain being very difficult.

That is amazing... I think I killed five characters before I even made it to 100' lol

Thanks for all the comments everyone :)

I think what made it easier for me was the very 2nd-ed AD&D-like mechanics such as a THAC0-like approach to Evasion. That, combined with the very detailed min-maxing from my days playing City of Heroes made it rather simple for me to decide on my chosen path of skill-ups.

Good gear also makes a difference, although in this case I could see that I probably could have succeeded without Orcrist so early--it would've just taken somewhat longer.
