I've been trying Snipers a lot lately, I just keep dieing because of the lack of damage (best shooter until now was a heavy xbow +9+9). So when Robin dropped his bow I jumped, that feeling was boosted by finding the ego crossbow. I'm still using Robin because of the stealth bonus.

My second dive in the Anti Melee Cave scored me the Twilight Robe (!) just lying in the ground and less than a minute later Jurt dropped Thorin. That was a lot of luck in a very short time, so I will die soon I fear... But having all resses is pretty nice and I don't need AC here. :) So first time I can actually use the Robe.

Ah...playing like a true sniper then :) All stealth, no AC. Good luck!

Well, my stealth still sucks with Superb, a lot of creeps wake up. And... I miss a *lot* of shots. Which is kinda annoying as you are charging for 5 turns before you shoot. So it's like you miss 6x in a row. Concentration should boost your to-hit too as you are concentrating to shoot (asleep) monsters 1 square away from you. :)

Just did BD for the two randarts, both are not what I hoped. Cloak has +3con and sound/chaos res, gloves are pretty good with poi/sound and some nice damage, but it has Anti-Magic shell and somehow you can concentrate with an AM shell. So, useless.

*you can't concentrate

I'm puzzled why you are missing so much ... Does you bow skill or +to hit go up as you concentrate more?

No it isn't according to the 'C'haracter screen.

I just thought about being "lazy" how bad does that affect your ability to shoot stuff?

On 16.4.2012 02:02 chris wrote:
Lazy makes everything bad, including shooting ... but its not a bad idea for an archer or even a ranger.

I think snipers actually prefer crossbows, so you might try using your amazing +22 damage crossbow of velocity!

Hmm, I'll try and see if it works better. Thanks for the idea.

On 16.4.2012 09:52 Arjen wrote:
Switched the the crossbow mentioned by Chris. I think this solved my problem, I still miss shots, but far less than with the bow. And now I miss against higher level monsters and not stuff like 'd'ragons.

After shooting Jugde Morris half dead with one shot I suddenly remembered I could recall into Angband for some ego drops as I never encountered Hagen or Gachpin. So in Angband I found both of them; Hagen sucked as he didn't drop his spear, Gachpin (1 shot kill) was very kind and dropped Tranduriel giving me permanent ESP. So now I need more speed and a pack of seeker bolts, But a nicer crossbow is welcome too. ;)

Still using the robe of twilight and the escort of the Hoard was 95% meleed... 0 AC isn't that bad if you have all resses.

Lazy gives -8 shooting skills. By L50, your personality will give -16 total to your shooting since you get -8 from the get go, and another -8 * lvl / 50. Odd ... you must get lazier the more experienced you get? Still, as a High-Elf you should be able to overcome this.

Also, you always miss at least 10% of the time (rather than 5% for everybody else).

Be careful about the low AC if you leave the Anti-melee caves. A monster like Grendel could easily insta-kill you!

On 16.4.2012 15:45 Arjen wrote:
Hmmm, so lazy is actually sort of hardcore mode as you have a lot of negative skills/attributes and only 3 nice items which are hard to get by. (Morgoth/Unicorn/One Ring?) Next time I'll choose an other personality. ;)

And you are right about hardhitters... Might be wiser to check for regular equipment before I meet the likes of them.

So, back in the Caves to kill some uniques. Killed all the Judges except Fire, also some ringwraith and higher undead (thx to Judge Death and his summonfrenzy). Looking for Smaug so I can kill him twice, but did find Scatha and... Jack! Damn he hurt even in the anti melee cave. He heals too much... Good thing you can prevent him from healing (I think, it worked for me). He was kind enough to not drop his cloak or anything useful (helm of beaty and a slay dragon weapon).

Did hit clvl 36 and I was very curious about the plasma bolt, looks just like my ice and fire bolt but then with lightning. (How high are the multipliers on those elemental bolts anyways?) O well, it kills stuff, but so did my previous options. (Jack died from of a superb shot of fire dealing ***** damage)

I have to say, Sniper just feels like a weaponmaster with crossbows. I like those specialists. (I guess thats why I never play mage/ranger/rogue/ect.)

Time to find Smaug and head to the Cloning pits (could use some more steel bolts).

The Bow and Crossbow weaponmasters are still on the To-Do list. I'm rather looking forward to both, but I must admit I haven't really played Sniper, so I don't know how they compare.

Holy Carp ... Where did you get that diamond edge?

If you haven't noticed yet, Plasma bolt is fantastically awesome and does more damage then any other Sniper attack, except the final one.

On 17.4.2012 16:58 Arjen wrote:
Noticed it about the plasma bolt. I'm using it a lot now.

Just completed the Cloning Pits with absolutely nothing more useful than Frodo's boots... I always hope to pick up some nice stuff like Cambeleg or with a lot of luck art Crossbow or Frakir. But I got nothing. :) Life sucks, I'm wondering if I could complete the Old Castle, maybe I get a Crossbow as reward. (I have no idea and like it that way.) But the Iron Lich and the Titans are worrying me. All tough dudes and the summoners suck.

Ow and:
- the Edge is from Jasra
- how do you kill awake no-movers who can summon? Yibb was owning my ass and I haven't even hit him ones as he was sitting a nice blindspot of a room.

Look what I found... But I'm not sure if xshot is that useful for a Sniper as you don't do a lot of shooting.

Ran into Brand several times now, engaged him once with an almost lethal ending... He resists base and had way more firepower than me. Sucks... Need to bring some heals with me and a lot of phase door. :)

On 18.4.2012 11:39 Arjen wrote:
Shit... forgot he could do that... Already had 4 stars of his health with double shots... 250+ damage storm, sucks :)

Ow and without any intell about Runeswords I'm never going to wield one of those, what kind of stats are those? And perma cursed.

So next one won't be a lazy anymore as the chance of getting to one of the three is too small actually. (Like I'm that good in Chengband...) :)

Runeswords: I'm still trying to get the balance right on these guys. Basically, it is a sword that feeds off your foes. When killing an opponent, it might gain plusses to hit, or damage, or it might even improve its damage dice. It feeds better off uniques. Occasionally, it might pick up a slay. Beware: As the sword grows more powerful it also picks up curses! Also, the -50AC never improves. Initially the Runesword was too powerful, so I knocked the odds back a bit, but now I think I made it too tedious. So, I'll try again for next release!

Brand: He's a bastard! If he didn't get you then maybe his curse would have? Resist base is highly annoying, but that guy never sleeps so you can't sneak up on him.

Snipers: I'm not sure how best to play snipers after the initial shot. The best I've come up with is to dig elaborate winding anti-summoning corridors with short little straight nubs for resting/concentrating/luring. Shoot and then blink out of line of sight and concentrate while your foe navigates towards you. This works better in Angband then in the Dragon's Lair since the terrain is so messed up in the latter, and its hard to undertake large digging projects.

I was carrying phase doors with me for that strategy, but that doesn't work anymore in rooms, so I was avoiding those for big fights. But the phase door (or phase door shot) makes you able to live after your first shot. I might start a Sniper demigod and get that 50% energy on teleporting ability.

I was wondering tho, does the +1 brand from Hephaestus also work on the "magic" brands of Snipers? He might be a great parentage if so. :)

And the runesword sounds very interesting (If you are a fighter, can you specialize in rune swords?)

But the Sniper is a very nice class to play.

Chris- see your last character for some balancing thoughts.

Re: Rune Swords, I have to ask, since I never found one or played with it too much on debug mode: What's the strongest it can get? Can it pick up pval bonuses?
