Back at it again...although I'm still missing resist con I have a staff of tele and 4 wands of tele other. In other words I have a good chance of making it lower. I just need that first spell book : (

Now that I have free action its time to dive : ) I just need to find resist con and that first damn spell book. Hell I even considered going back up....but that would hurt my turn count. I have a pretty good kit so I'm hopeful that this could be the one.

I need some Con potions I think...the monsters are getting to be really tough down here...

I stuck around at that height for a bit. If you go after the dragons and trolls and other creatures with object drops, the stat potions should come fairly quickly. I even found a couple potions of augmentation, and took great enjoyment in quaffing them. My character took a huge leap in power when I went from 1 to 2 attacks per round, then I was comfortable to dive deeper. But then again, my turncount is nowhere close to Ewans. :)

On 17.4.2012 03:37 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
I just took a troll pit out : ) I'm all about the pits. In a lot of ways this game is like V. And I have been looking for all of the normal dragons and avoiding the confusers at all cost.

Ever death I have had has been the result of being confused and not being able to do anything about it.
Note the staff of curing. I had always felt like it was a useless staff, but for iron man style play its really helpful. And this is really ironman lite since the One Ring makes things a lot easier...in fact once I get past stat gain I'm thinking about just going down to 4500' as fast as I can : )
Why did you make ego items have hidden powers too?

On 17.4.2012 04:44 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
I found a Crossbow of power...now all three of my launchers are powerful : ) I hate that I have to have three of them, but playing ironman style I don't have much choice since my melee is crap at this point.

A Gauth just drained most of my tele other wands : (

Other than kit - which was awesome - most of my stat potions came (i) initially from young d pits, (ii) slightly later from T pits, and eventually (iii) from the floor, especially !Aug.

And yes, confusion was a major issue, although for me the major continuing problem was wall-passers until the very endgame. I was carrying swap items for rConf the whole game.

My only real advice would be to use slings more than I did - they *really* hit hard.

On 17.4.2012 17:27 nppangband wrote:
As for why ego items have hidden powers, they always did. It was Vanilla that changed that in the last couple years. In hindsight I would have given the player a rod of *identify" as well. So far in my game I have found far more *identify* scrolls than items that need it.

Ewan is right. The slings do more damage than is indicated on the character screen. Rogues get bonuses iwth them. And when you find a create artifact scroll, I recommend using it on a sling.

On 17.4.2012 17:48 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
To Ewan: I've been going for pits, but haven't had too much luck with those yet. Honestly I'm more concerned with confusion a this point. Confusion is really the only thing other than getting insta killed with can stop me at this point. THe thing that I'm sure we all know about most 'bands other than Sil is that you can control your environment a great deal.
To Nppangband :
I'm all about the Slings but I keep the other launchers to save ammo. I've been using mostly ranged attacks. Especially for ancient dragons.

ouch. There are so many things in NPP that can hit you for more than 288 hit points at that level. A ring of Con instead of Dex might have made a big difference.

I truely don't know how Ewan did it.

In NPP, the hydras with 12 heads or more can be pretty nasty, 13 headed hydras are one of the worst in the game. Also Azathoth is probably the second most dangerous creature in the game besides Morgoth. But as a rule of thumb, if the monster is in NPP but not vanilla, it is probably pretty mean (the many servants of the valar being the exception, though). Liches are good in NPP, because the deeper ones drop chests, and don't hit you for too much damage in one round. As for Morgoth, he is difficult until his mana is low. Then he spends most of his time healing and regenerating his mana and you can do some good damage against him.

I finally found two game changers : ) Angrist +4 speed and other nice things about it. And Carlammas+2 Con so I have more staying power. I hate how the Istars can find you even if you teleport them away....I had to use to destruction scrolls to get rid of them : (

Same old same old. I'm at the point where I'm avoiding a lot of monsters. But I'm looking out of some easy pickings so that I can buff up a bit. Now I just have to not be stupid or greedy...easier said that done : (

you are doing great! i have one suggestion, once you begin reaching depths where you encounter time hounds and undead pits, teleportation can start to become unsafe; the chances of teleporting into an instadeath start to get significantly higher. you could consider ditching the teleport staves soon. plus it would lighten your load a bit!

@murphy...Thanks for the tip. I actually did dumb them because, what did I really need them for since I have resist con. That is the main reason that I even had them. And now I have a blade of Chaos for those rough spots where I need that resist...honestly a Chaos dragon shield would be a big help right about now, if they even make them.

I'm starting to bag uniques right and left...but I still don't have my stats up to max level. I don't think I have found one potion of augmentation yet. I did have to flee a Wyrm themed lvl....Didn't want to but I did. I think that I'm getting 4th place if I don't do anything stupid...I could go a bit faster, but this is the first time that I have really played NPP and I'm taking my time to enjoy it since I'm not even close to second place : )

Murphy: Another thing that I should say is that had I not had to scum for stat potions I would have went for the win awhile ago. I'm not an ironman player, so I might have wasted healing on killing Uniques...because so many of them do so much damage and I don't think that Hobbit rogues are that great at melee and you don't want to be hit with mana storm after mana storm when you have few healing potions.
So really the lack of being able to go use the shops kinda made the last few hours kinda...BORING. You can only scum dragon pits for so long before you get bored.
Still I never would have tried NPP if not for this comp...and third of probably 4th place isn't so bad. If I had enough time I'd try it again with auto scum for good lvls on to see if that would make my game quicker...

Ouch. Sorry to see that. I was hoping you would win as well. I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was going for my last potion of wisdom. I had cleared out a green dragon pit and only had a couple young dragons left. I was holding down the left and right arrow keys clearing out a corridor of young dragons as they left the room. They were pretty much a one-shot kill at that point. It took me a half second to notice the greater servant of yvanna that joined the group. When I lifted my finger off the keyboard I had only 13 hp left.

It looks like it took three breaths to kill you, so you definitely would have had a turn, possibly two.

...Yeah, this is not the first death by wife :( But it happens. Sadly it never would have happened...if I wasn't distracted. The really sad part for me is the -1 hps. And what is even safer is that I think I played a pretty great if slightly slow game. I didn't take any stupid risks like I did with my last two tries.
I wish I could change the last message to wife breaths distraction....LOL.

Note to others don't let your S.O talk to you while dangerous creatures are around. Or rather just stop playing for awhile.
