My very first Sil archer. Not really sure what I am doing, but it seems to be effective enough so far. I'd really like to kill Morgoth (if I can get that far) but not sure how possible that is with archery! In desperate need of _Revelations so I can continue my forging adventure.

Any archery advice welcome!

Don't miss! Hah, uh, yeah. Sorry. Song of sharpness works on arrows. I think that'd have to be crucial for killing the big daddy.

That's a great sword and shield for an archer.

I'd guess you've got a very powerful character here. Good luck with the end game!

Is your combat control built mostly on stealth and Listen? Or do just kill things quickly enough for that not to be an issue?

On 10.4.2012 23:05 half wrote:
It took me a while to understand the Shield of Strength...

Nicely weighted bow. Time for an artefact one?

Enjoying crippling shot? I find it to be very powerful for archery specialists.

On 10.4.2012 23:38 debo wrote:
Half: Does bow weight actually have an effect on anything other than total burden? (i.e. are there effects similar to what weight does to melee weapons?)

On 10.4.2012 23:40 debo wrote:
Also, what was the point of the shield of strength for those of us who suck at Sil? :)

On 10.4.2012 23:40 Psi wrote:
@HM - yep, not missing and sharpness are part of the grand plan. Sharpness will probably be on an amulet assuming I find enough forges.

@Scatha - I try and take things one at a time, but providing there is a little distance between me and my targets I can generally drop stuff before it reaches me anyway. Arrows of piercing are very handy for rows of critters in corridors. Interestingly I had a bit of fun being pursued by 3 grotesques at once - first time I could really watch what they did using Listen. However I just could not lose them. On previous characters I've been able to lose them by closing doors - is that down to more stealth perhaps?

@half - I made the bow at the first forge and haven't seen a better one all game. Found a couple of Doriath shortbows, but that is it. Crippling shot is great, but I miss the confusion of cruel blow. Even if I can slow Morgoth he is still going to be heading straight for me... and what do I do when he gets there? Assuming I am fast, does that make me three times faster than a slow Morgoth? So with rapid fire is that 6 arrows per one of his moves? Is his regeneration based on his speed in anyway? Big assumption that I get that far given I am new to archery.

I'll knock up an artefact bow soon I think. I'd like 1d11 with radiance and maybe a slay or two. Given the top end uniques out there, dragons and rauko may be sensible - though I'd love to be able to kill Troll Guards a little quicker. I hate the protection on serpents so I'd love to have extra dice against them rather than wasting my piercing arrows. I'm also feeling nervous about vampire lords - shame there is no slay for either!

A few questions on skills...

What would happen with flaming arrows on Dailir (or any artefact arrow) - does it survive? I assume Mogoth doesn't resist fire - what about poison (assuming I find some of those)?

Can concentration apply to archery?

With Listen I see asterisks which I can't target using 'f' for example. I can manually target them though, is there a penalty for that?

Are there any other obvious skills for an archer?

On 10.4.2012 23:46 Psi wrote:
@debo - a lighter bow weight, like weapon weight, increases your chance of criticals but reduces the potential bonus from strength. Rapid fire acts as if you had three less strength and dexterity. The shield takes me to 5 strength, so my two shots act as if I had 2 strength which gives me the maximum bonus on a 2lb bow. Sorry that doesn't sound very clear reading it back!

You've answered most of the questions you had. I'm not actually sure about Dailir -- half and I talked about this just the other day, but couldn't remember how it worked, so I'm afraid you might have to test.

On 15.4.2012 15:39 half wrote:
Great work Psi! Do you have any advice on balancing archery? We have so few archers that this is difficult to do. I'd previously found it to be a bit too good, and had made it worse for 1.0. Crippling Shot might need to be toned back a bit (harder to trigger? shorter duration? saving throw?). I had exactly the same type of confrontation with Morgoth, getting 6 shots per step he took, which is hard for him to recover from. Another issue is that with special arrows, flaming shot, and the difference in how far away the target is when they enter line of sight, an archer's best combat is quite a bit better than their worst.

On 17.4.2012 17:17 Psi wrote:
Hard to say really. It is especially hard to balance against an ubersmith build!

The final battle was rather anticlimactic. I'd lit up the right-hand, double-width corridor and placed a couple of glyphs across it in the hope of slowing Morgoth down and then taken my position as far away as my screen would allow. However he only managed two steps towards me! With hindsight I probably should have forged a second =Dam+2 instead of the =Dex ring and then I'd have hit even harder.

I imagine things would have been harder without arrows of piercing which were great against serpents and other high protection foes. I was very careful to only use them when I needed to and had a whole stockpile left to fight V.

I guess if you want to tone it down, then the obvious places are the 50% reduction against evasion, increasing the roll needed for criticals or increasing the number of criticals needed for crippling. However ranged combat is always going to be powerful in a game when most monsters only have melee attacks.
