Probably my best melee/evasion only character. Also, best foray into a character who goes for criticals instead of consistent raw damage. I'm going to die to invisibles. I keep getting attacked by things I cannot see, even with a good light source. I need to luck up and find something of true-sight. When I drink a true-sight potion, I occasionally will see the shadow, or 'R', that is nom nomming my brains out.

Putting a few points into Perception, and perhaps taking Keen Senses, will help you quite a bit with the invisible types (they stack with the +10 bonus from sources of True Sight).

Yeah, I hear you, but I really am only limiting myself to only melee/evasion and skills in those trees. I did a fair bit of stalling from 600-750 and am hoping to find that elusive item of true-sight. On the upside, my light radius is 5 now, thanks to the blessed realm amulet. And, while I was lamenting my starting 1 strength, the power gloves (go go nintendo) and soon +1 str from the strength tree will make rapid attack a real possibility. I'm getting loads of riposte attacks. I'm wondering if I get 2 attacks with riposte and rapid attack per riposte. If so, that would make going at Morgy with essentially 4 attacks a possibility. I wonder where Angrist is?

Sorry, my mistake missing the melee/evasion only restriction.

Good luck! I'm interested to see how this turns out. It does seem that your low Perception may get you into trouble with the hard to spot monsters, and your low Will may make Vampires or Dragons awkward, but I'm hoping you can pull through.

I think Riposte attacks (like almost all free attacks apart from Flanking and Controlled Retreat, which are in some sense a free move added onto your attack) don't let Rapid Attack or Two-Weapon Fighting kick in.

Tevildo dropped a crown of true sight! I've also bagged Lungorthin and other uniques. So far, so good. I'm having a devil of a time with ancient emerald serpents, and Nameless. But, I just found a nice battle axe so I can always resort to my old charge technique. I've got all the extras I intended to get, so now all my experience is going into melee or evasion. I would like some better armor. I wish my str had been better around 400' or so when I found a mail corslet of +1 to more hitpoints. Delmereth is a nice addition. I have rapid attack turned off for now, but if I'm willing to spend a str potion I can double up my !!!!'s for more damage. And, true about the riposte only giving me one extra attack.

It really is a pity you can't get cruel blow. Have you tried that with a critical hit character yet? Even more fun with Zone of Control. Then again, perhaps they don't survive the initial attack...

Alas! I was not doing enough damage. I wish I had found Angrist, I think that might have made a different, but maybe not. It's a shame I'm using the mattock in the death screen, but Morgy put me in a pit and I needed a way out, and then thought I could maybe knock back a monster, get a silmaril and run out. Of course, I forgot to turn off rapid attack, so that hurt my chances on knocking back that serpent. Dang! Oh well, that was fun, and informative too. First critical seeker, best melee/evasion yet and first lowish protection as well. Even with my ridiculous high evasion, Morgoth still managed to hit me, and I didn't get auto-ripostes on him, though I did get a fair amount with Delmereth. Also, I was heavily stunned by Morgoth at one point, maybe to earthquakes, or maybe to his hammer, I'm not sure. I often make a save right at the throne room and I went ahead and tried again after I died. He too bit the dust, but got Morgoth down to three stars before doing so! I think the main difference was that he didn't produce any earthquakes until late in that fight, while he put me in a pit very early in this one.

Other than Angrist, a few rings of damage would've been nice. Also, I found no Con amulets, that also would've helped. No freedom staves either, so lots of chests had to go unopened. But, it's hard to complain with some of the good things I found. The drops tend to balance out. Additionally, I didn't explore as hard at the end to get more potions and probably the aforementioned jewelry. I always felt tenative, and a bit fragile, even with ridiculous fighting prowess that I usually never feel. It seems like darkness creatures, when banded together, have their darkness stack to make it damn near impossible to see them! I could see individual Raukar no problem, but when like 3 of them would be in a pack, I couldn't, so I had to fight in a corridor until the last one remained, of whom I could see. I found that interesting.

Have you considered open ended dice rolls? Like, a roll of 20 induces another roll of a d20, and so on until a non-20 result? It would be neat for your nightmare mode, where a lucky orc who rolled like, 4 20's in a row, could kill your ubercharacter. Same for evasion rolls? I've always been fond of Rolemaster and it's critical tables.

Yes, darkness creatures (and light creatures) stack their effects. This can make even Shadow Worm Masses tricky, but is especially nasty for Gwathraukar.

We currently just use one open dice roll, I think: an open (1d2 - 1) for the attack bonus on a deathblade. I think I just tend to find open die rolls a bit mathematically inelegant in the distributions they produce (other than this one!). I don't like single flatly distributed die rolls much either, which is why most rolls in Sil have multiple dice (e.g. skills are opposed 1d10 or 1d20, which is like 2d10 or 2d20). This gives enough unlikely possibilities for my taste (1 in 100 or 1 in 400).
