You mention the weird start -- and I see that before turn 1,200 and at 150ft you picked up Heavy Armour Use -- so am I right in thinking you pretty much spent your first 6,000 exp on Evasion (perhaps dipping into the first few points of Melee) and haven't touched it since?
On 30.3.2012 18:10 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Yeah, I went straight for heavy armor use, even when I was only wearing like, 11 lbs of armor. This is essentially another perception based warrior, but it's hard to tell with all the muck I've got going on all over the place... his purity has been diluted, for sure. The smithing is an odd occurence. I was fighting Kemarauko and grotesques and didn't have a digger, so I spent a good chunk of experience and made one of Belegost. That was the sole purpose of smithing, but dammit if I'm not standing on Orudreth for the first time ever. 19 max?! Wow. With the +3 forge gloves I just picked up 3 turns ago and umpteen grace potions my remaining experience pool is looking like a pair of speed boots, maybe. Smarter would probably be a dwarf mask of something and boots of freedom, freeing up my ring slots. I've got 2 1d2 rings of protection I'm dying to wear for the hell of it.
On 30.3.2012 19:21 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Yeah, I couldn't resist the call of Orodruth. It didn't hurt that there were two 3-use forges nearby as well. So, I made the Warhammer of Bob the Builder and slapped +1 smithing, -1dex, armorsmith and masterpiece on it. Then, I made a dwarf mask of more con and a point of will. Then, I debated making a cool mattock, but settled on the far more useful boots of always moving fast. When I drink a potion of quickness, it still says I get faster and slow down, but I'm assuming nothing is happening there. In any case, I'm drawing dangerous creatures now. I'm hoping to find the remaining uniques.
On 30.3.2012 20:15 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Alright, I've never felt so powerful before! I've only ever offed Morgy and got all three silmarils once before, and this guy feels a whole lot stronger. Plus, I'll have 14,000 xp to spend once I take my next turn, which is to enter the throne room. I need sleep to properly execute this, so maybe tomorrow I'll know how best to spend those points. Plus, all the major uniques are dead. I think.
On 31.3.2012 01:22 Fendell Orcbane wrote: Nice! I've never had a speed item before so I can imagine that speed is a killer in Sil as well as the other bands!
On 31.3.2012 01:59 HallucinationMushroom wrote: It's the same as drinking a quickness potion, only permanent. I want to try a non-charge attempt to kill Morgy by taking advantage of the fact that he can be knocked out of sight + opportunist. So, with 20 perception, I ought to be able to get up to around +45 to hit by attacking, then waiting for him to come back. Well, that's the plan, anyway. It sounds good on paper but I imagine I'll find some fatal flaw with it.
On 31.3.2012 02:28 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Wow, my plan was solid gold. I buffed with a Con, Dex and Str potion and I waited, attacked, waited, attacked while in my self-made hidey hole at the top of the Throne Room map. Stars were flying off pretty quick. He got hung up around 2 or 3 stars when some other monsters broke up my concentration build-up, but it didn't matter. After I knocked him back with maybe a star of health left, I leaped out and charged him and killed him. He never even touched me. I'm hoping the crown is around somewhere, when I killed Morgy I faced an old Moria problem... nowhere to drop the loot. No Grond for me, or about 4 or 5 other items that were unidentified when lost.
On 31.3.2012 02:49 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Whew, it was there! Now I'm considering just staying down here and putting myself up as the new dark lord of Middle Earth. I cleared out all of Morgoth's vaults, and I'm sad to say that there really wasn't much worth hoarding.
Some thoughts, please keep in mind I'll ramble without much edit... I am very sleep deprived.
After trying to kill Morgoth and dying with about 4 other characters, this one feels so overpowered that it's sickening how easily I won. In angband and most variants, Morgoth eats through rock like those rock eating Raukar do. That would definitely make Morgy harder to kill. Morgoth often sets up his own sort of knock-me-back-out-site-corridors with his earthquakes, but being able to charge straight through rubble and walls would make him more fearsome. Also, line of sight opens up for other monsters, and also deprives characters from hiding in a safe place, which I totally was. The top of throne room has a really easy corridor for 2v1, but with some quick Belegost work, it becomes the perfect anti-summon-corridor maker. Lame, yes, and I won't do it again unless Morgy gets much harder. I didn't think I'd ever say that about Morgy in this game, ever. Perhaps throne room walls should be made permanent? Also, as previously discussed, knockback+opportunist probably shouldn't exist.
Perception is awesome. Concentration is awesome. Concentration and focused attack together is fearsome! I was regularly getting criticals with a mattock!
For now, sleeping pills kicking in. I may or may not drive this guy home. It would really be just a formality. Can't wait for 1.0.3!
On 31.3.2012 07:51 Fendell Orcbane wrote: Damn I need to kill Morgoth...I honestly feel shitty about not being able to do it...What weapon did you use to kill him? See I've been able to attack Morgoth and keep him stunned and confused but he always regenerated before I could do some serious damage : (
On 31.3.2012 14:36 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I used the -4,5d3 mattock. With the str potion and damage rings, I was dishing 5d14 per regular and opportunist hit. That become 6d14 pretty quickly. Hitting was pretty much automatic, and any hit was a guaranteed knockback. The other time I used charge+knockback+opportunist which is much riskier since Morgoth get to attack and make earthquakes and such... but it's more fun! And, damn, don't feel bad. Morgoth has killed me way more times than I've killed him. I had the same problem with the regeneration rate. This guy is like a void character for ToME... his entire build and setup and grind and whatnot was designed just for killing Morgoth. My charger was actually around 10,000 turns faster.
On 31.3.2012 14:48 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Oops, I meant 5,000 turns faster. I was thinking that Ewan offed him 10,000 turns faster. Crazy-sauce!
On 31.3.2012 15:21 half wrote: Well done!
You are right that speed 3 is the maximum the player can reach (and 1 is the minimum).
Regarding knockback and opportunist, I think Scatha and I have been fairly clear in a couple of places on the forum that this is a bug, and it has been removed in the development version for 1.0.3. By all means have fun with it in 1.0.2, but it was never meant to be balanced like that (nor does it make any thematic sense).
Would your technique have been easy without this? I would have thought that only attacking every second turn and not charging would have not done enough damage (without the opportunist blow), but maybe it is just enough and with speed 3 might be more than enough.
By the way, I think you have graduated from Noldor! The Edain are designed for people like you. Sure their stats are not so interesting, but things like Melee specialty and Stealth specialty are quite neat. Noldor will be more playable for you and Psi and ewan in the future when we have a Nightmare mode (probably not by 1.0.3, as I'm mainly working through all the minor bugfix things that people have asked for).
On 31.3.2012 15:37 HallucinationMushroom wrote: A tassel! I WANT A TASSEL! Yah!!! I made a save before the fight since I figured I'll never have a guy this strong again, so I'll probably mess around with it some. I'll turn off opportunist and charge and see if I could've gone roundvsround with him. And, humans... no way! I guess part of the appeal of your game is that it is difficult enough that I have to play as hard as I can just to win, sometimes. I slay about 10 characters per each one that makes it to 750', and of those, maybe 1 in 5 goes on to do well. Not having to worry about voluntarily taking challenges or avoiding tactics or xyz is very refreshing. Maybe humans, maybe one day, but not this month for me. Sorry I didn't recall the opportunist forum before, I don't retain much to be honest. When I ramble, I don't intend to make any kind of sense. I just like to brainstorm on paper, since I tend to forget what it is that I just thought 3 seconds ago. Drives my wife crazy.
On 31.3.2012 16:56 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Okay, I feel much better about my character now. I was feeling the cheese thing morning, but I just reloaded at the point where I was walking into the throne room and turned off knockback. I did a 1v1 Morgoth with the mattock, +2 damage ring, 1d3 protection ring, aforementioned potion buffs and just barely, by the skin of my teeth, won. Once concentration really started taking off, he would wear me down to the 30's or 40's in hitpoints, requiring me to rebuff and start over. I eventually won with 7 hitpoints. Now, I wish this had been how I had really won, but any case, it's nice knowing that I can win without knockback and knockback+opportunist. No charges, just whappy whap whap. I'll have to make another character and try to reel one in like this official-like. But, I really ought to try a whole new concept... probably something revolving around high-criticals.
On 31.3.2012 22:34 half wrote: Wow: you can beat Morgoth in a straight fight without Knock Back or Cruel Blow or the like? That is indeed impressive.
Fair enough regarding humans. I just thought it wouldn't be too hard for you to win with one, but I suppose we don't see your true body count here. High criticals are very doable, even without stealth, and a lots of fun too. Try that.
On 1.4.2012 04:34 HallucinationMushroom wrote: My conclusion is that Morgoth must get very lonely at the bottom of Angband, and then pesky elves come and steal his only decent possessions, the silmarils.
