I've been pretty lucky in my artefact finds, though I could really do with an enchanted helm...
On 19.3.2012 13:06 meneldil wrote: This character is fun. I've started being able to take out Great Drakes without too much difficulty (I took at two great cold drakes at once at 850ft..., and gfd without breaking a sweat...) I've also just found Glamdring (to which I was guided by my staff of treasures), but sadly I don't think I'm going to use it: Dramborleg's damage output is just much higher, which with charge, knockback, and opportunist, is pretty important...
I don't deal fantastically with crowds at the moment, (damage output being limited by my one attack per turn), so I think my strategy for the throne room will have to be Herb of Rage + song of slaying (possibly woven with staying or sharpness). Morgoth will be dealing some nasty punches, though, and I'm sure my armour won't be able to withstand them as is. Not entirely sure how to deal with this. Any suggestions?
On 19.3.2012 13:40 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Is your goal to simply grab silmarils or to kill Morgoth? In either case, I think your plan sounds really good. My advice on staying alive would be to switch to a heavier weapon so you always knock-back Morgoth, and everything else. If it were me, I would want a great-axe, or a mattock, or something at least 10-12 lbs that really dishes damage while retaining around a native +23 to hit. With song of slaying, you'll be hitting +30 really quickly in the throne room and then it's just a bloodbath. At that point, evasion isn't as important, and your protection would still be good sans shield. Best defense is a good offense? A great vampiric axe would be lovely.

On 19.3.2012 14:00 meneldil wrote: I don't particularly rate my chances of killing Morgoth (though maybe this is unfair, perhaps I'll take a save copy before heading to 1000ft and attempt killing Morgoth once my real attempt is finished), so I think I'll just try to grab a single Silmaril and run.
Ditching my shield in favour of a great axe sounds like a pretty reasonable plan, if slightly terrifying. Would be lovely to get a vampiric great axe: I've just found a special great axe, so maybe I'll hope it's vampiric ;)
P.S. Yeah, that halberd was epic, I can think of few situations where I wouldn't want to wield it...
On 19.3.2012 14:06 meneldil wrote: Bah, the axe turned out to be Rauko-slaying.
I'm at the top of some stairs to Morgoth's TR. Kind of tempted to go down, but I've got loads of time so I could potter around hunting for better gear/experience if I fancied. Thoughts?
On 19.3.2012 14:30 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I would run the staff of treasures out before I went to the throne room to pick off tasty potions, but that's just me. I think this guy could nab a silmaril, no problem. If you burn through a lot of consumables you might have a devil of a time getting out though.
On 19.3.2012 14:49 meneldil wrote: So, I went down, wielding Dramborleg as damage output was actually about the same: I was going to switch to the Great Axe for Morgoth, but it seems to have been unnecessary.
Getting a silmaril was pretty easy, and Ancalagon and Ungoliant have both fallen. Gorthaur just appeared, and the question is: do I attempt to kill him too, or just run away now?
On 19.3.2012 14:53 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Wow, you're sitting pretty on healing. If you're just trying to get the silmaril out I'd go ahead and choose whatever strategy gets you to the stairs the safest and fastest. You seem to have it all under control!
On 19.3.2012 15:24 meneldil wrote: Wow, staves of revelations have been amazing. using my leftover charges on the staff of treasures I was able to find another one and a staff of recharging. Unfortunately, I'm now down to 1 charge, with a tricky level currently (Morgoth is between me and where I need to tunnel to open up the area to the stairs...) I can either go down and up again, or just try and get past him. Thoughts?
On 19.3.2012 15:26 meneldil wrote: Hmm: a possible plan would be to get exchange places and use that to get past. I'd probably be facing quite a few hits from the hammer, though.
On 19.3.2012 15:33 meneldil wrote: Ok, managed to go round in a loop and get there before him with a potion of quickness, he caught up as I tunnelled but I was able to get away again. 100ft was a gift, with a staircase in the next room, so I used my last charge at 50ft, which let me get there really very quickly.
Now just to get past the gate wardens! I think I might start singing slaying again to do this: it should be fun if nothing else :)
On 19.3.2012 15:44 meneldil wrote: Victory! A Silmaril successfully prised from the Iron Crown and returned to give light to the world!
My song hit +21, and I was one-hitting those trolls pretty nicely :D Carcaroth dropped pretty quickly (two hits?) which was nice to see as he got some nasty poison on me at first.
That was very fun, and a nice way for my first* non-competition 1.0.2 character to go ;)
Also: a nice vindication of my belief that heavy-armour characters could make it (I've tried several in the past, but haven't had so much luck, usually getting killed in the mid-game).
* I think this was my first 1.0.2 character that wasn't competition, but I might be wrong, as I may have played a little on a different computer: I can't remember.

On 20.3.2012 11:15 half wrote: Great work on behalf of protection characters everywhere. Could many things harm you? Would rings of protection or Song of Staying have been useful? From your Dwarf Mask and use of Hador's shield over Fingolfin's it seems that resistances had become an issue rather than getting the last few points of protection. Nice corslet too.
Good work on keeping so many charges of revelations for the endgame.
On 20.3.2012 12:17 meneldil wrote: I was still taking a bit of damage every now and again, from lucky hits vs unlucky protection rolls, but most of the time I was doing fine except against particularly hard-hitters (e.g. Morgoth) and elemental attacks. However, with Hador and the Dwarf mask that was mostly ok too. I did sometimes switch to Fingolfin, but I was more paranoid about a huge breath-attack when I didn't expect it/before I remembered to switch than I felt that the extra protection would help.
Also, Elessar's regeneration meant that taking small amounts of damage wasn't too much of a problem.
re: rings of protection: they would have been fabulously useful, but unfortunately I didn't see a single one in my journey downwards. :( I almost took smithing at around 400ft to forge 2 [1d1] rings, but figured I'd find some later. I possibly should have done so at 900/950ft, but at that stage I felt sufficiently tough anyway (as indeed I was)
Likewise, although I was wearing the dwarf mask until the end, it wasn't particularly out of joy at that. I just found very few helms in the course of my descent: I found one early on, which then got damaged beyond usefulness, resulting in not having one for a while. Eventually I found a mithril helm [+0, 1d2], and then the dwarf mask, and I plumped for the mask. For a short period I was wearing a superior great helm I found, but then that got acid-damaged too. Overall, though, I was definitely lacking in decent helmets.
The corslet was a definite win though: I found it pretty early (from Orcobal, possibly?), and was pretty ecstatic.
