Scary enough... With this guy, I managed to get my Evasion up to +28, my highest ever, making me virtually untouchable. Meanwhile, I'll try to increase my Melee as high as possible (or to a good number), and carefully make my way to the Throne Room. Check out the gear I have now! I have so many artifacts with this one that I had to destroy a few just to make room.

Gearing up for the Throne Room. I picked CON and Stun. I found this Helm of True Sight [+0,+1d2] <+3>, meaning a helm without penalty to Evasion. So, I can toss the Shadow Cloak now. I made two trips to 950ft. So, here I am now...in front of the 'Orodruth' forge!

This is it. Here I go again, for the 5th time!

I decided to use the rest of the points to get Majesty. I had forfeit the Orodruth forge.

Looks like I'll can ditch the Ring of Evasion [+2] to make room in case I have drop shield right away, when my Evasion is already at 27.

I guess I can throw out the Greatsword of Rauko Slaying, or keep it?

My final pre-Throne Room prep:
20 Healing sources
6 !CON
4 !DEX
2 !STR
7 !Elemental Resistance

This time, I'm going to buff early, and head west. Heading east got me killed the last time I was in the Throne Room. LOL!

Oh yeah, 3 !Quickness. I'm noting this before I forget!

I'm in the Throne Room...AND I'm safe, so far!

Upon entering, Lungorthin awaited in the front of the staircase. I started by quaffing 1 !DEX and 1 !Quickness, and went west, and drew in this Rauko and the nearby Troll guard, and destroyed them. In the same area, I encountered a group of Easterling spies and a few Vampire lords. I took them out. And then, an Unrelenting Horror showed up. Well, well. I singled this one out, fought it 1 on 1, and killed it. So, right now, I'm sitting in the northwest, preparing for my next move...

On 16.3.2012 22:06 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Speaking of Troll guards, I was able to destroy most of those that hang around the staircase.

Not again....This time, I had a lot of trouble freeing out the Silmaril, with every weapon I had, except for Dramborleg. I was afraid to sacrifice it. I tried like 5 times with each weapon, to no avail. And, the Nargil weapon was useless. While I had trouble freeing out the Silmaril, Morgoth pummeled me down. To recover, I started quaffing CON and healing potions like a madman, unless the gorged status hit. After that, I was finished off by Morgoth. What the heck.... I'm done for now. This will probably be my last purely Melee character for a while. I'll have to do more practical combos, like more Stealthy or Song-based characters from this point onwards. Oh man... :(

I'm aware that I could have invest in the Song of Sharpness. But then again, I wanted to be one of the few players who could win without using Song/Perception/Stealth/Smithing, hence purely (or mostly) Melee. It's not happening. I might as well take advantage of abilities offered in these other ability trees, like Song of Sharpness.

To anyone reading this, has anyone (especially those who already beat Sil) EVER been able to free a Silmaril without any source of Sharpness (Weapon or Song of Sharpness)? If yes, how tries on average did it take? Thanks in advance!

I think I freed my first silmaril with a mattock. Or, maybe it was my second. You cannot have a sharp mattock, and I'm pretty sure song of sharpness doesn't apply even if you are singing it, which I wasn't. I feel bad that you didn't bring this one home, but I have been watching all of them do the uber melee thing and I'm always impressed. It's double tough. I've tried lots of strange combos but I doubt I could win without certain abilities from the non-wig trees.

Oh wait, it was a two part oney. I think it was my first attempt, or maybe second... I can't recall. But, it wasn't more than two attempts. It was the first time I used a mattock against Morgoth to knock the crown off, which works like a charm btw, so it was my 2nd Morgoth attempt... I think Elaith. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=12326

Don't worry about it, HM. I just need more input on how to get the silmarils out from the crown, but without sharpness sources...

Clarification - In my case: the 1st part, about knocking off the crown, was easy with Dramborleg. The 2nd part...ugh...

Oh, unfortunate! And a nice run.

It's definitely possible to get Silmarils out without any form of sharpness. Were you looking at the combat rolls window to see how close your weapons were coming? I'd guess either the dagger or (at Str 8) the mattock would have got a first Silmaril out in the first ten or so attempts.

On 17.3.2012 00:15 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Combat Rolls window was open. But, I wasn't paying attention to it at all during all attempts...

How can I tell, by looking at the combat rolls windows, if my chances (of getting the Silmaril out) are closer or not?

Thanks again!

On 17.3.2012 00:19 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Also, if I step away from the crown, say...after 3 failed attempts, does the attempt counter 'reset'?

On 17.3.2012 00:48 Scatha wrote:
To get a Silmaril you just need to do at least one point of damage to the crown. There isn't any kind of "counter".

On 17.3.2012 04:11 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
I see. Would increased DEX improve my chances of damaging the crown? Thanks!

Nice run...I've only tried it with a sharpness weapon myself...Sil is too risky to play around with if you ask me.
