Again, really very impressive. I see you have a higher hard investment in Smithing than your 1.0.1 characters did.

Let us know what you make of the changes overall when you're done! By the way, was this the first attempt or have you left some corpses in Angband?

On 1.3.2012 13:34 Psi wrote:
Will probably invest a little more before my masterpiece too, as each extra point is worth two.

I left some corpses at 50'. Once I've forged my initial gear, survivability increases dramatically. I also lost a Naugrim of Belegost somewhere. That build is a lot harder as my initial spend in smithing is not offset by the high dex of the Feanorians.

On 1.3.2012 13:45 Scatha wrote:
It's true that each point is worth two for masterpiece, but of course for earlier investments you get to use each point more times total. I think this works reasonably nicely in terms of not being clear when to invest.

An extra two points in Song would give you one extra point of Smithing (so less efficient than direct investment), but also help your Song of Sharpness later. I guess perhaps your Song is good enough already with your high Grace score even when not wearing smithing gear.

I can't wait to see the masterpiece.

Well I used all my remaining experience to give me 19 points invested in smithing. With my smithing kit, Aule and an enchanted forge I was able to create a 65 point difficulty artefact - I tell you those 650 turns taken smithing it go on a looooong time!

Having used a 3d6 Greatsword for nearly all the game until I found Anglachel, the change to my 3d8 cold branded, sharp Battle Axe is a massive step up! I had one charge against a sleeping monster at 11d14!

Now in the throne room, I have cleared all but a small section of the central area. It wasn't until I took on Gothmog that the tension was broken as everything else went down in one hit until that point. Gothmog would have too if it wasn't for the opportunist attack missing (and by the way I was asked if I wanted to attack on the opportunist blow which is surely a bug!).

Smaug, Ancalagon and Ungoliant have also fallen in the throne room, so just Morgoth and a few straggling orcs and trolls to go.

Hadn't realised that SoSharpness depended on song skill - thought it was another 50%. I assume this multiplies with the sharpness of the weapon, so Morgoth should get <25% protection.

Famous last words, but I don't think he stands much chance.

Try not to break it, I want to see that thing! And, why not a great axe? Wouldn't the extra dice be better, or is it too costly to upgrade a great axe as high as you've done your battleaxe? Anyway, yeah, could you make me one?!

It was a toss up, but two things swung it...

- great axe costs more and has a bigger to-hit
penalty
- the battle axe is more likely to critical (due to the smaller weight) overcoming the difference in dice

Forgot to sing Sharpness for the Morgoth fight, but he still only lasted 8 attacks. He never hit me either.

I tried to get the Silmarils out with Anglachel and SoSharpness but it broke on the second silmaril despite doing 29 damage...? I then used a mithril greatsword that was lying around (didn't want to risk my axe) and that got the other two out despite only doing 8 and 9 damage respectively. I don't understand why Anglachel shattered.

Since then I've replayed 950' a few times as I didn't see a single one of the "Entered..." vaults on the way down. I'm now taking the chance to mop up a few uniques etc. I've amassed some experience so it is tempting to go forging again, but I think I'll resist this time and leave this chap in his Morgoth kit.

Boom!

Eight attacks! Were those charges? Even then it seems a bit extreme ... you must have averaged about 70 damage per attack!

The weapon breaking is based closely on the story of Beren and Luthien and designed to give an exciting experience the first time or times you're in the throne room, as opposed to most things in the game which give interesting decisions on replaying even when you know the full mechanics. The exact mechanism might change at some point. At the moment, breaking is a replacement event for getting a Silmaril out, so will only occur on turns where you damage the crown.

On 1.3.2012 23:11 Psi wrote:
The eight attacks were all charge-knockback-opportunist so with a 3d14 branded attack (4d14) that gives a minimum of 12d14 I think which averages around 90 before protection is taken into account.

Had a little fun with Gorthaur and friends in the Chambers of Thu. Took him, 3 greater werewolves, an unrelenting horror and a red D all at the same time. Lost a few HP, but it was good fun.

On 2.3.2012 08:29 Psi wrote:
Just had a 4d14 opportunist attack against a Great cold-drake when I only succeeded on the hit roll by 2. That sounds like the cold brand applied to the cold-drake? The intial charge succeeded by 29 and hit for 10d14 when it should be 8d14. Doesn't seem right.

I'm out. The ascent was good fun just for taking on whole packs of bad guys who assemble by the stairs when you take your time on a level. Little danger though as only Ds tend to survive more than one hit.

As you can tell, smithing can still put together some nice gear (if you are prepared to forge some smithing kit first), but I think it is more the vanish, charge, knockback, opportunist combo that is so powerful.

With regards to smithing, Aule is just worth it for high grace smiths especially bearing in mind you probably want some song when working the crown - but I wouldn't invest anything more in song than that (particularly if you forge an artefact with SoSharpness...). The new smithing time is painful, but it does really make you weigh up what you make - so I'd say it achieves its aims.

So what does resist cold brands then? Just statues?

All Ws, sapphire and adamant serpents, Ringraukar, snow trolls? That's a guess from memory. It's the most expensive brand precisely because fewest things resist it (not counting lightning!).

By the way, danger can't get you the level 24s anymore. They're only found in their vaults or the throne room.

What do you make overall of the smithing changes?

On 2.3.2012 13:08 Psi wrote:
It is hard to say. I had to really push it to eek out every point - hence the -4 dex +4 smithing items! If you are prepared to go to those extremes then you can still make some really nice gear by the end. You may need to relax the 20% on minor slots and Aule penalty a little for the more casual smith builds - but you really need someone different to test that!
