Going really, really well. Haven't needed to shift over to using the Deathblad yet, but that's the plan for the throne room when I go in; it looks as though I have some turns I can yet afford to burn before that, though.

The only two possible abilities, I think, are Concentration (for the V figt) and maybe Sharpness; but I suspect that I may be better off just pumping melee even further.

That is CRAZY fast. Even with SoSharpness, Nargil is not a given for getting three silmarils (tried it twice - had it shatter after the first one once).

Agree with Psi, that speed is insane. How much were you killing at each depth?

I think Sharpness would give you a pretty good return for your experience investment for the fight against V. You need to hit by 6 for each extra critical, which means each point of melee gives you an extra 1 damage or so total. Sharpness would do better than halve his armour of 5d4, so add about 6 damage per hit. May not apply if you're already planning on singing Slaying for the fight.

On 29.2.2012 14:43 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Whoa! That's fast to be killing all those late game uniques. While heavy armor seems odd to you, that protection score would make me incredibly nervous. Do you just not get hit? I find +25 to be melee comfortable, but what's the evasion equivalent?

On 29.2.2012 14:49 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Oh wait, I didn't notice your stealth! They would first have to detect you, and then have to hit you. I guess those combined would make it pretty impossible to kill you, but still, do you ever get hit?! :)

On 29.2.2012 15:48 ewan wrote:
HM: basically not. If I don't get a one-hit kill or close to it, I flee around a corner and vanish, repeat if justified. Almost always the enemy will at least be reeling and hence I get to run as needed. So far anyway!

And yeah, this was the Sil equivalent of a rope-free bungee jump: until I got to 950 I was only killing stuff that I came across while looking for stairs down, basically. I found the stealth boots *really* early - I think at 100' - and it has honestly been startling that I've only felt in danger a couple of times; I don't really understand. The extra-sneaky mode works, I guess.

Biggest moment of fear was against Gorthaur, who managed to bite me even through a Dex potion - but it amuses me that just closing a door is generally enough to end the fight even if an end-game monster remains just on the other side :). With this little armour and hp, even a single bite is a big big deal - I have been avoiding dragons for once, in fear of breaths. Lungorthin was a risk but I got lucky on the initial hit there.

HM - I just don't get the tank playstyle, I guess, yet.

Was not planning on Slaying for the V fight (nor any other): with luck there will not be other monsters around. I think I am going to have to try to take him on in the throne room, though, rather than try for criticals after causing a curse, so I need to work out some way to deal with the Horrors; the answer may just have to be to ignore them :(.

On 29.2.2012 16:12 Psi wrote:
There weren't any unrelenting horrors when I did the throne room with Turgon. I killed one in a vault at 950' which proved to me that I could take them on, but that was the first and last one I saw.

Note that due to the non-monster experience sources and rapid decay from the monster ones you're only 10-15k behind a 'normal' combat character's experience at this point.

Certainly not feeling underpowered. Over-confident, more like!

Scatha: what's the bonus from concentration? Is it going to return to zero if I have a round not hitting V?

I almost feel as though I should start at 1000' by eating a herb of visions, in homage.. :)

If I remember correctly the bonus goes away if you take an action other than attacking V or passing (z). If he reels away and you wait for him to come back to you (or shoot him!), you should keep the bonus. Note that passing will help you get the focused attack bonus as well.

Thanks. OK, if I have the xp after getting the Evasion-DEX point, if possible, I'll go for it; but I think I may have spent the xp I would have been able to use for that. O well :).

It seems like you'll be getting so many criticals that your ring of damage would help you more than your ring of accuracy here.

That was right - I have enough xp for rapid attack, though, so going with that.

On 29.2.2012 20:11 ewan wrote:
I think that Scatha's advice was dead on: the damage ring probably helped. In any case: it *is* possible, and V is fallen once more. Illuvatar must be getting annoyed with us by now :).

I did a little math on focus and decided that it was not worthwhile to lose half the attack rounds pausing for focus; that seemed pretty clear-cut. So straight-up slog, although V once again never did anything other than reel around. Some pretty good dice during the fight, so there may have been some significant luck here.

For once, I owned a staff of Revelations, so the first few levels of fleeing went quickly; this should be OK to come in under the turn limit..

[I admit to almost wanting the ToME option at this point to turn evil: take the Crown for myself and tell those Trools "you work for *me* now, capisce?" :)]

*Turns to Psi and HM* - "Over to you, chaps."

OK, I am done with Sil for a bit - need to go do actual work! I think that for this approach, V is *right* on the edge of doable right now. I got lucky with the super deathblade, a +2 DEX ring, and plenty of supplies, and it felt as though even with quite good combat dice, I was racng to knock off he stars before I would hve had to pause for requaffing and regen would have out me in the hole. I would also have run out of Voice pretty soon. [To be fair, i think that i really messed up in not taking Concentration rather than a late melee point; and I was also explicitly going for speed, where it would be possible to accumulate a fair few more xp perhaps prior to going for V. On the other hand, could an Edain do this? Dodgy.]

Never wearing a Shadow cloak again; for most of the game I had a light radius of 5 and could seen even Ungoliant; huge difference against Dark enemies. The early stealth boots made the game; I never fought something I didn't want to, basically. And then I found Glamdring at 350 which is a superb weapon. Should have taken sprinting earlier if I could, but overall I think that the skill/ability progression was fine; I found some great armour and tried to wear it but the penalties to melee and stealth just turned me off too much.

In ending: Thanks again, half and Scatha: you've given me (and clearly others) a TON of fun and challenge here!

I had been planning one more bash at the comp after finishing my 1.0.2 take on the Uber-smith, but I've got nothing in the locker to compete with that turncount.

I must admit I did not expect to be outside of the top two after killing Morgoth...
