This is my first ever character dump and my first attempt at the competition. I hope he can make it!

By using the staff of self knowledge i have determined the garnet rings are rings of strength and the silver amulet is an amulet of grace (I can tell because of the sustain grace/sustain strength attributes). Does the fact that my stats didnt visibly improve mean they are +0 strength and +0 grace ( only providing the stat sustain?). In that case i might as well swap one of the strength rings for one of my perception rings. Or do i simply have a hidden bonus that the game does not display?

Btw does anyone know the smithing requirements for a ring of +1 dex? Also, is free action as important in sil as it is in vanilla angband?

On 27.2.2012 12:32 Scatha wrote:
That's right, they just sustain the stat (though you've usefully identified that flavour of ring/amulet, so you can look for ones granting +1).

I think a ring with +1 Dex would require a Smithing score of 15, plus would drain your Dex (but you have a potion to restore). There are some other useful combat rings available a little cheaper.

Free action gives you a +10 bonus to your roll against Webs (based on Strength to break out), being Slowed, and Entrancement (based on Will for these last two). All of those effects are bad, and could lead to death, but none of them are automatically fatal. For a regular style of character I think that the only resistance I'd regard as essential is a first source of fire resistance (and with careful play and enough Con, even that might not be crucial), but they are obviously useful.

@Scatha - so you can be slowed or entranced despite free action? I never realised that...

On 27.2.2012 13:04 Scatha wrote:
Psi: You can, but since it's rolled on opposed d10s a +10 bonus is a pretty big deal. If you also have a moderate Will investment this will often make you effectively immune.

Well I haven't any experience with posting dumps. This is an update of where my character is now but i'm not sure if it is going to update my dump or just make a new entry.

It is looking promising as he is starting to seem like he has the stats for winning. I am working on getting his stealth up now and that is having a great effect. I got motivated when I found those +3 stealth boots. Great boots! And just in time to replace my free action boots that were obsolete since I found my new cloak!

Oh, your first ever post, I thought you meant your first ever Sil post. Usually the dump just updates, but occasionally you might see some oddness if you try to post a character with some sort of experience point drain or try to upload a character with the exact same name. And, wow, your character is looking very nice! I envy your riposte and high evasion, I bet you get a lot of free attacks.

On 29.2.2012 15:00 Scatha wrote:
Your equipment is looking very nice here. The cloak was definitely a great find, apart from anything else saving you from devoting a ring slot to Frost (perhaps until you run into fire drakes). And Con 7 gives you a lot of breathing room.

How are you finding the stealth? Do you have goals in that direction?

On 1.3.2012 08:13 Ferian wrote:
Yay! I made it! That was my first win! I didn't have much luck when I tried fighting Morgoth and with my turn count it was clear I was not going to get a #1 ranking anyways, so I was happy enough to just get a win (especially since it was my first one). I only got one silmaril because it was pretty clear that I wasn't going to get more after anglichel broke. The crown has some insane armor... now I know why people always go for the song of sharpness. Does that stack with the sharpness on a weapon making it reduce armor by 75% instead of 50%? If so that would explain why people had such luck using anglichel + song of sharpness.

Well anyways, yay a win! Now I will have to go for a much faster dive and go for the kill maybe next time 8D

On 1.3.2012 08:23 Ferian wrote:
Yes, Riposte with high evasion is really cool, I was definitely getting lots of free attacks! I really liked the charge/opportunist combo as well. Sometimes I would charge a monster and they would attack me first so I would get a riposte, followed by charge, followed by opportunist strike when they were knocked back. Thats if they survived the first two hits which would not be often.

Stealth was ok, but I don't think I ever managed to get enough early enough to have alot of effect. I didn't get vanish until I was already on my way out, so I didn't really get to test it much. I think when I got it it did help alot with keeping morgoth from chasing me around everywhere though.

Congratulations!

Yes, sharp weapons stack multiplicatively with Song of Sharpness. The Song isn't a flat 50% reduction, though, but rather multiplies their armour value by 6/Song.

Good deal! I've yet to get a good riposte character off the ground and am glad to see that the idea is sound, even if I can't quite manage it myself.

On 1.3.2012 20:38 ewan wrote:
Riposte is neat, with the only downside being that it requires you risking being hit - good (even great) for your fighting style, I would have thought HM? I think it would fit best with a playstyle of high-Con, high-evasion, low-stealth and hence willingness to be surrounded.

Also, congrats :).
