Added power, vanish and flanking on my commute.

Wishlist contains artifice, knockback, rapid attack, opportunist, hardiness and maybe critical resistance.

I suspect I'll need to craft opportunist gloves, though saying that what are the prereqs for rapid attack? Are both of those on the assassin/subtlety path or maybe followthrough IIRC. I don't really want to waste XP on abilities I don't want.

Would like to find Nan as his sword would be nice at this point.

Over lunch I have descended to 850' but had a really close call on the way. I got all but surrounded by Cat Warriors, Cave Trolls and an Oathwraith. Thankfully a !Quickness, !Dexterity, 2 !Healing and the forgotten bonus that running past creatures also flanks them saw me nestle in the entrance to a blocked corridor so only three could attack me at once. I could then handle them!

The flip side of flanking was forgetting to turn it off whilst sneaking past a silent watcher... oops!

Picked up Artifice and Hardiness and made my usual thinking cap. However had to stick a Con penalty on it to afford it as danger is probably too dangerous now...

Stood here in my smithing gear at a forge at 900' - hard to know whether to forge a weapon now or try to hunt out one more (hopefully enchanted) forge. With masterpiece I can reach 43 points which could make me a 3d7 sharp greatsword - not sure if that is the best bet.

Was just taught a lesson by vampire lords and ancient green serpents - cost me a whole host of healing just to (narrowly) escape with my life. I'm not as powerful as I thought I was...

Wow, this is what you pull off with a low-grace House of Fingolfin character, after all the nerfs to Smithing. That is an amazing set of forging gear, though. Would just need Aule on an amulet to complete the set!

Interesting that so far you've made as many non-combat artefacts as combat ones. I'd guess that there are enough equipment slots that could stand to be upgraded, and enough turns left, to defer making your masterpiece. It is possible though that you might be best making a non-masterpiece weapon now, if that will do most to keep you effective at clearing things out to find more forges. You could then either upgrade it later or make a masterpiece for another slot, as seems best.

With rapid attack from your gloves I'd guess fewer dice would be a more effective weapon choice. Perhaps a Greatspear or Halberd? Or now there's no discount for two-handed weapons, you could take a one-hander and go with a shield, or Subtlety. Sharpness goes well with Rapid Attack, so unless you're going to pick up the song it seems a good property for whatever weapon you end up making.

Yeah, I've never found Turgon's hammer, nor Celimbror's gloves, and only one set of forging gloves in my very first char, I think. The masters of Angband have heard of Psi's rep and wish their forges to be well-used :).

Well time is now up and I am spending my last few moments at 950' clearing up the remaining nameless things for some extra experience.

Turns out I did craft my masterpiece too early so wasted two more forging opportunites, but I'd rather that than have missed out!

I have an xp pool of over 10000 to spend. I guess I want 5500 of that for song of sharpness - maybe critical resistance would be a good idea? Not sure if I should just be pumping melee or evasion though... I've not attempted the throne room without everything fleeing from Elbereth before.

I have found Elessar which is probably a better bet than my "BlessedRealm and could consider Maeglin for extra evasion (and stealth) and poison resistance - but not sure about losing rFear on Fingon as well as the Con boost.

** SPOILER ALERT **

Final battle account... I entered the throne room, mapped it with the last charge of _Revelation I had saved especially and then cleared the whole of the outside. I then crept into the middle chamber and started to pick things off. I got noticed a few times, but just nipped back out of sight and the few enemies that followed were easily dealt with.

Then it was time for Morgy! I buffed up and went to meet him. To my surprise he pummeled the ground from a few squares away messing up the terrain and injuring me. First time I've seen that as previous fights have seen him running scared from Elbereth. I tried going toe-to-toe and whilst it was damaging him, I ran into trouble once he had been backed up against a wall. The more the terrain became messed up the harder it got. I had also forgotten to start singing Sharpess at the beginning of the fight!

Then all of a sudden I started taking poison damage which really threw me! After a few turns with HP spiralling, I realised that Ungoliant must be hiding in the darkness. I fled to make everyone unwary again, swapped Elessar for "Blessed Realm and hunted down Ungoliant. After that it was V time again!

Having struggled to keep Morgoth at bay, I decided to take stunning at this point. I then stood a few squares away and shot Morgoth to wake him up. I then led him down the length of the chamber to give myself room to work with. Buffing up again I then knockback/charged him the length of it. It then got a bit messy as I kept knocking him over pits into a crevice I couldn't reach because of the pit! (Seems weird that monsters can cross pits...?!) He was down to his last star and I just couldn't finish him! I then buffed up again and the next hit brought his demise.

I then turned RapidAttack off to get the Silmarils out. My Hador's House sword shattered early, but 'Ouch' held together to prise all three from the crown.

But in particular, yes, the score is not meant to be a meaningful number, just something to sort by.

Yes, it is slightly weird that monsters can cross pits; pits are treated as (un-disarmable) traps. This may change in a future version, but probably not before half and I work out rules for chasms, which are the main planned dungeon feature, since there may be some elegant way to combine the rules for the two.

Since your weapon was already sharp, I wonder whether Slaying might have been even more effective than Sharpness for you for the big fight. Would have required you to have a host of easy enemies on hand to clean up and build up your bonus, so also more hassle.

*Bows*

Tremendous. And the 'light heavy' weapon must have made the knockback criticals work exceptionally well - a bonus from smithing (I assume that 'Ouch' was the masterpiece and the cost was so high to get the weight down?).

Also, of course, damn, I thought I might win this :) but mostly just kudos - very cool.

Thanks guys!

@Scatha - Sharp weapons and SongOfSharpness stack for 75% reduction in protection don't they? I wanted every advantage I could to make sure I crossed the knockback threshhold as often as possible (particularly if I hadn't charged as you can't waste turns stepping away from Morgoth). Also it was just him and me - I cleared the throneroom before taking him on (at least I thought I had but for Ungoliant in the shadows!), so SongOfSlaying was redundant. I put this build together after reading that opportunist kicks in after a knockback (which it certainly seems to) - is that intentional? Therefore if I charge I usually get a knockback which triggers an opportunist hit. If I fail to get the knockback then I get the rapid attack hit, which can also lead to a knockback and opportunist hit.

@ewan - Ouch was the masterpiece, but on the contrary I actually increased the weight to bring the knockback damage threshhold a couple of points lower. Admittedly it was only from 4.5lbs to 5lbs - as I still wanted to balance it with the chance of criticals. The high cost is down to increasing the damage sides by 2. A battle axe is 3 difficulty, the weight increase was 1 (maybe 2) and the remaining 37/38 cost was split pretty much 2/3 for the sides increase and 1/3 for the sharpness.

@HM - you joke, but it could yet be too slow for this comp...
