I thought I'd share my starting experiences, since I have an exciting near-death story already (I should have grabbed a screenshot!).

At around 300ft, my equipment was similar to currently except I had no body armour and was wearing a cursed Ring of Strength -1 (and consequently wielding my shortsword of brilliance). This was also before I had sprinting. Having explored a little of the level, I entered a room and shortly after a contingent of orc archers entered on the other side and began to hail me with arrows. Not to worry; I retreated back into the corridor I had come from, but found a Mewlip blocking the way. I was in the doorway. I tried to kill the Mewlip to make good my escape, but before I had finished this some orc warriors appeared. Trapped between a rock and a hard place! Three of them could attack me at once. They approached, and I hoped to finish the Mewlip quickly. When they were just getting close, it let out a terrible cry, and I quailed in horror.

At this point I was partly injured, close to surrounded, and afraid. I had an unidentified herb and several unidentified potions (but no orcish liquor). I tried the herb, hoping for Terror or (better) Rage. It turned out to be rage, and I was back in the combat. I finished the orc warriors, my health dropping to a precarious 2, but the mewlip was still alive and the arrows coming in. I decided to run the other way, at the orc archers, scattering them, and then through. Arrows struck me but glanced off my shield or helm. I dashed for a doorway into a short corridor, and closed it, but the Mewlip was at my heels. Low on health, but with only the unknown beyond the far door, I had to fight. It was a close, bitter fight, but I slew the horror, and closed the door. Injured though I was, the orc archers were too cowardly to open the door and face an elf-lord at close quarters. And so I rested, regaining my strength until I could face them again.

OK, I'll claim first death in the competition. I got caught in a room with archers on either side. I was busy trying to deal with a Sulraukar (the first I'd met). I could have retreated a bit earlier in one direction, towards the orc archers (rather than the easterlings), but an orc captain had left my favourite sword (a (+1,2d5), 2lb longsword) lying on the ground, and I was loathe to even risk being pushed away from it.

I should have used quickness/rage/dex earlier in this fight.

Character-wise, I was fighting with Subtlety and was aiming for a deadly deathblade as a weapon in the long term, with a fair Song of Slaying (woven with Sharpness?) to help keep the foes dying quickly.
