Ouch, that spider bite hurt! It took me for 25pts of damage, which I wasn't expecting. Of course, I couldn't see it, but I was still surprised. I've mostly been playing silly challenge characters like this one, and only half-playing. Sil, it turns out, makes for a really good coffee break game. I just churn out something ridiculous and play for maybe an hour, or much less, and have a good bit of fun. Granted, a 1 hour coffee break is pretty long, but sometimes I get lucky. I've been messing around with melee only, which dies pretty quick, no abilities, which I've gotten to about 600' a few times and melee/evasion only, armorless, etc... Just weird ideas on the warrior thing.

It did get a double critical here, which explains some of the high damage. I tend to run away from shadow spiders unless I can see them ...

I'm interested to hear how you get on with these different character types. I'd be surprised if the game wasn't winnable without abilities -- we certainly beat it before they were introduced and I don't think it's become too much harder since then.

I can see ability-less as winnable, certainly. I think my characters that did well with this, then died, were pushing too fast... or did not have good items, which probably amounts to the same thing. Melee only seems like it ought to work, but just doesn't. What I *really* need to do is step out of my comfort zone and play something other than a ROG, ME WARRIOR, YOU LETTER, I KILL, character. But, I never do that. Well, pretty much never. I got a Hador character to 700' using my style and he looked pretty good. I forget what killed him, I think cats, or f's, or whatever.

700' would be the best House of Hador character on the ladder; nice.

The problem with melee only is that too many enemies can come at you at once, so even though you kill things very efficiently you can't avoid being attacked.

I think the easiest variation from straight up fighter is to have a fighter with a little bit of stealth (and probably Disguise). This just lets you choose fights, or just timing for fights, a bit more, stops half the level descending on you at once, and often lets you initiate combat with a really good hit because the opponent is unaware. You still get to kill all the letters. ;)

How about warrior with Song of Slaying? That sounds like HM's style -- he likes to talk to things while he kills them.
