Scariest moment was being chased by a cat unique and his entourage and then getting stuck in a room with one exit by a Grotesque. I killed the cats already in the room whist the unique and friends were trapped behind the Grotesque. I thought it was game over as the Grotesque would shred me, but a lap of the room revealed a secret door! Phew.

I am now crying out for some forges! Only seen a handful and at least two were lost to false floors around the '0'. I've got the smithing hammer and Maeglin's armour - everything but a forge! Haven't seen a _Revelations all game which is making it tricky and time is fast running out!

I did however find Ringil! Is that better than my 1d8 shortsword for an assassin?

Finally found a _Revelations... spotted Orodruth... charged in to start forging and got overwhelmed by Drauglin and friends... somehow escaped by taking Elbereth and healing almost every turn... took the Werewolves one at a time... and now I can't forge because there's a Silent Watcher sitting there! What do I do?

I'm thinking if only I hadn't invested my points in grace and masterpiece then I could have gone for song of sharpness and maybe get through its defence? I was hoping it would stay asleep whilst I forged but no such luck (thought somehow I did manage 20 turns?).

Wow. Some fabulous kit there. Ringil as a 2lb sword is neat, and the cold brand might just make it better than a deathblade or whatever, though it will be close - depends how strong criticals you're getting.

Well, cool character, and fun stories -- thanks for sharing.

As far as I know, this is the first time anyone has found Ringil in Sil. Interesting that you tended to prefer not to use it! I had been worried about it being a bit too good. To be fair that is a really gorgeous assassin's weapon you've forged. Did you switch to Ringil when (if?) you engaged in open combat?

Were you building up your Strength (e.g. on your gloves) with a plan to get rapid attack later? Or just for switch weapons? It doesn't seem to have been doing much for you at this point.

Regarding Gothmog, yes, you were unlucky that he managed to attack you twice (getting a critical once). Confusion works the same as for the player -- he will try to move into you, and if he succeeds will get a normal attack, but he has a chance of moving in another direction.

I think you may have made a couple of mistakes in fighting Gothmog, though. As you say, attacking the turn after he hit you wasn't the best move (perhaps just running to try to Vanish might have been?). But even before that I notice that he got the first move after your assassination attempt. I think this means you were using Stealth mode. This gives you a bonus to your assassination score but it does mean that you give up the next turn of action. I'm not sure whether it's best to use it in such cases, but I tend to try to play things safe and not use it.

On 14.2.2012 18:48 Psi wrote:
I never actually equipped Ringil, never mind hit anything with it! If anything survived my first hit (or sometimes second whilst reeling), then I'd vanish and repeat.

Don't remember being in stealth mode, but maybe I was as I do use it. Why wouldn't Gothmog get the next move after I hit him though anyway as we are both the same speed? Interesting point about stealth mode though, I assumed you would just break out of stealth mode in that situation and hence not lose a turn...?

The gloves were forged with the idea of going rapid attack as you say. Does the second attack also get the assassination bonus or does the monster become aware of you after the first blow?

On 14.2.2012 18:54 Scatha wrote:
Currently you get the assassination bonus (and the monster's evasion is low, etc.) for both attacks, but we're thinking of changing that.

Normally when a monster notices you it uses its turn to wake up so you get the next real move. If you're in Stealth mode then your previous action (stabbing) was slow, which means it takes up two turns. So you effectively skip the first turn after it wakes, and it gets the first move. By that point you're no longer in Stealth mode so operating at normal speed. We think this behaviour works pretty well. We certainly wouldn't want it to be the case that it's always correct to switch into stealth mode to assassinate (you do get the +5 bonus to your attack).

Great work there! I've never found Ringil in Sil. It is quite insanely powerful, but probably not as good for you as your own Artefact sword. It is roughly equivalent to some kind of amazing greatsword with +3 to hit, +2 dex, cold resistance, light, does better critical hits, and only requires one hand to wield.

That said, it might not have given an elevenfold critical like you got there against Gothmog (presumably for 12d12 damage!). I do apologise for the overuse of exclamation marks for assassins, but they seemed the simplest way to convey the info in text. I hadn't imagined there would be 11 in a row (!).

Sorry to hear you failed near the final hurdle, but perhaps good to know that it is not trivial for you yet!

I'm a bit confused about your encounter with the Grotesque -- why did you think it would hurt you a lot in combat? Have you ever seen one attack you?
