Very annoying death. Ran from one invisible R into another by the looks of it. No idea where it was so I started Elbereth and tried the _Slumber. What do I need to see one of those things? Really promising smith assassin up until that point...

Just realised I forgot to take inner light. Argh - I bet that would have done it...

You ran into a Gwathrauko, which is basically a 'darkness'-rauko. Inner Light or moving into a lit room would have helped expose this monster.

Elbereth might have worked, but I'd guess Vanish and some corners would have been your best chance to escape. Staves use your Will to roll, so you didn't have great odds at getting it off your tail that way (and much worse while singing).

If you wanted to fight it, Inner Light would have been enough in this case (with Keen Senses). Song of the Trees would have given you plenty. Note that sometimes you meet them in multiples, and then it can be very hard to overcome the darkness. Sometimes just running away is the best plan!

I had been running from one, which I had seen in a lit room, unfortunately I then ran into another which I didn't see. As I couldn't see it I assumed there was more than one, so I didn't know where to run, which is why I tried Elbereth. I've always taken inner light early before, just forgot about it this time.

Another thought -- switching to Dramborleg would also have let you see it, as it would be glowing for having demons nearby.

I'm interested to see that in spite of having Assassination and high stealth, you don't have anything approaching what I think of as a classic assassin's weapon: light, with a large single die for damage. How good were your attacks against unwary/sleeping foes? Or was the stealth mostly to let you choose your engagements?

How do you make a cloak at a forge (or was it really a sewing machine)?

@Scatha - I found the easiest way to build this character was by transition. I started her as a high protection melee character and gradually turned her into an assassin. I never found a good (enough) assassin's weapon. I did try to take out a deathblade but had to flee from it. The longsword was good enough to one shot a lot of sleeping foes. I had just got comfortable when my earlier oversight caught up with me...
