But although the 1d9 is nice, I suspect that Amrod will be the primary weapon for a bit. Hmm. This would be good for two-weapon fighting if it were not going to gimp Subtlety, on which I rely; o well.
Some of the criticals are great: serpents going down to a single 9d8 blow, for instance! Would be nice to get some relevant stat boosts at some point soon, but going OK thus far againa... will try to avoid getting surrounded this time :(.

It's particularly true against sleeping rather than unwary enemies.
Against that, Stealth and Perception are useful beyond adding to your to-hit, the Free Action is good, and having a lighter weapon will help you to inflict more Cruel Blows in regular combat. I'm not sure which weapon is the better standardly ...
Good work ambushing the deathblade, by the way!
On 6.2.2012 17:28 ewan wrote: Oathwraiths suck. The 'Resist criticals' pretty much makes them impossible for this char.

Costs 3 evasion *and* 3 stealth, but 7 extra health and rFear. That last probably not a big deal; I suspect that the answer is no on balance, but it pains me not to do so!
And of course just after I decided to wear a Warmth ring permanently and dropped one of my evasion rings, Gilim also drops this cloak of warmth. So I need another rign now, please..
On 6.2.2012 18:10 Scatha wrote: It's generally monsters without obvious flesh which are resistant to criticals (in particular all of the undead; some of the Raukar; deathblades; and the statues are immune). In particular, Morgoth is perfectly succeptible to them.
You only get half the normal number of criticals against enemies who resist them. You can always carry a big switch weapon for fighting such opponents (this is what I normally do), and avoid fighting them or quaff a Potion of Strength if they're still problematic.
On 6.2.2012 18:12 Scatha wrote: I can't see the armour that you're comparing Fingon's corslet to (it's probably on the ground). My guess is that you want the lighter armour ... it's possible you should keep the mail to switch into for open combat, but this depends a bit on what your approach to open combat is.
On 6.2.2012 18:19 ewan wrote: I'm toting the corslet; the alternative is nothing :).
If Morgoth takes crits, I'm going to go for him if I get there..
..and yeah, I can imagine cases where I might want to put on the mailshirt for a second once I know that I am planning to fight.
Right now I'm being selective *but* only a little so - skipping oathwraiths by getting out of sight at which point they seem to become unwary very fast; and fighting colddrakes only if they're alone. The advice to use the deathblade for initial strikes was correct, I think: many enemies get no return hits because they're hit so hard and writhing in pain.
I am almost done with abilities, I suspect. Maybe sprinting, and the DEX point if I can get up to 20 in evasion; otherwise just melee, evasion, and perhaps a bit of stealth if I start to need it again.

On 6.2.2012 19:36 ewan wrote: Reading the manual, I don't get how I can be achieving such criticals. Let's assume that I 'roll' a 20: my attack score is a max of 49 (right?) and a sleeping monster is a min of -4; so a max gap of 53. (7+weapon weight) is ~9, so the max multiple of 9 I can get is 5, for a hit of 6d11 - what am I missing here? :)
Hang on. Aha! Now maybe I understand what finess and subtlety are doing? They're lowering the (7+x) number, correct? So it's down to 6, and I can get 8 or 9 extra dice? OK.
AND I get a bonus from stealth by using assassination - ok, that's a +21 right there. And wait! - I should pause one turn before such stabs, to take advamntage of focussed attacks.
Cool. Neat to see system in action and take the time to work it through.
On 6.2.2012 19:40 Scatha wrote: A spare deathblade isn't necessarily a bad idea. Also note that you can always find a deathblade with a bigger to-hit bonus! But on the other hand they will be dangerous opponents, so be careful.
I doubt that you're going to have much of a chance of killing V; you only get such extreme criticals when your foe hasn't noticed you, and he'll see you after the first hit. You could Vanish, of course, but he'll regenerate from a hit like that in about four turns. And I'll point out that there's a prize beyond his head in the picture: you could be the first combatant winner from the Edain.
On 6.2.2012 19:56 Scatha wrote: Sounds like you've got the hang of the workings of the critical system. Subtlety (together with Finesse) reduces the width for each critical to (4+weapon weight), so 6.3 for the deathblade (can get down to around 5 for a shortsword).
On 6.2.2012 20:04 ewan wrote: Or 4.8 for Angrist. 5.9 for the current deathblade. But I go from d11 to d7, which is a big loss. Even if I gain a couple extra sides, something like e.g. 8d7 < 6d11 so the deathblade is better.
HOW fast does V regenerate? Holy cow. He'll be confused (assuming that he feels pain) and yeah, I was thinking I would vanish, but if he's going to be back at full strength that fast it may not fly. Too bad.
On 6.2.2012 20:19 ewan wrote: Looks as though the max (which I just hit) right now is 11d10. Which is fun indeed, but sounds as though would only scratch V.

I'll take one more crack after I clear, with luck, the entrance gates, but much less confident now. And the wasted xp on knock-back... grr.
ALSO I realised that I should have saved xp for Song of Sharpness to get the third Silmaril.
O well. If I get through this one as a proof of principle, I might take a crack at a STR-DEX combo and be able to use a bigger weapon at the end. Anyway, onward..

On 7.2.2012 15:53 ewan wrote: Thanks. I agree that the late game is the easiest - almost nothing survived being hit while asleep. The most dangerous foes were:
(i) dark-cloaked enemies; these often needed careful management because I think their auras combine, so fighting them in the open would have been suicide. [Yet another regret - I should have wielded a Sil and gone to see what it was over there on the right of the Throneroom]
(ii) very alert enemies such as cat assasins; especially those which te ded to move around. I should - yes, yes, ANOTHER thing I did wrong - have turned off Opportunist in some cases, because one would move away from me, get hit with an unfocussed attack, not die, and then raise the alarm.
Vampire lords seem to be both of these and were very dangerous.
Game plan for Round 2, Son of Margor:
* Invest in Sharpness Song if needed
* Try the weapon-shattering 'cheat' if needed
* Limit perception to 7 points (for Lore-Master) and skip Will, narrowing down to ONLY melee/evasion/stealth
* Try to find more STR items! [There is, I think, a really powerful smithing-stealth char possible, using smithing to boost STR and going assassin rather than warrior.]

A couple of comments on your plans:
- Without Will you might find dragons a bit too dangerous to be worth taking on. They have enough health that they might not go down in one hit, and they have various mesmerising abilities; neither Confusion nor Entrancement would guarantee your death, but they'd be risky. I'd guess you could normally kill dragons, but it depends on how safe you want to be.
- Extra Strength wouldn't have been doing anything for your combat here (some minor effects: increasing carrying capacity, helping you break free of webs, resisting disarming). You only get strength bonuses to damage up to the weight of your weapon in pounds (or weight/1.5 for two-handed weapons).
On 7.2.2012 19:19 ewan wrote: Hmm. First, thanks for the info :). The dragon risk I *might* take - even if they're not dead in one blow they tend to be reeling until death. [I did have several problems with silent wtchers and the like causing me to be afraid even with fear resistance.]
The damage cap effect is going to be a challenge, though. Given that damage is ~# dice * half of die size, the tradeoff works in favour of getting more dice and hence a focus on criticals *should* be OK (i.e. sticking with light weapons rather thantrying for a heavier weapon + more strength), but it's entirely possible that I may be unable to do enough damage output to combat V's regeneration. I'm guessing that this would not bother you! Other suggestions welcome..

I'm planning to get them anyway; on ther other hand, that's going to be just one more potion that I have to keep up on, and one of the big problems w/ V is that he takes long enough I have to re-quaff, and hence he gets free turns of regeneration.
OK, OK, this may all be futile :).
On 7.2.2012 19:47 Scatha wrote: I don't know whether you have any real chance of success (I'd be quite happy if you don't, but even then I couldn't help but cheer on your heroic if ultimately futile attempt!), but here are my thoughts on things which might help a little:
I was actually surprised to see you leave Aeglos behind, by the way. Because of the Cold branding and large single die I think that might have been your best weapon for open combat, in spite of not having Subtlety apply. (Not certain about that, as I just made a rough estimate, and it would have been worse at getting cruel blows.)
Song of Sharpness would help a bit since Morgoth has good armour. Song of Slaying might not be great for that fight as if you're not killing things then the bonus fades away. Rapid attack could help you too -- particularly good if you have Song of Sharpness going, and it would let you use the excess Strength you're so keen on acquiring! :)

OK, Sharpness is a go. Rapid Attack I guess I can try to acquire and turn off if not helping - my thinking was that it would lower crits too much. How much does V regenerate, anyway?
