In need of advice here.

In my quest to collect a winner of each of the Children of Iluvatar (I'm complete rubbish at fighting and smithing, so methinks Naugrim is going to be difficult, but I digress...) I was going to make this guy a non-singing archer (call it a "gentle introduction" to killing things).

The plan was to go for singing if he lives to 900'-950'...But now that it comes down to it, I'm really not sure if that's a good idea. I think wargs are occasionally spotting me, and I'm really tempted to just go for my usual singing/stealth package.

Penny for your thoughts?

Well, nice going. I'm impressed that you were managing to kill such deep enemies with just seven points in archery (and seven in evasion). Belthronding was obviously a good find here.

I assume you put Ungoliant and Morgoth to sleep rather than making a battleground at 1000'?

By the way, the Naugrim weren't counted among the Children of Iluvatar -- so (if sticking to the letter) this may be an easier task than you'd realised!

Egads, you're right! Well, I might have to just let the Children of Aule slide along a bit, then...

Yeah, the idea behind combining stealth, sprinting, and archery is so that I don't have to fight things I don't want to...So re: seven points in evasion, they rarely got used (except for sprinting). I focused on high-value, low-health targets (Lore-Master helps in target selection). If they're slow, so much the better for picking them off with relative ease (if there's cover).

And of course slaying uniques gets a sexy entry in the notes page, so that's tempting...Basically, he was a sniper (or a submarine).

Perhaps the error with Smaug was that there was no cover and I was depending on Lorien to send him back to his treasure pile.

Oh, and yes, I put Ungoliant and Morgoth to sleep. Woke Ungoliant back up, though. Briefly.

Question for those who know: upon thinking about it, it seems that Shadow Cloaks are worse than Cloaks of Stealth (because they decrease your light radius). Am I missing something here? I think I passed up a Cloak of Stealth at some point in favor of the Shadow Cloak, but upon reflection that seems like a silly idea. Thoughts?

I did guess your evasion was really for Sprinting (by the endgame a mere seven points will mean many enemies would hit for a lot of damage, so it's a sign you're intending not to let them attack you in melee).

It seems that part of the problem with Smaug is that without more health or fire resistance, you couldn't safely afford to risk letting him get even one turn.

For pure Stealth characters who aren't interested in the Evasion bonus, I think it's true that an appropriate Cloak of Stealth could be better than a Shadow Cloak. However, you can also find Shadow Cloaks of Stealth ...

Upon reflection, I concur with your assessment. Actually, I lucked out--this was in fact round two between me and old (well, young) Smaug. I survived round one...Round two, not so much. In retrospect, I should have been wearing my fire resist gear (cf. Shield of Angrod, Greaves of Orodreth), which would have cut damage by 3/4 or so?

Thanks for the tips on the Shadow Cloaks...Excellent points.

I just had another one like this, not nearly as good game-wise as I wasn't having very good luck with dungeon levels, but she was at 800' and got busted in a vault of some kind and squashed like an insect. Whoops.

With N sources of fire resistance the damage is reduced to 1/(1+N) of what it would normally be (for breath weapons; melee attacks work differently).

And yes, I hadn't noticed those items, but they would quite likely have saved you from the fire breath. Actually it may have been foolhardy to try to deal with Smaug even with those equipped, as the worm is not without other tricks. With your low Will he might have entranced you, which could have been the end ...

Ah, that's right, it's 1/(n+1), not 1/(2^n)...

Entrancement...*Shudder*.

It seems clear to me that the moral of this story is "let sleeping dragons lie". Or at least don't poke them.

As for sleeping spiders, only poke the lazy ones...?

Yes, dragons are very nasty. They are the closest thing in Sil to the insta-death breathing creatures of Angband.
