Still trying with Edain; current focus is on evasion. This guy is the best thus far, although the minimum-depth effects are pushing her downward faster than desired: so far the evasion is enough to allow her to go toe-to-toe with enemies even when they're awake. Just found Orcrist which will help that, too. At some point soon I am going to need to branch out; thinking of Song perhaps?

An alternative, given the nice gloves, is to try my first archer character. Not sure yet.

Mostly still fine, but a new-to-me worry: I have not found a *single* food item all game, and am now hungry. I would really hate for this to end in starvation :(.

Nice take on the Edain! Interesting that People of Haleth are a plausible best for combat because of the Dex bonus, despite lacking the Melee or Evasion affinity of the other Houses.

You have a lot of experience saved here. You could always take Mind over Body if the food situation is dire, although it hurts to have to do that with one of the afterborn; there's so much less of a comfort zone. I don't know if this is the right approach or not.

You might want to consider Vanish, which together with Sprinting can do a lot to get you out of fights you don't want to have. Listen is also good at letting you avoid them in the first place. But I'm really just telling you the route I've been taking!

I'd guess that this is not the right moment to branch into archery, but I'd love to be proved wrong. In that direction, note that having a longbow equipped gives you [-1] to evasion; they're more of a tool for serious archers (or a swap item).

Anyhow, good going here, and good luck going forwards!

Ah - right, I'd missed the longbow's -1 penalty; thanks.

And yes, if I am reduced to eating every Herb then MoB will become the only alternative to death, I fear. Hasn't been an issue in any previous char, all of whom have found tons of food; just random, I guess.

{Actually, looks as though I played a little more and ended up needing to spend the 1100xp on MoB; hope it suffices..}

OK, I need advice. Entered a small vault, found a nice shadow cloak, turned around, killed a Kemenrauko that was following me...which made a pile of rubble sealing me into the vault. Potions of strength don't help me to clear the rubble - am I doomed now?

Even worse, I know that there are more Kemenrauko outside the vault, but I expect that I am now too stealthy for them to hear me and come on in (especially given that sound is blocked by rubble!)

On 3.2.2012 18:42 Scatha wrote:
Oh no, this isn't much fun. You are in trouble (yes, a staff of earthquakes might have helped, as would a shovel or trumpet of blasting, or just being really really careful about not killing Kemenraukar in awkward spots).

I had an elaborate scheme around turning off vanish and making as much noise as possible, but then I remembered that sound doesn't travel through rubble at all, so unless there are secret doors from the vault they won't hear you at all -- and I guess you've checked for these with the Staff. However they do wander randomly, so they might just happen to go past if you have enough food. Of course this would be a pretty severe handicap in terms of the forced descent even if you survived, but it's better than nothing.

Well, what a way to go. Trapped in the deep places of the earth, in the heart of Angband, hoping against hope for rescue from some unlikely source. I wanted to add: wondering whether your food would give out before or after your light did, but I checked and saw you had a Feanorian lamp. There's less poetry in it.

On 3.2.2012 18:44 ewan wrote:
One might find poetry in the fact that the first monster I encountered moving back from the sealing-in rubble was a grotesque, and now I am sealed in on both sides..

Argh.

And, Oh NO! - I just realised that in the vault there are stairs - but they're past the now-sealed grotesque point!

Double argh.

Oh, this is dramatic: I 'hear grinding noises.' Is there yet hope?!

On 3.2.2012 19:20 ewan wrote:
YES! Another grotesque just entered!

OK, I am going to be very careful about where I kill this one!!

On 3.2.2012 19:24 ewan wrote:
Aha - and, it's now clear that the grotesque must have come up the stairs and was *not* the rock-eating thing: that was a nether worm mass, I think - the grotesque just came though the passge once opened.

Whatever :) I am free. Of course now I will die stupidly in the next few turns..

On 3.2.2012 20:33 ewan wrote:
...yep. Boy am I mad at myself now: YASD, and this was by *far* my best Edain to date. Same flaw in my play: not taking into account the high variance in combat, assuming I can't die from one hit, and holding down attack-arrow...

...stupid Ewan :(.

Anyway, I think that this build can win if it gets a competent player :) and the almost-starvation was entertaining in a macabre way, but boy am I pissed now :(.

Tevildo dropped Hurin? Grr. And yeah, 6k unspent xp..

On 4.2.2012 00:33 Scatha wrote:
Having a critical inflicted on you when you have [+29] evasion is certainly unlucky, but as you say combat is dangerous because of the variance. I think that reducing that effect is one of the major benefits of a high Con as part of your defences at expense of some evasion/protection, but with the Edain, as here, you just have to plan around it.

One observation about my play with the Edain, or weaker characters generally, is I'm less willing to stockpile experience nebulously. I tend to have a plan for where I want the experience next and invest as I get it. Sometimes it won't be helpful until you reach a threshold to be able to afford an ability or similar, and it's worth holding onto it while you wait, but I think with these tight builds, if you have a good idea of what you want then the marginal extra safety of a point or two in key skills earlier probably outweighs the flexibility of delay.

Overall it seemed this worked very well! To what extent were you generally fighting everything, or just picking your fights and engaging safer enemies? Now you've got the build and play style down, I'm sure you'll be back in the depths before too many corpses pile up.

On 4.2.2012 00:50 ewan wrote:
Yes, worked well: the balance between feeling impervious and needing to pick fights started to shift towards the latter at maybe 650-700'. And yes, the battle to avenge this death has begun already.

I don't think that I understand all of the ability options yet to plan mx xp out - I keep investing in both Assassination and Charge, for instance, which you *told* me is a waste... duh.

On 4.2.2012 01:14 Scatha wrote:
It's not necessarily bad to get both! Sure, they don't work together, but they are useful in slightly different situations.

(Not that I'm saying you _should_ get both, but I don't think it's completely obvious. They're both pretty good.)

On 4.2.2012 03:40 ewan wrote:
Unconvinced: if an enemy is unwary, I should always be able to get a charge in. So Assassination seems like a waste of points as a crutch to make the early game easier; I should probably skip it.

On 4.2.2012 11:28 Scatha wrote:
Hmm. I think it should be the case that for stealthy characters against unwary enemies, assassination with a light weapon does significantly more damage than charge with a heavy one. I'll investigate this. If it's not true, it may be another sign that we should tone Charge back a little.

On 4.2.2012 14:54 ewan wrote:
Now that's interesting. I had not considered - but would be *delighted by* - th possibility that there's some bonus for using a dagger, deathblade or whatever as an assassin-type. How does that work?

On 4.2.2012 16:03 Scatha wrote:
This should be a natural consequence of the critical hit system (you can read about this in the manual if you've not done so). Light weapons with one large damage die (shortswords, deathblades, spears) are particularly good for getting criticals, and assassinate lets you hit by a lot for great criticals. I've done as much as 10d8 against sleeping enemies by 300ft or so with my shortsword-wielding Edain (6d8 perhaps more typical -- this is with Finesse and Subtlety, so with a 1lb weapon getting an extra damage die for every 5 I hit by).

On 4.2.2012 16:13 ewan wrote:
OK; I'm going to retune with this in mind. Thanks.
