Came to closer to death than Ephel ever came when one of those fiery Rs took me down to 1 health... Increased song and used my last non-Orcish Liquor potion to save myself!
Out of _Revelations so forge hunting is going to be more troublesome this time around.

Remember to pick up any staves of treasures you find -- they don't directly find forges for you, but they can find staves of revelations or recharging.

On my commute, I offed Maeglin, so now with all my forging gear on, I've already got a higher smithing score than Ephel managed. Stumbled into a 4 charge forge, so manufactured a +3 Dex ring and a nice pair of speed boots. Haven't put exchange places on them this time, as I've never used that ability yet.
Had one close call against a big, red S. Realised half a level later that I was still wearing my thinking cap, so had been missing my second layer of rFire... d'oh!
Accidentally (via flanking) took on a Grotesque for the first time. Suffice to say, I'm no longer scared of them following me around!
Just spotted in my notes that I entered the Cat Fortress! That is news to me. I saw a load of cats using my _Foes, but I never reached them. I did come to a room nearby which was empty but for two Silent Watchers against the rear wall, but having been knocked out by them, I fled.
On 3.2.2012 12:11 Scatha wrote: Maeglin was a fortunate find!
Glend and Charge is a good combination for clearing out statues.
Yeah, that room with the two Silent Watchers is one of the antechambers of the Cat Fortress.
On 3.2.2012 12:25 Psi wrote: The hard decision now is when to take and create my masterpiece as it has to be my last forging attempt. In an ideal world I'd make artefacts for each remaining slot, but the chances of finding that many forges are slim to say the least. It is going to be a tough call when to say enough is enough - it would be horrible to run out of levels before I have made it!
On 3.2.2012 14:50 Psi wrote: Finally found a _Recharging once my _Revelations had been burnt up - so no easy way to go forge hunting for me! Thankfully I found a couple of forges so melted down my mithril corslet to make a replacement and then forged gloves of +4 smithing with weaponsmith and masterpiece at the other in the hope of finding at least one more...
...which I did at 950'. It was tempting to craft some jewelry, but with time running out I couldn't risk it, so I spent 58 points crafting a rapid attack Halberd of fun.
The Lair of the Greedy Worm (or something like that) is on this level, so I may go and practice on Glaurung and Smaug before descending. Last time I walked by, I got instantly confused so it maybe worth upping Will first. I've also just taken Woven themes and Mastery, so will try for an Elbereth/Mastery concoction - everything tries to flee but can't in theory. Should be interesting...
On 3.2.2012 18:36 Psi wrote: Had time for one last go at 950' and found another forge. I invested experience back into smithing to make another masterpiece - a nice ring to keep HM happy.
Did the throne room with Elbereth and Mastery. Not sure the latter had any effect on Morgoth but Elbereth certainly did! I chased him around until he perished and then mopped up the stragglers.
Tried the crown with Nargil and SoSharpness, but it broke after the first silmaril. Thankfully Glend got the other two out so I didn't have to risk my halberd.
Might take a leisurely stroll back to the surface looking out for the unique forge and anything else I missed on the way down...

Anyhow, congratulations on breaking the game -- again! :)
(It was very impressive, and you can be sure we'll be doing a little rebalancing in light of this; we don't want to destroy the strategy but it looks like it is a little bit too effective at present.)
On 3.2.2012 20:13 Psi wrote: I thought you might ;)
It was good fun setting it up, but it did make the throne room somewhat trivial - apart from the odd breath from Ancalagon, there was little danger. Just spotted in the notes that I killed Gorthaur there too - I didn't even notice him!

What changes do you think would help the most in stopping a character like this becoming so powerful while not crippling everyone else?
On 3.2.2012 22:21 half wrote: Also, in honour of your being the first to kill Morgoth since release, and of doing so through incredible, Feanor-worthy feats of smithing, you are hereby granted the reward of creating an artefact for future versions of Sil. I was surprised because with Ephel I'd found a _Revelations which enabled me to hunt for forges (and there were plenty of levels without them). Bredrimor just stumbled across them and there seemed to be forges on nearly all the last few levels. This seemed lucky to me - what are the odds on finding a forge at 950'?
In terms of the build, it is Elbereth that makes everything possible. Ephel tried to go toe to toe with Morgoth, but that wasn't going so well. As soon as he started singing though, Morgoth would flee and then speed and opportunist meant he got hit nearly every turn whilst never retaliating. Elbereth means most creatures just flee and the only ones you have to worry about are horrors and serpents. It just seems a bit too powerful to me. Saying this though, I don't how much of a difference Majesty makes on top of this - maybe it is the combination of the two?
In terms of smithing, I'd make artifice also dependent on artistry so you have to invest a bit more and maybe up the skill point cost.
Other thoughts
- cap the stats. I concentrated on getting grace as high as possible to increase smithing and song
- Unwavering voice means you can pretty much sing forever - maybe 50% instead of 100%?
Overall though, I'd like to say that Sil is a "masterpiece". It is so well thought out and apart from certain individuals *ahem*, it has proved to be very well balanced. I love how you've stripped back so much from Angband and yet brought a real depth to character advancement over a much shorter game.
@debo - I must admit I copied jujuben's start with Pellian and made two =accuracy(+2) and a "Blessed Realm(+0). Ephel found an enchanted forge as the first one so made a "Grace(+1) instead.
On 4.2.2012 09:54 Psi wrote: Have I any chance of finding Gothmog, Ungoliant, Shelob and co? Do I need to craft a danger item perhaps?
On 4.2.2012 10:30 Psi wrote: @half - and how could I forget. It is far too cheap to put speed on an artefact. I've not seen perm speed on anything else in the game (I guess there maybe artefacts out there that no-one has found yet). Speed should probably only be available on a masterpiece. Perhaps 40-45 points instead of 25?
On 4.2.2012 11:15 Scatha wrote: Gothmog and Ungoliant (along with Gorthaur and Glaurung) are level 24 monsters, and don't normally turn up in the dungeon. You might be able to find them in some vaults at 950ft if you have a danger item. But there is also have a unique vault associated with each of them; these can only appear once each, and you have already been in Ungoliant's, but you might find Gothmog this way. There should have been another of these at 1,000ft, but it probably couldn't stand your singing voice.
On 4.2.2012 11:55 Scatha wrote: Thanks for all the feedback! It's really good to have another informed opinion here. And glad you've enjoyed the game so much.
Regarding speed, obviously going fast is very strong compared to going at normal speed. But because of the player cap at speed 3, you lose the benefits of Sprinting and of Potions of Quickness, normally one of the best abilities and one of the best type of potion. In particular you can often have a hoard of potions of quickness which will see you through the critical moments of the game. That said we're certainly not completely confident about our Smithing pricings, but I thought you should know that this was a reasonably major consideration in our trying to guess the pricing for Speed.
Thanks for the comment on Elbereth. We'd had suspicions -- but the monster fear system was one of the later elements to make it into the game, so it's had less testing than most parts.
Interesting point on capping the stats. I think that getting them to silly levels is ultimately hard enough to achieve and gives enough of a cool feeling to the player that it's worth keeping, particularly as any cap would be arbitrary, but I see that it would help rein this kind of character in a little. Do you think that making the price rise for a second and third point of the same stat on an artefact even steeper would help a little?
It does seem that part of the issue was the number of forges at the end. Nine/ten artefacts seems a little excessive to me. Interesting that you got down to 900ft pretty quickly and then spend 7.5k turns at the last two depths, forging five artefacts in this time! Maybe making an artefact should take 300 turns to match the 3 forge uses (would also make it effectively impossible to make an artefact with aid from !oG)? This would have slowed you down a little. We don't want to overcompensate on reducing the number of forges too far, because this has the potential to make smithing a lot more frustrating. And it may be that if Elbereth were less effective you'd be slowed down quite a bit in clearing the levels to find forges.
Unwavering voice is obviously helping you here, but I think the main thing helping you sing forever is your ridiculous Grace score! At 12 grace without Unwavering Voice you can already sing for over twice as long as a character with a reasonable 4 grace and the ability. Not sure what to do about this.
On 4.2.2012 13:25 Psi wrote: I'm not completely sure how the speed mechanic works with regards to turncount. Does it affect it at all? Does forging take less time or do I get longer per level etc? It certainly helps with monsters that change direction etc so you cannot keep sprint going.
I played the game as quick as I could in the early game to give me more time at the end to find forges when I had more experience to spend. Does forging currently have a fixed time then - I hadn't appreciated that. Personally I would make it a multiple of the smithing score it takes to make - perhaps 4 or 5 turns per point of smithing?
I don't think increasing the value for second and third points would make any difference. It was rare enough already to put two points in one stat because of the current price. I think there should be a rise for increasing two stats though, as currently it is more efficient to have single point rises in two stats across two artefacts rather than double point rises in one stat on each (I think anyway - I haven't actually priced it up!).
I never actually thought to use !Grace whilst smithing - so that in itself wouldn't have affected me. When finding a forge I just cleared the forge room itself and then started smithing. Whenever anything came in I just switched to Elbereth for a turn or two and then back to Aule. I'd be constantly interrupted, but would get there in the end! Elbereth usually worked on the first turn, so if that wasn't so effective it would make it harder.
On 4.2.2012 14:24 Scatha wrote: Right, it's worth knowing that you played very quickly at the start to get time for the end. I guess we shouldn't think of this as a typical number of forges.
The turn count is by player turns, so speed doesn't help you in that regard; it just makes the monsters slower relative to you.
Forging is 100 turns per item at the moment. Varying it with the difficulty of the item would be an interesting brake on the ability to repeatedly create super-high-difficulty items.
It is indeed more efficient to make two items giving +1 to each of two stats than +2 to one each, but I see that even so you ended up with five different items increasing a single stat by 2 or more (including two non-artefact pieces of jewellery upping something by 3). I also think it _should_ be more efficient, as otherwise you could stack it so as to get +4 to a single stat for the same price as getting +2 to each of two. The way the Sil system generally works I think many characters have a preferred stat and would just stack that one (to some extent you did this with grace even with this system, but there are some slots where you can't put a grace bonus).

As it happens I found one more forge, reinvested in smithing and made another "masterpiece", the +2 ring. The other +2 item I made was after having already beaten Morgoth, so can't really be considered.
Therefore in terms of artefacts during the game, I only reached +2 on "masterpieces".

By the way, that unique deathblade was the toughest opponent I faced. I actually had to heal up during that fight just in case... I imagine a more normal character build could have real problems against it. Not sure how one would normally fight it, as I presume fleeing is pretty futile?
On 6.2.2012 12:07 Scatha wrote: It's not that they get a bonus to Smithing but that you can put a bonus to Smithing on an artefact hammer (whereas you can't normally put it on weapons). So I guess maybe you did miss a trick (could have made something better than the Dagger of the Smith).
Deathblades don't attack you unless you get very close, so you can always avoid fighting it. But in this case it might just be it got a lucky hit against you. It's got a (+33, 1d9) attack which is _very_ hard to dodge but can normally be absorbed without too much difficulty by high protection and Critical Resistance, for instance. It also resists Cold, so your halberd would have been less effective than normal.
