So... is a mattock of doom the best bet? Something like a 6d4 frost brand? Any better ideas?
On 31.1.2012 23:30 Psi wrote: Or perhaps two weapon fighting would be better? I could craft a battle axe that cuts easily through armour... what does that actually do in a normal fight?
I'd also been thinking about Song of Mastery...

On 31.1.2012 23:50 Scatha wrote: Wow, nice, and neat putting Weaponsmith on your gloves. I would definitely consider taking Masterpiece, even at its current price, as the extra 14 difficulty for your final item is likely to give you more than a stat point's worth.
Just to let you know how branding and sharpness on weapons work. A brand gives you an extra damage die (like Slays) against anything which doesn't resist the relevant element (or two extra damage dice against things which is extra vulnerable to it). It is thus often best on weapons with a few large dice. Sharpness will halve the protection roll of your opponents. It stacks multiplicatively with Song of Sharpness. I'd guess that your melee might not be high enough to make a mattock your best bet.
! Wow, just noticed your "regular", non-artefact ring. You've really been going to town here.
Are you carrying that many staves of recharging to make yourself less vulnerable to inventory destruction?
You might want to hurry down to the throne room if you want to be top of the ladder -- you'll need to get three Silmarils and escape the fastest. You're about 400 turns ahead of the point where Felagund entered the throne room.
On 1.2.2012 00:04 Scatha wrote: By the way, two-handed weapons get a discount to the total smithing costs because they use up two slots (you may well have noticed this as I guess you're pretty familiar with the system by now).
I've just been looking at some of the possibilities for the weapons you can make ... well, have fun!
On 1.2.2012 01:52 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I've only dreamed of having such smithing skill at my disposal. +4 damage rings cost 66, and +3 damage rings cost 45. Just sayin', heh. Of course, you know I lust for damage, always. With a mattock, and those rings, and charging, and str bonus. Wow, whammo does not even begin to cover it.

On 1.2.2012 07:36 Psi wrote: This is all very well, but I can't find Morgoth...
I saw him at the beginning but then the level was plunged into darkness and someone keeps shouting for help. I've been wandering around for ages but I guess he is too scared to show his face?
On 1.2.2012 07:42 Psi wrote: Right... took mastery which at least stopped Ungoliant from running. I couldn't see it, but the darkness radius showed me where it was and let me kill it. The throne room seems empty now. What do I do? My turncount may be too high and perhaps I should have stopped and asked for advice earlier...
On 1.2.2012 08:49 Psi wrote: @Scatha - thanks for the forging advice! I had no idea about the two-handed weapon reduction and to be honest I still don't know what it is! Regardless I've crafted what seems to be a very nice halberd.
The recharging staves are to use with my staff of revelations. Helped with forge hunting and will help on the ascent.
@HM - I was thinking of you when I was pricing up a mattock of doom! I think you'll appreciate the Halberd nevertheless.
On 1.2.2012 10:21 Psi wrote: Meant to say that the main reason I added weaponsmith was to use the bow slot as a free place to stick stats, resists etc - but I quickly found I had been second-guessed!
On 1.2.2012 12:25 Scatha wrote: I think two-handed weapons have 2/3 of the difficulty you would expect when smithing. Your halberd is indeed incredibly nice. (Although sadly you didn't make it quite heavy enough for your new strength bonus! For two-handed weapons you want at least 1.5lb for each point of Strength.) Your overall stats are pretty unbelievable.
My point about the staves was just that you could pump more of the charges into a smaller number of staves, so as not to demand so many inventory slots. But perhaps you're fine.
On 1.2.2012 12:29 Psi wrote: Ah - didn't realise is was 1.5lbs for 2 handed. Oops!
Also does that mean I can use recharging to recharge a recharging? I assume no danger of blowing things up?
Main problem though is where is Morgoth - any ideas what has happened/is happening and how to sort it out? Thanks!
On 1.2.2012 12:29 half wrote: Psi, I think Morgoth has (buggily) fled from the level, never to return and making the game unwinnable. My advice is to try to completely explore the throne room and if that doesn't work, then email me the save file and I can try to resummon Morgoth for you (sil@amirrorclear.net). It would really be a shame to have to give up on this character!
Obviously I'll stop Morgoth leaving the throne room in future versions.
On 1.2.2012 12:30 half wrote: Yes, I don't like the Angband thing of using a bow as a ring of speed etc, so I prevented it in Sil...
On 1.2.2012 12:46 half wrote: Regarding recharging: a staff of recharging is just a normal staff which has the power of adding a charge to a selected staff. I realised that this mechanic is much simpler and much better for Sil than the Angband mechanic. They give you a limited supply of charges for whichever of the staffs you have that you need most. They create a lot of interesting trade-offs too: should I use the recharging now or wait in case I find the staff I've been looking for? should I recharge my staff of perceptions now and throw away the recharging staff, or should I keep it for flexibility?
On 1.2.2012 12:48 half wrote: I should also add that you have really amazing self-made artefacts there!
On 1.2.2012 12:53 Psi wrote: Thanks half - I've cleared out the treasure rooms and emailed you the savefile.
On 1.2.2012 13:49 Psi wrote: Thanks for fixing the savefile. There was some weird option left on that let me see where monsters were though.
Morgoth fell in the throne room. Poor love.
The silmarils were trickier though and I shattered my halberd after collecting one. I thought I was doomed, but killing the silent watcher gave me enough experience for song of sharpness which let me prise the remaining silmarils with Nargil.
On 1.2.2012 14:19 Scatha wrote: Well that was pretty incredible. Congratulations!
Not that you even remotely needed it in the end, but I think Rapid Attack would have made your halberd even more ludicrous. Against foes who don't resist cold, that would have meant two sharp attacks of (+22,3d15) instead of one at (+25,3d17).
I notice that you were overburdened at the end (down to Grond). But with the Ring of Force and Sprinting, perhaps you didn't even notice?
On 1.2.2012 14:20 LostTemplar wrote: First true win. Nice.
On 1.2.2012 14:25 Psi wrote: To be honest I hadn't looked properly at other melee abilities to realise there was that option - that would have been awesome!
I didn't notice being overburdened - oops. Can sprinting work on top of speed then in that situation? I did try using Grond, but unsurprisingly I struggled to hit anything!
On 1.2.2012 14:44 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Awesome! I imagine your elf looking like the version of Celebrimbor that Angus McBride did. Take that, First Age, uh, again!
On 1.2.2012 16:02 half wrote: How many points did you have invested in Smithing before your Masterpiece? And what was the peak score including bonuses, but not Masterpiece?
On 1.2.2012 16:05 Psi wrote: I invested 14 points in smithing. With all my forging gear on and aule playing I was up to 40 points.
On 1.2.2012 16:34 half wrote: The way speed works is that you have a raw number of 2 + modifiers, so with Sprinting + speed it could be equal to 4, then it is capped to be in the range [1, 3]. So yes, if you are slowed by a magical effect and/or weight, then having two sources of speed is useful.
