So I decided to make a charger, and I've been pretty lucky: my first forge was four-use, so I got armoursmithing and enchantment and made myself gloves of the forge, a corslet of protection, boots of speed, and great helm of brilliance. The boots of speed make running away to get another charge in possible, as well excellent for pursuing. Things went pretty well, I went deep fairly fast and encountered Uldor the Accursed. This was a pretty tricky fight, and I used my healing potions and things were sticky: I was on low health and so was he. I ran towards my known staircase up, and every 6 steps took a step towards him and charged him. On my last such attempt before the stairs I slew him, and grabbed the axe he dropped: which turned out to be the rather nice Battle Axe of Hurin.

I've since found 2 more forges, and am wondering what to do with one of them, and have forged myself some gauntlets of strength, giving me a nice 3d10 damage normally, rising to 6d10 on charges... I'm not enormously tough at this point, and my to-hit isn't great, but boy do I pack a punch. If I stay alive, this should be pretty fun to play.

Oh, fun fact: charging trolls does 8d10 (as my axe slays trolls). On one occasion I scored a double critical hitting for 10d10. At 400ft...

Apparently I'm lucking out on forges. Found another one, wondering what to go for.

So, I invested in artifice, because scarcely had I left the forge I'd found than I found another, and so have for myself two rather nifty artifacts: my dwarf mask gives +1 constitution, and my brass lantern I gave +1 light and see invisible (though with the artifact lightsource bug this gives LR4 and uses no fuel...)

Now down to 700ft, another forge at this point would be handy, as I now have just about enough experience to forge a very nice shield or suit of armour.

Down to 850ft.

I had one slightly sticky moment at 800ft, when the Prince of Cats and his bodyguard were on one side of me, and a Kemenrauko on t'other, but I managed to kill the Kemenrauko, blocking that side, and kill the cats using a couple of potions of healing.

I've now found the corslet of Fingon, wearing which my base stats would be 4 /4 / 8 / 4, which is pretty sick. I quite like my superior corslet of protection, though, for 2d6 defence. Would quite like a forge now, though, or find a better shield.

Nice going here. I'm glad to see the interesting decisions about whether to use the artefact armour or the nice regular armour you have. We perhaps don't see those decisions often enough with weapons -- perhaps a sign that the artefact weapons trend towards too good.

Permanent constitution 10...

I accidentally took 6 stealth thinking opportunist was controlled retreat, though I might get opportunist now anyway. Especially if I also grab song of Elbereth and Majesty...

Would like a forge to forge myself a decent shield before heading down to Morgoth. Unfortunately I lost my gloves of the forge <+3> to fire :(

In the Stealth tree, Exchange Places is also very good even for non-stealthy charactes; I guess it might be worth considering now you have some points there.

It's a shame you don't have any potions of Con for 200+ health!

In Morgoth's lair! I didn't manage to make myself a decent shield, first choosing to make myself a cloak, and not finding another 3-use forge. I did find a 2-use forge which gave me 2 rings of +4 accuracy, but if I'd found a 3 use forge that would have been rather nice...

I did, though, pick up Delmereth, so I'm tempted to get 2-weapon fighting. I'm also tempted to put some more in Song and get either Este or Elbereth/Mastery.

(Incidentally, I took your advice and went for exchange places, alas, have still not found any potions of constitution...)

I've worked out that wielding my mattock and charging I could be doing 12d13, which might be enough to kill Morgoth, especially if I took knockback so I could charge repeatedly...

Yes, 12d13 is pretty crazy. You may well be able to defeat Morgoth... Congratulations on building such a powerful character.

I've still not yet done anything in the throne room: am considering how to play it. One option I'm strongly considering is charging in with herbs of rage, 2 weapon-fighting, and song of Este for increased healing (Este does stack with regeneration, right?)

I hope this character shows that the expected number of forges is high enough. One remaining issue is having somewhat too many at great depths and somewhat too few earlier on. Another is having too high a variance. The latter issue could only be dealt with by making what appears on a level dependent on what has appeared in the past. At the moment this only happens with unique things (the unique forge, greater vaults, artefacts, unique monsters) and with the first forge and the first curved sword. I'd like to avoid it if possible for (non-unique) forges, but if it really would improve gameplay I'll consider it.

Alas, I bit off more than I could chew in the throne room, and was too easy a target for Grond... (forgot to take a character dump)

Still, that was pretty fun, and I think was pretty close to being successful. :)

half: re: forges: I found lots around 400-600ft, but I only found 2 deeper than that, only one of which had enough uses for an artifact, which was unfortunate. Still, I didn't feel like I was especially hard done by in forges, just a little unfortunate not to be able to use my high forging (~30) on more than one artifact. Had I known it was going to be my last forge, I could have got Masterpiece, which would have been nice, but unfortunately I didn't manage to find a forge on any of my attempts at 950ft.
