I had an unfortunate incident at about 400 ft where I fell through some trapped stairs and could only get to a staircase if I walked past a violet mold... I also 'saw' a shadow for the first time at 600 ft (see the Screenshots section of Angband.oook.cz). In another incident, I fell through a false floor and went from 13 health to 2. I don't think I'm long for this world...
On 29.1.2012 12:36 half wrote: Oh, and I've just found a staff of revelations, a staff of treasures, and through them, Orcrist and the stairs to 700 ft. Should I descend? Should I start looting levels until I run out of charges? Should I invest in some melee and ascend to a depth that could manage, in order to start building the character properly?
For what its worth, I've started to be noticed by dragonflies and wargs. I also know that I'd be in a lot of trouble if I hit a web or roost, and my perception is not high enough to reliably see them, so I feel that if I ascended to a 'safe' area, I'd still just die but more ignominiously.
On 29.1.2012 12:50 Scatha wrote: I _think_ that your best hope here is to push on down. It seems that if you can get Listen and Song of Silence you will have some chance of getting to bottom ... at which point I suppose you'll need a very substantial Song to succeed, but you can surely worry about that later. There's a question of whether to race down or spend longer at the middle-to-deep depths on experience safari (and risk being eaten by lions while you're at it).
For dealing with webs, I'd make trying to find an item with Free Action, and/or a Staff of Freedom, a priority (but is hard to so too much to influence this). If I'm remembering correctly the spiders are still unaware when you walk into a web, so if you hold *very* still they might not notice you.
On 29.1.2012 13:42 half wrote: I decided to head to the other side of the level before descending to investigate an amulet, some special boots and a staff. I ended up being noticed while slipping past some Cave Trolls. I ran away towards some Werewolfs and then tried slipping back through the Cave Trolls. My evasion was not high enough to get past them all (I was surprisingly close as I had got past the two alert ones). I was killed in one hit. I'm not really sure how they noticed me as they only have perception 5 to my 14 stealth (or 19 as I think I was in stealth mode). I had disguise too, but I think one might have tried to move onto my square, negating all of this. The items turned out to be boots of slowness, an amulet of adornment and (more usefully) a staff of foes.

Once I get down to werewolf depths I'm much more comfortable having Vanish and Listen at a minimum. Exchange Places is good insurance against a casual misstep during play, and I find Sprinting is essential for running from werewolves and other fast-movers.
I think I'm going to try one of these builds as a non-singing fighter, but I just don't know what will happen if it manages to live to 1000'. I'm not sure there's any way it could do Morgoth.
On 2.2.2012 13:35 Scatha wrote: With my Edain who have had low perception early on (but want to be stealthy, so no door-bashing) I'm happy to just treat locked doors as dead ends (which sometimes means re-rolling a level because I'm stuck), and don't even bother trying to open chests.
