This was just stupidity. I had decided to run as soon as I saw the Creeping Horror. Unfortunately I stepped on the confusion trap... Still I was several squares ahead and didn't seem in much trouble so I thought I'd ride it out. As I was running I hadn't thought to wear the cloak of warmth of drink the elemental resistance potion. If only I'd just healed... etc etc etc.

I'll add that I didn't feel in any danger (first mistake) and was stunned to see the "You die." message and thought I'd misread it until the screen blanked...

For what it's worth, drinking the Miruvor would also have cured your confusion. Actually I see that neither your evasion nor your protection are super-high, so I guess that a fair amount of your defence came from controlling fights and killing things first. That made being confused particularly dangerous for you.

That is indeed unfortunate. It can be tricky to remember how bad certain things are. A confusion trap isn't very spectacular, but it should be a stop-sign: take your hands of the keyboard and think about it. Having 5 or 10 turns where you don't control the character is bad!

I know I should have thought about this with Turin on Thursday -- being surrounded gives monsters up to +10 against you: that is rather like fighting monsters from many levels deeper in the dungeon. The orc is now a cat warrior etc. It is bad enough getting 8 attacks on you for every attack you do, but the penalties make it a problem for almost anyone.
