After leaving more corpses than there are monsters in the dungeon I finally had a character who was showing some promise...then I found the battle axe of Hurin, death is imminent.

Great weapon for a dwarf there. You may still want to keep your shield on though, as it is a very good one and with it you will have impressive protection. Make sure to take advantage of your new Song: it won't be very good with no investment in Song, but it won't have much of a downside (it makes you noisier, but you already have such a bad stealth that this may not matter). Also, if you want to get some Song later for Song of Aule, then it might be worth getting a few points now to help.

I agree with half's comment about the shield. At this point in the dungeon, 3d8 damage should be plenty to take down most enemies pretty quickly. When you find very heavily armoured foes (or just very dangerous ones) further down, it can be more important to get your damage output up.

Thanks for the advice. I found a forge and decided to go for the song of aule I was creating the new cloak and kept getting interrupted so I cleared some more of the level and found another forge. I know have 5 forge uses left, any suggestions for what to make?

I think I can get to 17 smithing, maybe 18 if I find a few more monsters on the level.

It might well be worth your while to make a +3 set of gloves/gauntlets of the Forge. It's a 300 experience investment for what will essentially be another point of Smithing forever (you might get this another way as you do occasionally find such gloves, but it's by no means something you can count upon).

Apart from that I'd look first to try to fill the slots where you have nothing, then consider upgrades/swap items/creating things just to identify them.

Well, I made some shiny new toys that I like and found a couple new things as well. The staff let me pseudo-id some items but I'm still not sure what the amulet does. The bow slays wolves and spiders, but I forgot to inscribe it.

It's so discouraging sometimes when you know you are dead and there is nothing you can do but delay the inevitable. I need to just avoid anything violet like the plague I think.

Avoiding violet things is pretty reasonable. You can also give yourself much better odds of resisting by investing in Will a bit.
