Pellian started life as yet another hit and run combat smith, my personal favorite build type. 3 uses on the 1st forge went to two rings of accuracy and an amulet of the blessed realm +0 for the light radius. A decent arrow supply and an early shortbow of himring (later exchanged for the better all purpose longbow) served me well early, until I found a very nifty cloak indeed, and started turning towards song...
Elbereth, arrows, sprinting and charge make for a very potent combination, as the orc uniques now know. 500' ran me into a bit more trouble than I could handle all at once, between archers, spiders and worms all in the same room, so I hopped back up to 450, where I killed Orthrond and scared his bodyguard away from a very nice poking stick, and a 4 charge forge, with 7k xp. What to make, what to make... With Aule and gloves, I can easily boost smithing to the low 20s at least. Some xp expenditure can get it higher... Artifact boots with exchange places? Armor with fire/frost resist for the dragons and serpents coming up? Gloves of killing things? Will sleep on it.
On 22.1.2012 12:22 Scatha wrote: I hadn't thought of making an Amulet of the Blessed Realm +0 -- nice idea. Did you eat off the grace penalty?
Have fun with the artefact creation. You don't have any herbs of restoration or stat potions, so you may want to be sparing with effects which drain you. You'll definitely want to get fire resist before the end, but there may be time enough yet to defer that.
On 22.1.2012 22:05 jujuben wrote: After careful consideration, decided I really don't need an artifact yet, and that improving some of my less spectacular gear would be a better. The only big bonus in my price range is exchange places, and careful play *should* keep that unnecessary. Upping song got me to 22 smithing, which was enough to greatly improve several equipment slots (dwarf mask for rFire, con from the armor, free action from the greaves), and access to song of sharpness, which is really quite excellent. Arrows down a corridor now hit more than one enemy a decent chunk of the time - a highly unexpected benefit.
An artifact may have been more exciting, but I think I got better bang for my buck this way.
On 22.1.2012 22:52 Scatha wrote: Looking at what you made, it's hard to fault your decision here! The only reason I can think of to have pushed for artifice is that you'll find some forges later which don't have exactly three uses, so you can cover things with the spares, but you're probably right to upgrade to keep you safer and more sure of finding those later forges.
On 23.1.2012 01:06 jujuben wrote: I think I did pretty well... found another forge, not enough xp saved for artifice, but had some stat potions available this time. Better shield, dex gloves and a ring of strength +2 it was. Rapid attack and rapid fire are both looking like attractive endgame skills now. Got less use out of my homemade corselet than I expected, but I really, really cannot complain about that. And using Amras for double fire resist while I shoot baby dragons with extremely sharp arrows makes them almost trivial. We'll see how it holds up to older ones.
On 23.1.2012 04:55 jujuben wrote: Well, it's official. This is the deepest I've ever been. Probably time to quite for the night, before I get tired enough to get stupid. Made some nice boots to get add cold resist and exchange places to my arsenal. Rapid fire works very very well indeed, and the extra dex was nice. Elbereth and single shot arrows have been dealing with cat warriors and their light/fast ilk, sharpness and double shot (or poking with a stick, if they get that far) have been working nicely for big heavy hitters. Need to boost song a little more and pick up lorien and a nice big dice weapon, and not make any stupid mistakes, and I might actually stand a chance.
On 23.1.2012 12:10 Scatha wrote: Those gauntlets were a cute find, although I suppose you already had gauntlets of the forge so they're less of an upgrade than I'd have expected.
I'm not so certain that the Song of Lorien would help this character, but it sounds as though you have a plan!
On 23.1.2012 16:00 jujuben wrote: Hrm... quite possible. The Lorien method probably requires some stealth, and this character really *really* doesn't have any. Big weaponry is probably a better bet.
Cute is about right for the gauntlets. With triple fire resist now available, I might have to try taking out some dragons, but other than that, not much change gameplay wise.
3rd try at 800' gets me a shot at forging something in Orodruth, if I'm lucky enough to be able to finish... Effective smithing 35 before spending xp. Unfortunately, a running battle with kemenrakuo means it's dangerously open. Clear the level and risk losing it to a trapdoor, or forge on and hope nothing too nasty hears me and comes to investigate....
I'll probably forge on. This kind of situation is really what boots of exchange places are for. But it's going to take a bit to decide what to make. I wasn't expecting to make any artifacts quite as nice as this makes possible.
On 23.1.2012 16:32 half wrote: Congratulations on finding Orodruth. May you make excellent use of it!
On 24.1.2012 05:21 sethos wrote: wait- a unique forge? that sounds really really awesome - what's the bonus for that baby?
On 25.1.2012 01:04 jujuben wrote: Decided not to play this one while sick... started again tonight. Yes, there is a unique forge, "where Grond was made", which give +7 to all smithing on it. Made the ring there. Debated at great length what to make on it, but that seemed like a good setup. Continuing my descent, killing all who don't run (and many who do). Took Clarity and rPoison from the will tree to fill my resistance holes. Found another forge, and made a better Dwarf Mask for my rFire needs, with some stat boosts and Lore Master, to give me a better idea of when a fight is worth the loot. Smaug probably wasn't - he got some good licks in as he ran, and I may have been in a small amount of danger, even with 2x rFire, but he went down.
I think I'm just about ready to end this - could use a few more arrows, but I should be OK. Elbereth + speed + charge should work well enough for lesser baddies. Hopefully Anguiriel will do the trick for getting the crown and doing a bit of minor surgery on it...
On 25.1.2012 01:25 Scatha wrote: That ring is excellent, and I like your helm, too. It's almost a shame, you kind of want Lore-master on a swap hat ... ("putting your thinking cap on").
I usually don't tend to take Clarity, relying on a high Will to stop those negative effects. Confusion is the really dangerous one, and I admit that I do sometimes find dragons manage to get me with it. Anyhow, it looks like you're in a pretty good position here.
Your Voice is ridiculous. How good have you been finding Song of Mastery? Or are you mostly just using Elbereth?
On 25.1.2012 02:03 jujuben wrote: Both are rather great, yes. When I made the helm, I had all the key resists, so stat boosts were what I was after. Had the skill for 2, but 3 was out of the question, so I looked around for useful skills... Lore master is also great for scoping out baddies to make the fight vs run (or at this stage, mostly fight vs. scare them off).
Elbereth and Mastery are both very very good with this character. While I was chasing the unique cats, some of their bodyguard were getting into the high -100s for morale. Mastery is a bit better for killing uniques, as it keeps them from making it to the stairs (usually), but they're fairly interchangeable at this stage.
On 25.1.2012 02:24 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Wow, just, wow.
On 25.1.2012 05:49 jujuben wrote: And I made it... Tried for more Silmarils, but Anguirel shattered, and I didn't have extra weapons - the spear and the mattock were the only other ones I was carrying, and I didn't want to risk losing either on the ascent... maybe a stack of daggers next time. As for the ascent, with plenty of revalations charges, and an absolutely insane singing voice, there wasn't much in the way of challenge. Even Morgoth fled from me - with a morale under -100! I did NOT expect Elbereth to be that effective on him. I suspect this is one of the builds that *might* stand a chance of taking him under the current rules and with just the right circumstances, but I decided to take the safe win this time.

Were you tempted by getting Opportunist? Either by an investment in stealth or by making some artefact gloves? It goes very well with making opponents flee.
I trust that you also found Flanking to be particularly useful with Charge, Sprinting and Song of Mastery. For example, it lets one charge without breaking one's sprint.
On 25.1.2012 16:05 jujuben wrote: Thanks all.
Flanking was OK, but not spectacular - I didn't get it until after sprinting was obsoleted by my ring of speed. Getting it earlier to keep my sprinting speed would have made it much more powerful. Opportunist was on my heavy combat gloves - I was wearing the fire resist gear gear because dragon fire was one of the few things scratching me on the way up (as long as I was reasonably smart and kept away from the big V).
