I found two forges. At the first forge, I didn't have enough XP for jeweler (which was what I wanted) yet, so I just made some normal armor. At the second forge, I added jeweler (to make my two rings) and armorsmith (which I used first to make the smithing gauntlets).
I just now noticed I was wearing an amulet of danger. Maybe if something doesn't identify itself after a little while, I should take it off (or if I start seeing mountain trolls early like I did).

You describe the sensible strategies for the Amulet of Danger pretty well. There are some other approaches too, but they're a little more esoteric.
