A long list of things I'd like to get includes Flanking, some more Perception abilities, something in the Will tree (maybe Hardiness+), further Smithing, Song of Aule and eventually Song of Mastery.
Probably I should just increase my melee, but I'm trying to keep a bit in the bank against coming across a forge.
Song of Elbereth is helping me deal with the crowds again. I wouldn't mind Opportunist, but I don't fancy the Stealth requirement. Perhaps I'll put it on an artefact ...

I'd actually suggest putting Opportunist on some type of {special} weapon if we could find a good name. Spear of the Hunt?
On 17.1.2012 20:11 jujuben wrote: It seems like a good opportunity for a mixed blessings weapon, similar to swords of fury. Perhaps spears of backstabbing, with a grace penalty? Or of daggers of treachery, with something even nastier to both the wielder and the target?

I really enjoyed this archetype and thought it would play well in the late game, so I've made a similar character (dump will follow).

I need to pick up some fire resistance and/or extra constitution before fire drakes start appearing in earnest, but otherwise I think it's looking good. I'm hoping to find some more forges soon.
On 18.1.2012 21:04 Scatha wrote: Ah, I've just found an enchanted forge with four uses. Now the dilemma -- what to use it for. With four uses it seems ideal for my first artefact, but I'm ~800 experience short of enough to pick up artifice. I could explore more of the level and hope to get there; my main worry would be a going through a false floor.
Even if I get an artefact, that leaves me with one use of the thing for a regular item. I can get to 27 smithing if I restore my Grace and put points into smithing to buy artifice later. This would let me create:
- ring of damage +2
- ring of accuracy (+4)
- amulet of grace +2 (but I don't have enough methods of restoring grace, so perhaps not)
The jewellery seems to be the best use for crazy smithing scores without artifice. On the other hand, I could just make something simple like body armour increasing my Con, a shield of frost, or gauntlets of power, any of which would help me.
Any opinions? :~) Clever ideas for finessing this are welcome. I'm really looking mainly for a few things:
- extra grace!
- extra Con, and at least one source of fire resist, to make me feel less fragile
- Higher damage output
On 19.1.2012 00:09 Scatha wrote: I miscalculated; I could get up to 30 Smithing.
I went for the artefact route, but in exploring the level I got a large scare when I stepped into sight of a young fire drake and it breathed, taking me down to 1 health! I decided that while I'd love artefacts increasing my singing and grace further, some fire resist and higher health was a priority, so I've made the Dwarf Mask of Survival. Sadly I've not yet found any potions of Constitution or Herbs of Restoration in this game! But this gives me the fire resist, and I'm crossing my fingers that I can find one of these two.
On 19.1.2012 02:02 Scatha wrote: Since my last dump, not so many turns ago, I found a herb of restoration, taking me from the 3 Constitution I've lived on so far this game up to a more comfortable 5. On the next level I found the Battle Axe of Hurin, and in a chest next to it, the Necklace of the Dwarves! Overall I've doubled my health -- I'm feeling relatively untouchable right now, but I'll have to head further down soon.
On 19.1.2012 22:14 Scatha wrote: I found the Cat Fortress, but fell through to another level before I could plunder it. I think I feel I've found this one rather too often compared to the other greater vaults, but that's partly down to the minimum-depth requirements.
Anyhow I just found another forge, and decided to myself a pair of boots, which I've had the arrogance to name after one of the Valar ...
On 20.1.2012 06:33 Satyr wrote: But they are aptly named, speed + exchange places on the same boots is pretty impressive. What smithing skill do you need for that?
On 20.1.2012 11:23 half wrote: 12 Grace! I believe this is both the highest Grace and the highest Stat we've seen. And it is the permanent score as well, so fit for comparison. It is interesting that you only have 10 points in Smithing.
On 20.1.2012 11:24 half wrote: Is the trumpet of terror useful? How about the trumpet of blasting? Can you give up your mattock now? How is the commonness of forges in the late game?
On 20.1.2012 12:34 Scatha wrote: Some answers to questions, and then an update in the next comment.
Satyr, I needed 33 Smithing to make the boots. In some ways the worst thing about them is that they obsolete my Sprinting ability! The Cloak of Ulmo was a little harder -- 38 -- and made in an enchanted forge in Sauron's halls.
I have 12 grace with a swap item here -- normally I wear my artefact helm instead of the crown of grace. But yes, still.
I don't use the trumpets much, but I was keeping them against emergencies. Actually you need voice to use them and they interrupt your song, so I could probably ditch the trumpet of terror (I still have the Staff of Majesty). I did use the trumpet of blasting when trapped in a room with multiple Gwathraukar clustered at the entrance (as well as some other nasties). I blew myself a way out, and circled back, and was able to take them one at a time, so visible. I realise now I could have spent the 1000 experience on Listen at this point, which would have probably been just as effective.
I'm keeping the mattock because it's actually my highest damage weapon. I actually think it's not ideal flavour that they do so much more damage than everything else -- we could move them to (-5,5d2), which would keep them top for very high strength characters, but not everyone else (at present, Strength 2 users do more damage with a mattock than a great axe).
Forges are maybe a bit too common in the late game. Part of the issue is that I got to the late game quickly, so had more time to look around for forges and thereby increase my power level. We don't want to stop people living the Smithing dream, but as you remark my character only has ten points in Smithing, so may well be too good at this for the investment.
Every time I make an artefact, Song of Aule is worth almost one permanent stat point to me. If I can make this many artefacts, that's very good indeed.
On 20.1.2012 12:40 Scatha wrote: So, I'm standing at another forge, wearing Maeglin's armour, and wondering what to create now. I'm wavering between an artefact light source with +3 to grace, which would be a hope that I'll find another forge before the end (and smash my own record of highest stat 12 while I'm at it), and buying Masterpiece, perhaps one more point of Smithing, and using my Potions of Grace to create something like:
Gloves of Tulkas (+1)[+0]
Increases your Strength and Damage sides by 2.
I can confirm the bug someone else reported where artefacts don't take the experience they claim to cost. I've noticed this both for Abilities and Skills.
On 20.1.2012 21:04 Scatha wrote: *** Warning: There follow spoilers for the endgame! ***
Well, I made it out, and with two more Silmarils and one more hand than Beren. Now I have to hope I'm fast enough to evade the Sons of Feanor!
Song of Mastery and boots of speed were very strong. I actually didn't really need the exchange places from the boots -- think I only used it once. My gloves, rings and artefact weapons, plus charge, meant that I had an excellent damage output with relatively meagre Skill investment on my part.
I didn't spend any experience after going down to 950ft. I did try fighting Morgoth at one point on the way up. I could scratch him, but never got him below about 75% health. My Mastery over him was not absolute, and he would sometimes get turns and hit me for a lot of damage; I'd step away and heal. I don't think I could have taken him down. It's just possible I could have managed it if I'd spent the experience I was hoarding, but I'm not sure.

I hadn't noticed that your boots granted Speed. I thought they were 'just' Sprinting + Exchange Places which is still fantastic. I'm a bit shocked that it is not only possible to make a Speed item without effectively giving up on the slot or using Masterpiece, but to add a great ability to it as well.

On 22.1.2012 18:02 Scatha wrote: Psi: the 'Masterpiece' ability lets you spend points you've already invested in Smithing to make one great work. This is meant to be reminiscent of e.g. Feanor, who, although he had crafted the Silmarils, would never be able to make their like again -- you don't always just keep getting better at things. In this case, I spent these points in making the Gloves of Tulkas.
