My best character in any non-coffeebreak roguelike so far. That dwarven metal brigandine armour and especially Gondricam have made the game a lot easier; I didn't have to worry about resistances until DL 9 (nexus!).

Still, the Dúnedain EXP penalty seems to assert itself now: Exploring DL 9 has become reasonably safe yet mostly unrewarding, while even a "boring" DL 10 almost proved insta-deadly due to lack of poison resistance. Poison and nether resistance seem to be very rare, so for now I'm going to stay on DL 9 and hope to find appropriate gear there or in the stores.

Is this actually the way to update a character dump? I'll see in a minute...

Still no luck about RPois or RNeth...

I'm considering two things: Swap the potions of RCold for a ring of ice? I already have permanent RCold, so I *should* have time enough to put on the ring even if an ancient white dragon takes me by surprise, right?

Secondly, should I swap a lantern of brightness for a lantern of stealth? RDark seems to be comparatively unimported - for now. A slightly extended light radius should help detecting enemies in time, but a boost in stealth can be lifesaving as well. Then again, my character's stealth is already at excellent...

Ah, decissions, decissions...

Keep the lantern of brightness for endgame, Saruman has a powerful darkness attack.

Can you not find a more powerful weapon than Gondricam?

Thanks, that indeed is an argument for sticking to the lantern of brightness.

Once so far I've found a glaive of Westernesse, which may have been better in some respects. I sold it anyway because I've become paranoid about insta-death by resistance gap, even though you've done a very good job in minimizing YAAD experiences...

Lost one of the rods of Slow Monster on a young chromatic dragon, but the dragon scale shield should make up for it. Again a mature green dragon left me half-dead after breathing poison once, so I reset the hitpoint warning to 50%. You don't seem to find RPois half as often as resistance against some element :-/

I've played two sessions or so and just returned from a small "lucky" DL 9. I've leveled up, but the level feeling still does not tell me that I should "go deeper". Considering my DL 10 experiences so far and that I still haven't found RPois or at least RNether I should probably take head of it. But the required experience is so high that I'm going to stay on DLs 9 only if their feeling is at least "very lucky". Anything else is just boring for a character like this.

Not much to say about my recent expedition... Sleep Monster seems to be useless, at least as of DL 9. Oh, and once again a mature green dragon's breath cost me about half of my character's HP in one hit. At least I teleported into a room where Sméagol was lurking and so got my belated revenge on him.

That's good to know@ sleep effects :-)

I almost forgot about the disenchanter bat: A "somewhat quickly" moving enemy with a supposed disenchanting attack? Gross! I was lucky enough to see it just before it could reach me, so I decided to take no risk and use a scroll of phase door. Then I blindly fired a rod of Slow Monster down the corridor, and four bolts of lightning afterwards, the last of which found its mark.

Anyway, I feel more comfortable with the improved light radius rather than even more improved stealth and so am going to swap lanterns again.

I should get a move on and come to an end with this. A week ago I already had a dream in ASCII about Quickband...

Strangely, the game seems to be more difficult with Húrin's axe rather than easier. Either it's because of the lack of the regeneration bonus or I'm wrong because I was on some particularly tough DLs 9.

Had a nasty encounter with a group of storm giants which cost me a couple of magic devices and nearly my character's life. Luckily I had just acquired double RElec when one of them teleported my character right into their middle! Looks like you can't handle them safely even if you wait for them around the corner...

Just what I was afraid of: An inscription on DL 10 told me that there are ancient green dragons on that depth. I'm going to stay on DLs 9, hoping to finally find permanent RPois or at least level up to get some more hit points.

After a break of several months I finally had the courage to resume the game. Found two artifacts and a dragon scale mail on a "good" DL9! Hithlomir seems to be designed for rogues and brigands, so I'm going to sell it. Not sure about Anguirel... Is it worth suffering "aggravation", on top of that without poison resistance...?

On 4.11.2011 20:47 Antoine wrote:
Although Anguirel is an effective weapon, aggravation is generally regarded as a very dangerous disadvantage.

You shouldn't be wandering round DL 9 without cold resistance...

I've sold Anguirel. Aggravate monsters would have been too risky with my resistance gaps, I think.

I'm paying an involuntary visit to DL 11 after just having "finished" DL 9. I'm getting along surprisingly well and even looted a few excellent items, only I underestimated an ancient bronze dragon (didn't think that resisted confusion can be worse than double-resisted elemental damage) and a group of dreads (from 250 HP to 35 HP in one turn! They seem to be more than twice as dangerous as Lurtz!).

Speaking about Lurtz: I teleported him away and need to seek him out now... See whether I can pull it off, unprepared as I am.

A Maia of Tulkas was approaching when I saved the game. You know what? I'll just step aside and hope that it leaves me be. Would be sad if a character like this had to fight even the Maiar.

On 27.11.2011 21:29 Antoine wrote:
You should be able to tackle Lurtz if you have enough speed, enough Healing potions and enough raw damage output.

I am afraid that Maia of Tulkas will try to pummel you - perhaps you should teleport him away too.

A.

Good idea! Glad that the maia survived our encounter.

Lurtz was not happy to see Silor. Imagine your character leads his allies into battle, charging at the enemy, weapon readied, exclaiming a battlecry - only to get teleported out of the way! Anyway, not even he could withstand all the slowing and confusion magic that I hurled at him, and with a potion and ring of speed, about six !CCW and a bit of kiting I finally defeated him. At full speed and summoning reinforcements, he was rather frightening, though.

I am going to return to DL 11 a few times and see whether I get chaos and nether resistance... I suspect Saruman has a nether attack.

This is by far one of the longest games in the history of Quickband, both in terms of turncount and real time ^^

Saruman's main attacks are dark, cold and fire. No nether.

Had my first victory ever against a Ring Wraith. Next time I should bring along more potions of Restore Live Levels...

Fighting Mîm, a death knight and an "incompetent summoner" (I liked that one) simultaneously was not a good idea. Glad I had this staff of Slowing.

The one really critical situation was the encounter with Scatha. Not only did I overlook a sleeping inertia drake in the same room, I was also unaware that Scatha can sometimes drop your hit points by round about 75% in a single turn, even if you play a level 35 dĂşnadan warrior with Speed +8!

So, RPois items only show up after you can run into ancient green dragons? I hope this was changed in the newer versions (I am still on 2.0.2).

472 damage with a single attack! (sigh) Okay, from now on I shall close the gaps in my resistances as soon as possible, even if it means removing a ring of speed +4 and being stuck with two rings of Resist [Whatever]. At least I can finally update to 2.0.5
