Cruising currently - likely overconfident, but the two blows and *burning* brand have made Star pretty dominant in combat recently. Just picked up the shield; suffering from marked lack of ID and *ID* all game - had to use one *ID* on the phial so that memory attacks would not stop me from being able to use it!

Wow that weapon is amazing! Grippli is the only weapon prefix that reduces weight by 30%, any other prefix would not have been enough to get you two blows

Now we're rocking.

The RNG listened! and gave me Godly Insights - which is a huge help - and a Remove Curse scroll, so that my -2 WIS amulet is replaced with a +3, tripling mana.

OK, RNG, for my next request I'd like a huge stack of *ID* scrolls so I can see what holes I have in my resistances and which armour I would be best wearing...

You won't get three blows with this weapon. You need 19 dex for three blows, but only with weapons light enough to support 3, for shaman that's 10.9 lbs or less.

Actually 14 dex, 19 is for 4 blows

Oberon down. Faeries are annoying, but partly my own fault for relying on spell for SeeInv. I eventually gave up and looked at armour spoilers, so I am back down to base speed but better resistances; I really could do with a speed ring sometime soon..

Otherwise not much happening - still sticking with the two-blow weapon. Mobs getting a little tougher.

Nope, no lanterns of sight yet nor indeed any ego lantern.

[Incidentally, I don't think that quality-squelch is working, at least in the OS X build]

Yep doesn't seem to work for me either. I posted about the activating thing before trying to quality squelch

Confused. Spell fail rates have gone through the roof, to the point where it's a real survival problem. I don't show any taint, I'm using an appropriate weapon, WIS is still OK... ideas anyone?

Incidentally, Third True Horror was a real pain. A gazillion hp and blinking away all the time - which was good in that it gave me breaks, but still annoying.

Fighting in *Destroyed* areas to minimise summons helps a lot.

Augmented Chain Mail of Caspanion - 27lbs or something . That's where your failrate come from. Casters can carry only so much armor before it affects their casting. (The weight of your armor encumbers your movement) In vanilla you (just) lose mana, while here you get worse spell casting rates. The max you can wield without penalty is around 25lb. Might or might not depend on level. That's all armor slots combined, weapons don't count.

Depending on what spells you want to use regularly, you can carry a good amount more than that without too much of a penalty. Last time I checked I could carry around 35 before the most difficult spell I depend on working (tele_other) started to to grow into the double digits.

Thanks again, Matthias! Yep - took it off, fail back down to 5%. Argh - that's definitely my best armour, but I guess I will go back to Thalkettoth or something. I'm going to run out of CCW rapidly - may have to go back to Helhenneth for rConf, perhaps. Oy veh.

With gaining clvl 43, I think I'm going to have to shift into mana-kill and frequent rest mode. Have not found a good light weapon, so melee damage against anything resisting fire is bad and that is most enemies currently; but Holy Word looks as though it should be effective.

Kit now has rBlind and rConf, essential for play as a caster..

Had to bail on Saruman. He healed faster than I hurt him, and I ran out of healing potions to remove blindness, stunning, etc.

I don't really see how I ever kill him, actually - the heal rate seems too high to catch unless I get a *lot* more speed.

On 16.6.2011 22:25 Matthias wrote:
Anything cool in holy infusions? How much damage does holy word do? The spell is in Excorcism right? Are you using any other spells from that book?

Have to agree on Saruman, but I guess it depends on what wrath of god has to offer. It's also kind of nice that there are difficult optional uniques in case more than one person kills big M

On 16.6.2011 22:30 ewan wrote:
Infusions finally gives trap removal (!) but is mostly a book to leave at home: enchant up armour and weapons; the highest spell is holy-brand for arrows which will be nice if I get there.

I use Dispel Evil from Exorcism also; Holy Word does more damage (176 vs 132) and also fully heals which is great, but fail rate right now is 47% vs 5% so not practical.

Since this dump I did get my first speed ring - thankyou, O RNG, what do you have in store for me?! - but nothing else of interest.

On 17.6.2011 00:35 Matthias wrote:
Hmm.. the damage is d132, not 132, so less damage to evil than OOD on average for three times the cost. It seems like it would only make sense if you were in sight of a large amount of monsters, but then you only want that if those monsters are trivial.
What type of situation do you use it in?

Good job on the speed ring :)

A couple of cases: long corridors (usually weakish major demons, Vrocks or Herzou) and of course clearing pits. Also, when being approached from a couple of different directions by melee enemies, allowing for softening up of each.

I forgot Recharging in Infusions, which has worked generally once per item and then explodes it. [The fact that staves do not stack if having different charges is another gameplay choice that makes things trickier.]

I've taken down a few enemies with archery recently; arrows break almost all the time it seems, but damage from the big bow and a decent seeker arrow can be impressive. I discovered that drolems are apparently not dragons any more..

Another iteration. HA weapon for SI and FA; giving up on rBlind again to swap Hammerhand back in having lost DEX from Dal-I-thalion for the speed boots.

Melee really only for very weak enemies now. Under normal conditions would be diving; for the comp I need to clear every level at least enough to check for uniques, though. Ran from Saruman again.

Wow. Well, Saruman kept coming back and being annoying, so eventually I sold out to try for him: prepped in *Destroyed* area again, improved speed plus haste, liberal use of healing potions and 3 mana potions. Also powders of ice blast, oddly, appeared to be most effective at dazing him.

Eventually it worked... and he dropped *both* Dor-Lomin and Thorin. Yes, fail rate is up to 7% across the board now** but it's worth it, surely.
