This game is a couple of deaths and quickstarts starting from a base of the comp savefile.

Am I ready for Saruman? I haven't killed any notable uniques besides Lurtz. 6% fail on most spells, 30% fail on teleport other.

Overprepared, I think. How have you found the game?

A.

It feels like it was just dragged out. It's not much different to me if you kill 20 snagas quickly in V or 8 slowly in this, using the same number of rounds in either case. The point of a paladin is the heal spell, but I think I only used that once, because the game was practically over before I learned it, and for the time I had it the failure was too high. PB5 and PB6 came so late they hardly mattered.

It felt like I was scumming the vast majority of the game. I was an underpowered fighter killing orcs and trolls until the 230K game turn mark when I got an amulet of trickery, and then 20K turns later I was overpowered and flush with artifacts.

Perhaps if I understood things better or had a decent monster memory I could have approached things differently. Lack of rConf combined with more monsters hitting to confuse may have caused me to be too timid.

In next release, your late game character would have rather less hp and perhaps a bit less speed.

Why was =Trickery such a game-changer? The speed?

And how do you kill snagas more quickly in V?

Actually, let me guess - by starting with 4 blows with a light weapon?

A.

On 25.4.2011 20:36 PowerDiver wrote:
Or even 3 blows. You shouldn't take my complaints too seriously. NPP is fairly well diagonalized against the things I think are interesting or my playstyle or some combination. If you think NPP is great, we've got sufficiently different viewpoints so that you shouldn't even consider making changes based on my complaints.

Trickery was an extra blow and 2 points of speed and another point of speed from the extra dex. Maybe +50% damage altogether? Hmm - if 4 blows from 3 and +5 speed from +2 that comes to (4/3) * (15/12) = 5/3 is worth at least +70%. Then once I made that bump in power, successive power bumps came quickly and easily.

My complaint isn't that trickery is overpowered. My point is that I was too weak before I found it. I was too weak for a long time, and then in little time I was ready for S. The amulet was just the catalyst. Any one of a fair number of artifacts could have started the power run. Whether that's just the luck I had, or a consequence of my playstyle, or a consequence of the game's design, I don't know. Who knows, maybe that sort of game is appealing to people other than me.

I do think you need to adjust failure rates and/or reduce level required. The tables are based on the idea of stat gain, so you could drop failure rates by up to 30% to make up for the fact people don't get their internal stat to 18/100. A paladin that is expected to finish the game before getting minimum fail on heal just seems wrong to me.
