You can still put points into it, but it will cost more than if it was listed in white. If it turns yellow or red, this means it is costing even more.

To make the early game easier, try to focus your points on only a few skills, preferably the ones that do the most immediate damage to monsters - eg weapons or martial arts. Get these up to about 20% before you start learning other skills like spellcasting or dodging.

Magical Devices is also fine to invest in early once you have found/purchased some devices (only Spark is worth an actual purchase early on, and even this only very much in moderation).

Note that there's a second way that skills can cost a premium, and this time you're not warned! It's if you start raising them from zero when you are at high power. The penalty is (as of 1.0.1, which we're playing) for "skills more than 10 below your Power rating," but in practical terms it's not worth worrying about for anything before power ~15 (it starts to hit the most expensive skills like Forging about then) and for most things before power ~20.

So, it might be OCD of me, but I like to keep skills at a minimum of 11 below Power (the penalty seems to care about the "raised to" level, not "raised from") from about 15 onwards... it's not as annoying as it seems once you've got some good body English with the arrow keys. :-)
