Thought I would give FA a try with the no wilderness option. Things are fun so far. While I haven't found many artifacts, I am using all of them (Balli, Camelbag, The Shield of the Elements & the Lamp). I should probably get a little deeper, but I feel like I lack a really effective way of dealing heavy damage. I have yet to see any branded ammo and just found the first ego launcher, the xbow of accuracy.

Also, there is something buggy in the stores. I have to make sure I save before shopping, as the game locks up and shuts down occasionally when in a store and trying to look at my inventory or equipment.

On 21.6.2010 02:00 Nick wrote:
Magic devices should be a better bet for damage dealing than archery; you probably won't get really serious damage output until the later dungeon books, though.

I'll look into the stored bug - are you playing in Windows?

On 21.6.2010 02:36 Shinedog wrote:
Which magic devices should I look for? I usually don't use devices to inflict damage. Right now I use phase door to move away, clear mind to recharge, and lightening bolt and frost beam to inflict damage. But nothing seems to do huge damage. How much more damage am I getting from Heighten Magic?

I am playing in Windows 7.

Those wands of shrapnel are a good start; also you can get a stack of attack rods and use them like a machine gun :)

Highten Magic is spell dependent - it raises your effective character level by about 3.

Mage can do more damage then any other class using magic throw. It allways hit, take less then one turn with fast casting ability and it is possible to take weapon back with telekinesis.

On 22.6.2010 02:41 Shinedog wrote:
I did not realize that my magic was so weak. I cast magical disarm at a trap door in a greater vault. Little did I know that my magic was so weak that I would be cast down out of the vault through the trap door. I thought I was playing the disarm safe like in Vanilla or NPP. Oh well, I was all set up for that vault too, lots of Teleport Away and easy stone to mud.

Downward and onward. Now that my INT is up to respectible range and I can haste and cast Force Away with ease, I am simply using that to deal damage and push everything back. Sort of like a poor man's rift, but without the slowing effect. I used the spell to easily dispatch Vargo and a player ghost (but the chest held junk).

The spears of dread that I have in my throwing belt. The armory offered 30,000 gp for each. Are they really worth that much, or is that just the premium paid for +3 speed?

On 22.6.2010 03:12 Nick wrote:
That's the +3 speed.

For regular FA players, is breath damage attenuated like in NPP (i.e., the further you are from a breather, the less damage you take)?

Also, who is the next guardian that I will encounter (assuming I don't do something stupid) and at what level.

Finally, what are the pros and cons of the remaining specialties for the mage? Is fast casting the way to go next?

On 22.6.2010 10:23 Nick wrote:
Yes.

Glaurung at dl55.

The specialties are all good (I have to say that).

I tend to take clarity and heighten magic with a mage (if I'm going for turncount I'll forgo the third speciality). Channeling can be useful if you're trying to max out your spell power. I've never really used Fast Casting as back in the day when I looked at the source code for mage specialities (FA 0.2.1 ?) I didn't tend to rely on the low level spells that Fast Casting would actually apply too.

Does Magic Throw really always hit now? It used to be throwing based off Int instead of Str before, so wasn't that much use then.

On 22.6.2010 11:01 LostTemplar wrote:
Range is based on int instead of str, crit chance is based on double throwing skill but hit chance is 100%.

Hadn't realised that you'd finally caved in ;)

Damn death drake. I knew it was there. I had teleported it away before. I was just having so much fun on the all dragon level with the unguarded treasure vault in the middle that I stopped bothering to cast detect invisible, or I would have seen it approaching.

I also noticed some unusual behavior on the dragon level. If the dragons were more than 7 or 8 spaces away from me, I couldn't see them, even in a lit room. I could detect monsters and then target them, but I could only see the ones closest to me. That did not happen with other monsters (trolls, orcs, etc.). Not sure if this is a bug or an intentional feature of some kind.

All in all, I very much enjoyed this expreience with FA and will try it again.

On themed levels vision maximum range is 10 instead of 20, it is intended, but strange.

The vision maximum range is more annoying than anything else, at least for a class with reliable detection. For a class without reliable detection, it would be a real handicap. Maybe I will try a Necro this time. New spell set. Even more fragile.
