Back to the dependable Monk which is the character type I beat Hengband with (though Redwing there was a Craft Monk). Went with Draconian for obvious resistance advantage. Going well and currently he is Chlvl 33 and has been camping out on 43' of the Dragon's Lair levelling up on D's and generally having a good time. He got a good stroke of luck in the Logrus Master Quest when he dropped a Rod of Restoration which is a very nice item to pickup indeed. He does enough damage for the Cloning Pits (5 blows for 312 damage) but he doesn't have res Conf/Chaos covered so he's waiting for that to happen.

Figured by posting him he might actually stay alive long enough to win.

Whitewing plowed through the Cloning Pits at Chlvl 36 with no res Confusion or Chaos but he had a potion of Curing + a Staff of Curing and he only got confuse/hallucinated once. I would've preferred to have had it but he just hasn't come across any items conferring these resistances. Easiest run he's had through the Pits in a long while as everything was getting creamed for 450/460 damage from his 6 blows of stunning monk damage. Only item to make it into his kit was Shiva's boots although Thror had done an admirable job up to that point.

Chlvl 37 he achieved whilst clearing out the Old Castle and this was pretty plain sailing as well thanks to his rod of restoration and scrolls of recharging however right at the end of the quest he tried to recharge the rod one more time (after the quest was completed) and it was consumed - aargh. No matter he now has the famous Leather Jacket to go with the boots and he's ready for action with 7 blows and 565 damage. His life rate is a phenomenal 119 and his stats are pretty good too so he won't be playing with potions of New Life :-). He picked up Jack's Shadow Cloak from a lowly Headless in the Dragon's Lair at dungeon level 44' which was amusing as he defeated Jack a little later on Angband 38 taking care of Chaugnr Faugn who was the Quest Monster there. He must've been so upset to see Whitewing wearing it. Time to take down the Quest Monster on Angband 50 I think and then it's probably time to dive down to level 60 in the Dragon's Lair and hopefully pick ups some handwear to use, a decent amulet (Sacred Knights would be perfect), a nice light source that addes something as well a shooter that enhances as well.

Quantum leap in power on first visit to this depth as a Hell Wyrm and a Demilich provided "Fingolfin" and "Boromir" in quick succesion which means Whitewing went from 7 blows doing 585 damage to 767 which is nice. This seems to be aroundt the depth that decent stuff starts turning up and he's still carrying a spare ring for Nether and Chaos res so he's not going any deeper for the moment. Glaurung and Ancalagon met their fate in the Lair recently but neither dropped anything of note (OK - Ancy dropped Black Arrow of Bard but that's hardly exciting is it?).

Motoring along it seems.

Huge vault on this level took ages as there were alot of uniques. He gained 5 levels (39 to 44) and picked up a ton of Artifacts (4 of which ended up in his kit - Jewel of Judgement, Crimson, Celegorm & Sacred Knights) as well as a randart Iron Crown 'Life Matrix' which covers Res Sound/Disenchant holes. Number of Uniques were high and he managed to knock off a couple of tough ones like Tiamat due to them being low on hps when he encountered them as they fought each other within the confines of the Vault. He also picked up 5 wanted corpses of the 14 outstanding ones so he's got less than half to go. He's doing less damage now in this config but he covers all resists except for Blindness and Fear like this and 8 blows for 705 is still enough. He also picked up a Ring of Speed and Blizzard +8 which along with the Jewel and Crimson and his innate Monk speed bonus means his base speed is +25 which is good enough to win with.

There was so much loot he had to destroy the 3 staffs of speed and other items of value to be able to bring back most of the artifacts and the wanted corpses.

He's still powering along and he should have less close calls now that he's got resistances pretty much covered.

I've reviewed his kit and saw that Amulet of Sacred Knights was redundant apart from it's speed boost. Faramir goes in with it's nice +16 damage and it covers res Fear (hey you never know if you run out of potions of Herois it can be important - particularly for a melee based character like a Life Monk!). He loses 2 speed (+25 to +23) but his damage goes from 705 to 817 from his 8 blows which I think is a good tradeoff).

Giddy up. Time to take on the Angband 56 and 62 Quest Monsters...

He's rocking along. 1180 hps (life rate 119) and 9 blows for 988 damage and he's taken down critters like Morgoth on Angband 88 and Mephistoles. The latter dropped 'Diatribe' so he's going to go home and sort through his gear to see if he can accomodate it without leaving any resistance holes. Even though he acquired Amber a while ago he was never able to wear it as his current randart headgear 'Life Matrix' plugs the Disenchant and Sound res holes. We'll see what happens but in any case he's shaping up well. It will soon be time to take out the Unique Guardians in most of the Dungeons. I have a good feeling about Whitewing. (He got a nice upgrade to his ring of speed when Y'Golonac dropped a +17 one on Angband 83) - This means unhasted his speed is +36 which is more than enough.

Decided with Staff of Magi + Ultimate Resist + True Warding + Double Attack that Whitewing should be able to take the Serpent and so it was. He had to teleport away 3 times and destruct some critters 2 or 3 times but he won relatively easily. Life Monks are nice. Now that I've won Entroband I'm anxious to win with other Character types. Did not contemplate playing him longer as he would need to scum alot of resources to even think of taking on the Unicorn and the Mad Chemist would be a no go for this type of character (I don't think Monks are suited to taking him on - maybe a Samurai wielding Grond would be the go).

In any case I've got the Entroband monkey off my back - yipee! Note I did use Diatribe for the Serpent (and in fact normally used it and swapped in the randard Iron Crown "Life Matrix" when Whitewing needed res Disenchant/Sound. 9 blows for 1195 pts of Monk Damage was plenty even for the Destroyer who only requried one *Healing* potion. The Serpent took 2 or 3 *Healing* + 1 zap from his healing Rod + 3 charges from his healing staff + 8 potions of Healing as well as 2 standard heal spells and @4 Life potions. He didn't have too much more than this but it was enough (I got impatient).

Perfect Quest record which might be a first for me too.

Not sure what character type to try next - I think it will be an Artifactless Weaponsmith (to see if I can do it) - He will be allowed to use artifact lights and jewellry but not weapons or armour of said nature.

Another thing to note is I only had 1 critter left to collect for the Scroll of Artifact creation and it was only Bloodfang but I never bothered to try too hard to find him - oh well.
