After losing yet another DE rogue, decided to give up on the sneaking around and play a character that could whack stuff. After a quick foray north(for a bunch of experience and Elvenkind armour) left a trail of blood all the way to Amon Rudh and dived pretty much straight to 30. Recalled, looked at my gear (no !Heal, no !Speed, no enchanted arrows) and thought "Yeah, I can do this". Bought the alchemist out of ?Phase and the temple out of !RAcid, and headed down. Found Mim after clearing the level completely, including a troll pit (for a !Heal, luckily), then it started. After 50-60 arrows, my !Heal and about 30 ?Phase he had acid-balled and healed all his mana away, and I started hitting him with shrapnel (and occasional melee). Used my last phase when he was on two stars, then *smote* him until he fled, and shrapnelled him in the back for the win. Close thing. Now it's off to Nargothrond to be killed by Glaurung, if the hounds don't get me first.

I think the most approachable special level for risk/reward is the elemental one, especially for characters in the stat-gain hunt. Of course, my personal favorite is the dragon themed level, but I usually stumble upon it before I'm ready for it.
