After that, if I survive that long, I'll take stock and figure out a strategy for the mid game...

That'd be a Sneakthief then - By CL11 I'll have reached my 18s/15s/12s and can contemplate my options. Prob want a bit more PER and play it as an archer.

Ran a heard of half elves (or wood elves, whatever you called them), but kept having issues where by the time I got to DL6 one or two stats would be bottomed out too hard and eventually it would catch up to me.

Switched to high elves and that's not a problem anymore ;)
