Wow. That screaming skull of vengence was pretty darn nasty.

I was knocking off flaming tombs without too much trouble on level 10 when one summoned the skull. Trailblazer was pretty close to full hp, but I suspected the skull might be trouble so I attacked it first. Trailblazer missed, and never got another move.

Decided to continue my Entroband ways and go with the Devilspawn (basically the same as an Entroband Beastman) and rogues are always good classes to start with.

Lots of observations based on a little low-level play:

- I like the feel. Its similar to Steamband in that it has a completely different feel than most 'bands, and that's really nice. It might be a lot of work, but for future versions, I'd suggest renaming the various starting race and class options with something more in-theme. Maybe keep the Devilspawn and the like, and replace elf, hobbit, dwarf, etc. with various nationality or regional origins.

- Starting around level 8 or so, monsters start dropping a lot of money. If Hellband is only 50 levels deep, I understand, because characters have to buy their house (which is both not cheap, and a good idea) and don't have much time to do it. However, Trailblazer was picking up 3-4k au per trip just in gold, which seemed a bit generous to me.

- Melee combat looks fishy. Even using his starting dagger with which he should have gotten 3 blows/round, the screen never said Trailblazer was getting more than 1 attack per round. Maybe it was a display issue rather than a mechanics issue, but I'm not sure. At one point his DEX was drained, so he could get 3 blows/round with that dagger of slay demon, or 1/blow round with the planar trident he died wielding. The damage output wasn't even close, with the trident outstripping the dagger nearly 2 to 1, suggesting he was stuck at 1 blow/round (which would explain why those darn early uniques were so hard to kill).

Anyway, those are the big things. Its a great game so far, and fun to play.

The screaming skulls killed my best character also. After I died I thought that maybe you're supposed to ignore the skulls and keep killing the tomb, and that then the skulls would go away. But I don't really know.

About the attacks - I think it's a feature and not a bug. I believe it works the same way as multiple shots do in other *bands. That is, you make a single blow at a time, but you will get to make more blows before the monster reacts. So if you have 4 blows and you're surrounded by mice, you can dispatch 4 of them per turn instead of one.

I totally agree that the feel of this variant is great. Good luck on further characters =)

Re: attacks/round - I'll do a little testing and check it out, as that might well be.

Another interesting feature is that monster attack and movement speeds appear to be split. A monster can be slow afoot, only have 1 or 2 attacks, and still be ferocious in combat due to a really high attack speed.

Yep, that was it for the attacks/round. I tried another character who had just 1 blow/round. The monsters hit him many more times and a lot harder between his attacks than they did with Trailblazer.

I like that the character creation system includes a quick-create option which, rather than just reproducing the character you just made instead gives you a random one. Using the old quick-create, people could (I'm not mentioning any names, but I'm looking at me), with a little patience, basically select the starting mutation/corruption that best complemented their class (Demon Patron and Harden Vs. Elements being, IMO, the two very best ones). Having to actually recreate your character each time makes that strategy still possible, but sufficiently time consuming that only the truly insane would be willing to do it.

Again thanks for your comments, which are very enlightening, next version which should come next week will have new races etc.

It will have a birth sign that has auto-id ( at price of course ;)
