Looks like unless I find a good missile weapon, I'll be stuck in Eriador.

Unless a miracle happens, though, I don't know how I should get past level 28. Archery damage is simply to low at this point, I have to run from any unique and anything remotedly out of depth ... . Guess at some point the RNG will catch me ;-)

With a 'mediocre' race, rangers seem quite difficult to me - you have a hard time to kill anything: mediocre melee and overall archery damage, even with 'marksmanship'. Shouldn't be a ranger a hunter who uses magic to spy on his prey and then attack at the appropiate moment, taking out or at least weakening his foes with archery and then finishing them off in melee? If I didn't have Narthanc and some wands/rods for ranged attacking, I wouldn't have gotten that far at all. At least the detection spells came very handy, while some of others are quite redundant/superfluous. Spell points are always (too) low. And I still wonder why rangers are supposed to be 'native' to forests - trees and arrows do not work together at all. And the forests in FAangband are quite dense .. plains suit the ranger much better... .
But I was looking for a challenge - and I found one ;-)
