Had a huge run of luck with speed items (bought 5 7-charge staves in the black market, and then bought a total of a dozen speed potions in various places as well), so he went after the Cloning Pits at level 30 after buying some decent gloves got his AC up to 110 or so. Had rChaos on a weapon swap, plus he had a few potions of curing along.

Nothing nasty was hiding, and in fact he was kind of lucky in that nothing ever invoked or breathed chaos on him (many, many ants and hydras were summoned, though), but Versatile just barely cleared it. Brought in 12 speed potions, 2 7-charge staves of speed, 7 healing potions, 40 each of CCW and heroism potions, and he used 'em all.

The Dagons alone took 3 healing potions and 2 speed potions to get through (he picked up harden to the elements, which was nice). Its not that the monsters did anything especially nasty or that I did anything dumb, its just that Versatile really feels... sub-standard for some reason. even at level 32 heroismed and blessed (but not hasted) he wasn't a match for the Grendels 1 on 1 in melee.

His Laser Eye mutation did much of the heavy lifting against the melee monsters, and since it automatically beams, it was great for taking out badly injured Gachapins, hiding behind masses of summoned hydras.

Versatile did complete the quest, though, and found a huge haul of loot. Some nice randart armor, Balli Stonehand, GaeBolg, Hammerhand, Thranduil (with rPoison), and a bunch of other things. Sorting through them will take a while, but even so, Versatile still feels underpowered for some reason, though I can't quite put my finger on it.

One really obvious problem, however, is that Versatile's stats, though generally really good (didn't get his first Augmentation until level 26 or so, but then got augmented twice more by level 33), got swapped when he leveled late in the quest. He only had 1 really bad stat (it had been WIS) at 15, and the rest were base 18/10 or higher. Sadly, that stat is now CON, and I think his life rating got hit as well, because he's level 33 with ~230 HP. My damn Sorcerer had more HP and (counting Stoneskin) a better AC at that level. Sigh.
